Silwan natives rally against Jewish archeological conference
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Hundreds of Palestinian citizens from Silwan district participated in a rally near the settlement outpost at the entrance to Wadi Hilweh neighborhood to protest the holding of a Jewish archeological conference in their area.
The protestors carried banners written in Arabic, Hebrew and English denouncing the Jews' attempt to falsify the truth and their David city allegations.
Director of Wadi Hilweh information center Jawad Siyam said this conference, which was held by Elad settlement for the 13th consecutive year, was aimed at falsifying the facts.
Siyam added that Elad makes false claims in its conference about its David city archeological discoveries in Silwn district and invites international archeologists to witness its lies.
He condemned this conference as a crime against Silwan natives and warned that everyone participating in this conference is an accomplice in this crime.
The director of the center accused Elad society of working on erasing the Arab and Islamic history of Silwan, seizing Palestinian lands and property, forging title deeds and demolishing homes in order to serve its settlement and Judaization activities.

Settlers attack several vehicles belonging to Palestinians in Silwan
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- A group of Israeli settlers punctured, on Sunday morning, tires of a number of Palestinians' cars parked in front of their owners' houses in Wadi Hilweh in Silwan, in occupied city of Jerusalem.
Tawfiq Hassan Abu Hadwan, one of the residents of Wadi Hilweh, said that a group of five settlers arrived, on a white Citroën, to the region where three of them started puncturing tires of the parked cars belonging to Palestinian citizens under the protection of the other two who were carrying arms.
Abu Hadwan added that one of the Israeli police patrol (border guards) had been watching from afar the aggressors, but did not intervene to prevent this attack.
He pointed out that the neighborhood's residents did not try to confront the settlers who were heavily armed, because they thought that they are elements of Special Forces.
Yet, when some youths tried to confront the Jewish settlers, they fled from the neighborhood, followed by the border guards’ patrol, stated Abu Hadwan.

Experimental chemical plant polluting Palestinian village in the Negev
Silwanic has learnt that a private Israeli company is using lands belonging to the Palestinian village of Wadi al-Ne’am, north of Beer Sheba, for dangerous chemical experiments.
An outdoor chemical plant approximately two kilometers from the village was visited by Silwanic journalists, who found a sign hanging on the barbed wire perimeter that reads “Danger of drowning, do not approach” in Arabic, and “Danger of drowning and poisoning, do not approach” in Hebrew.
The whole region is polluted by chemical fumes that affect breathing, and cause skin irritation. The chemical plant and its industrial pools lie on hundreds of acres taken from villagers some 25 years ago, says tribal elder Sheikh Yussef al-Zaiadin. The plant was built without consultation with any local residents.
Information and signposting in Arabic remains unclear around the site. The extent of the environmental impact of the plant is enormous, and as yet not fully documented.
Both human residents and cattle are affected by the open chemical pools, with the chemicals produced sprayed over the village and surrounding plains by crop-duster aeroplanes, as a means of testing their efficacy. This has led to widespread cattle death and the death of surrounding vegetation. Many residents suffer from health problems such as shortness of breath, skin diseases and birth defects.
The chemical plant is only one of many Israeli factories and industrial sites that have confiscated thousands of acres of village land. A major power plant lies 100 meters from the village, while none of its residents receive electricity from the state, as is the situation faced by all “unrecognized” villages in the Negev desert.
Residents are forced to use generators and to buy water. Wadi al-Ne’am is home to 24,000 people, some of whose homes have demolition orders from the Israeli state, others whose homes have already been demolished.
The town’s residents own the land it is built on, and do not engage in a Bedouin “lifestyle” as the state claims. Community groups in Wadi al-Ne’am, along with the Wadi Hilweh Information Center, have issued a public statement calling for the Israeli government to intervene and remove the factories and chemical plant from their land, and to put a stop to their attempt to ethnically cleanse the Negev of its Palestinian inhabitants.

8-year old child arrested from Bir Ayyub
An 8-year old child was arrested by Israeli police on Thursday, 13 September, on accusation of throwing stones. Mo’taz Shweki was held for several hours at Salah al-Din police station after he was taken from Bir Ayyub district of Silwan and transferred to Wadi Rababa before he was finally released.
Shweki’s father told Silwanic that: “My son was playing with his friends in Bir Ayyub park when an argument took place between the children there. Mo’taz threw a stone at one of his friends just as an army jeep was passing by. Of course the soldiers then came out, and the kids all tried to run home before the soldiers could reach them. The soldiers followed the kids and tried to break into one of the houses they’d run into – including my son. When the officers gained entry, they accused Mo’taz of throwing stones at them and arrested him.
They allowed one of Mo’taz’s relatives to accompany him in the army jeep to investigation at Salah al-Din police station. There, several investigators refused to interview him because of his age, though our relative present protested that Mo’taz should not be arrested without being interviewed. Eventually one of the investigators agreed to interview him, then released him with no conditions.”

