Boy dies of white phosphorous inhalation
Iyad Shehadah lived with his family in Jabalia, Northern Gaza. The situation in their area deteriorated with the beginning of the ground invasion of Gaza on 3 January 2009.
On Sunday, 11 January 2009, at around 4:30pm, Eyad left the house with a bag for his brother, who had left the house since the beginning of the war.
Around two hours later, he came back to the house. He was chocking. He said shells had landed near him when he was on his way back home and he had inhaled smoke.
His father asked the family to leave Eyad to rest, not suspecting his condition was serious. However, Eyad continued to choke and started vomiting.
At around 8:00pm, a neighbour drove Eyad to the hospital in Jabalia. Due to the gravity of his condition, he was transferred to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City for treatment.
While he was in the intensive care unit, the doctors informed his family that he had inhaled white phosphorous, and his respiratory system had melted.
He died on 12 January at 7:30pm.

Soldier Who Killed Gaza Woman, Her Daughter, Will Face Charges, Israel Says

Charges Filed Against Soldier Who Killed Two Women In Gaza
Majida
The Israeli Military Court filed charges against an Israeli soldier of the Givati Brigade after he was convicted of direct involvement in the killing of two Palestinian women during the Israeli Cast Lead offensive against the Gaza Strip.
The soldier is being charged of involuntarily manslaughter, while a criminal investigation in three similar cases was initiated.
Despite the fact that the soldier shot and killed Palestinian civilians who left their homes after being ordered to do so by the Israel army, he is not facing murder charges.
The two women, Rayya Abu Hajjaj, 64, and her daughter, Majida, 35, were killed by soldier “S” in a crowded civilian area in Gaza.
The woman and her daughter were among nearly 30 civilians who were forced out of their homes under direct orders of the military.
The army claimed that the soldiers opened fire at a wall in an attempt to force the Palestinians away from some military vehicles, and that “for an unknown reason”, the soldier “S” opened fire directly at the unarmed civilians.
The Military Prosecution said that killing in this case carried criminal intent, and that this is sufficient to file “involuntary manslaughter” while the defense attorney claimed that the case here is a “misunderstanding of military orders”.
Israel embarked its three-week war on Gaza on December 27, 2008.
1419 Palestinians were killed and thousands were wounded. Most of the casualties were civilians, including infants, children, women and elderly, in addition to medics, civil defense personnel and reporters. Dozens of Palestinians died of their wounds after Israel ended its attack.
The army bombarded homes, infrastructure, educational facilities, UNRWA facilities, mosques, and medical center.

IOF soldier sentenced to 45 days for killing Palestinian mother, her daughter
Rayya Abu Hajjaj, 64, and her daughter, Majida, 35
A Jaffa military court approved a plea bargain reached between the prosecution and Staff Sgt. S., a Givati Brigade soldier who was indicted in 2010 for shooting a 64-year-old Palestinian woman and her 35-year-old daughter to death.
The plea bargain included reducing the charges against the former soldier from manslaughter to illegal use of firearms. S. received a reduced sentence of 45 days in prison after pleading guilty.
The incident was recalled in the United Nations-initiated Goldstone Report into Israel’s crimes during the 2008-2009 aggression on Gaza Strip.
The court approved the defense team's claims that there was no evidence that the women died in this incident.
The Goldstone Report, issued in September 2009, accused Israel of deliberately targeting civilians in Gaza during its aggression. However, Goldstone retracted this accusation in April 2011.

Exclusive Focus on Israeli Violations Diminishes the Credibility of the Council’s Action
(Geneva, January 13, 2009) – The United Nations Human Rights Council’s vote to investigate violations in the Gaza crisis by Israel alone instead of by both sides weakens the credibility of the investigation, Human Rights Watch said today.
The council voted on January 12, 2009, to dispatch an urgent international fact-finding mission to investigate violations of international human rights and humanitarian law by Israel against the Palestinian people. The resolution was approved 33 to 1, with 13 abstentions.
“The crisis in Gaza is overwhelming and a priority for Council action,” said Julie de Rivero, Geneva advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. ”But the Council compromised what could have been a strong response by focusing only on Israel’s conduct and ignoring Hamas’s behavior.”
Human Rights Watch has repeatedly documented Israeli abuses in Gaza, including the devastating humanitarian impact of the 19-month blockade. It has called for investigation of the January 6 attack that killed some 40 displaced persons at a UN school, and of actions that unnecessarily place civilians in danger, including the use of white phosphorous in populated areas.
“Highlighting the abuses of both sides does not, and should not, imply equating the conduct of both sides,” De Rivero said. “A credible inquiry requires examining all aspects of the conflict and its impact on civilians, and being open to investigating all alleged abuses.”