Israeli forces close Silwan entrances for Jewish holidays
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM,(PIC)-- The Israeli forces closed the northern entrances to East Jerusalem's Silwan neighborhood on Monday to allow settlers celebrating the Jewish new year to access the area.
Wadi Hilweh Information Center denounced the Israeli measure that forced the Palestinian residents to take long detours to reach their homes.
Israeli forces were deployed in Silwan neighborhoods and closed its northern entrances preventing the children from reaching their schools and the residents from accessing their works.
"These routes were closed to Silwan residents to allow military vehicles and settler buses carrying settlers from the nearby outposts to freely tour the neighborhood," the Center said.
In a related context, Elad Association started preparation for the construction of a pedestrian bridge linking the visitor center "City of David" to the tunnel of Buraq square, passing through Wadi Hilweh square "Givati station", where workers brought the needed stones and materials for construction.
On the other hand, occupation forces raided and occupied Wadi Hilweh playground to turn it "to a military check point" during the celebration of "the Jewish New Year."
Mada center confirmed that the occupation forces stormed suddenly Wadi Hilweh playground, sparking fear among the children who were playing inside.
Locals said that at Jewish New Year settlers come to the area to perform rituals at a local spring, adding that the IOF will use the playground as an Israeli military post during the Jewish New Year.
The Wadi Hilweh playground, built on a Palestinian family's land 6 months ago, is threatened to be confiscated by the Israeli authorities to turn it to a car park.
Wadi Hilweh Information Center warned against exploiting the Jewish holidays to change the town of Silwan's features preparing to build a pedestrian bridge.

Settler group to 'build bridge' linking Silwan to Old City
Bulldozers pictured opposite the Al-Aqsa mosque in 2007
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- A private Israeli organization which promotes settlement building in East Jerusalem is planning to build a bridge between a visitors center in Silwan and the Old City, a local group said Tuesday.
Settler group Elad is planning the construction to link the City Of David Visitors Center in Silwan to al-Buraq square, where the Haram al-Sharif or Temple Mount compound lies, the Islamic-Christian Committee for Protecting Jerusalem and the Holy Sites said.
"Al-Buraq square is not the only Israeli project that is targeting holy places in Jerusalem. There are dozens of Israeli projects aimed to Judaize Jerusalem, and these projects are implemented in secrecy," secretary-general Hanna Issa said.
Silwan -- adjacent to the Old City's Dome of the Rock compound and Western Wall -- is populated by a number of settler homes under heavy Israeli guard, and the site of frequent clashes with forces on arrest raids targeting the Palestinian population.

IOA issues 3 demolition orders in Silwan
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM,(PIC)-- The Israeli Occupation Authorities (IOA) handed, on Wednesday, demolition orders against two houses and a Palestinian shop in the town of Silwan, south of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, under the pretext of being built without permit.
Wadi Hilweh Information Center confirmed that the IOA issued demolition orders against two Palestinian houses and a small store claiming they were built without permit despite the fact that the mentioned buildings were built since more than ten years.
In a related context; the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) closed the military checkpoint at the entrance to the suburb of Ras Khamis, near Shuafat refugee camp north of Jerusalem, to complete the construction of the latter part of the apartheid wall.

Occupation builds a bridge to change the landmarksin Silwan town
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Moriah Jerusalem Development Company will start, during the coming days, building a bridge for pedestrians and cars linking the visitor center of "City of David", established at Silwan's entrance south of al-Aqsa Mosque, and al-Buraq Square's tunnel, passing through Wadi al-Hilwa square.
Wadi al-Hilwa's information center reported in a statement released on Thursday evening that the occupation distributed a flyer to residents of Wadi al-Hilwa neighborhood in Silwan town entitled "changes in the traffic", indicating that construction works will be launched in the currently used Main Street, to turn it into a bridge connecting the outpost and al-Buraq Wall.
The statement added that the work will extend for several months, from 11:00 p.m until 5:00 a.m, noting that the Israeli police will close the street to traffic.
The building works of the bridge will be launched in cooperation between Moriah Company, the occupation municipality, Israeli police and the Antiquities Authority.
The Information Center in Wadi al-Hilweh stated that the occupation authorities has been continuing the implementation of settlement schemes in the city of Jerusalem in general, and the town of Silwan and al-Aqsa Mosque in particular, without taking into account the needs of the residents and without providing them with alternatives.
It pointed out that the Israeli Supreme Court had issued, about a year ago, a decree banning making changes in the main street of Wadi al-Hilwa, after the residents presented objection in the court, against the municipality's announcement of its intention to make changes in the street for the benefit of settlers.

In pictures: the eviction of Palestinian family in Ras al-Amoud
Israeli settlers were involved in the eviction of the Hamdallah family home in Ras al-Amoud, Silwan on Sunday, 2 September. Settlers claim ownership to the home, and were sighted taking and marking measurements of the building, despite the Hamdallah’s ownership of the house and several others in the area.
Armed officers of a private security company are currently standing guard in the partially-occupied home.
One bedroom and a bathroom were evicted following a 2000 High Court decision that ruled the house be given over to the settlers, after 15 years of legal battle. The court then ruled that the family could stay in the section of the house that was built before 1989, but they must move their belongings from three other warehouses and destroy an outside wall, allowing the settlers to move their caravans beside the home.
A settler group is planning to construct 20 residential settlement units on the land to extend the Ma’aleh Zetim settlement. Settlers are currently fortifying the portion of the home they have occupied, saying that they do not intend to use it for the time being.