Hadeel: Details of Last Hours:
During the war, Hadeel's mother preferred stay with her kids at her father home; she thought this is safer for her small family. But all of sudden the Israeli rockets became nearer from the house. For that the mother decided to pack for a quick leave. As sooner as she started to do pack, the Israeli rockets hit her room, killing the little daughter Hadeel.
The mother said:" I called Hadeel many times, but with no answer, so I carried her and ran while crying to get any help…to reach to the near ambulance car! It was too late for my little dying girl…No one could help us ".
"Hadeel stayed in clinical death for two days at Al- Shefaa' hospital in Gaza ". Mother added.
Her Dreams:
Hadeel was very intelligent, active, with a sense of humor. She dreamed to grow up to finish her studies at university.

Magdy: Details of the last hours:
Looking at Gaza during the first days of the Israeli onslaught, one would think it is a city inhabited by ghosts. Nobody dared to get out of their house since Israeli tanks were everywhere. The skies were clouded with aircraft and colored by the red flames of Israeli rockets that showered Gaza, day and night.
Only Magdy, with his innocence and childhood, found a reason to get out of his house. Magdy, accompanied by his cousin, Muhammad, went to gather some wood for his mother, so she could cook for them. After quickly collecting the wood, Magdy and Muhammad were tempted by the warmth of the sun's rays to play a little. But it was only a few minutes before an Israeli rocket, aimed at the two children, ended their game. Their bodies lay, ripped to shreds.
With his quietness, innocence, and light-hearted nature, Magdy captivated hearts at first sight. He never hurt anyone. Everyone who knew him noted his merits and good manners.
His father still cannot realize how ruthlessly his son was killed. “Is my son gone forever? But, I didn’t even have the chance to say goodbye to him!” Magdy’s brothers, yearn to see Magdy again. They still await his return home with his innocent smile. Ruba, Magdy’s younger sister, still imagines Magdy calling her to fetch him something from a nearby store. As she hears his voice echo in her ears, she glances back, only to discover that there was no one there. At that moment, nothing could extinguish her deep sorrow and pain for her brother’s death, but tears.
Magdy always accompanied his mother, regardless of where she went. Whenever anybody asked a favor of Magdy, he was always happy to help. Now, those who often went to Magdy, miss him greatly and long to see him again.
His Dreams:
It was Magdy’s greatest wish that the sun of freedom would shine again in the skies of the Gaza Strip. He wished to gain his post-graduate studies from a faculty which would enable him to best utilize and employ his skills and talents.
He hoped this would prepare him for a suitable job that would allow him to provide for his poor family.
Sadly, the IDF deprived this young boy from achieving his dreams- dreams that were lawfully his human right, according to international agreements and treaties.
Magdy’s story will always be one of innocent dreams – dreams that the children of Gaza have that will never come true now.

Mahmoud Muhammad Mahmoud Jaballah,13Abdu Ar-Rahmaan Ibraheem Gab Allaah, 13
Abdu: More Details:
Thirteen-year old Abdu Ar-Rahmaan, tried his best to escape the state of fear and horror imposed on Palestinians by the onslaught on Gaza City. Few hours before the afternoon of January 13, Abdu Ar-Rahmaan met his cousin, Mahmoud, on his way to grandfather’s home. The two cousins walked together along the As-Sikah neighborhood to buy food for lunch. All of sudden an Israeli reconnaissance plane fired its missiles into their tiny bodies. Abdu Ar-Rahmaan and Mahmoud were shot dead just few miles away from home.
The heartbroken mother was in floods of tears mourning her lost child and wondering what her child did to deserve such a ruthless death?!
Other Information:
Abdu Ar-Rahmaan was a handicapped child; he suffered from speech difficulties, and had less mental abilities than his peers.
Abdu Ar-Rahmaan had just finished only six months of the first grade in Shams Foundation for The Special Needs, and was preparing for the next term. The grieving mother says: "I was doing my best to help Abdu Ar-Rahmaan be a good student; I did not want him to feel inferior."
The brokenhearted mother adds: "At the hard times of war, when Israel launched its cruel onslaught on the city, we used to share canned food with his uncle’s family who resorted to our home. I and my sister-in-law used to save food for the kids. Although we did not have plenty of food, Abdu Ar-Rahmaan used to save a piece of his small food portion for me and would tell his brother, Khaleel, to do the same. My sister-in-law would laugh on him for doing so, but I was extremely proud of my little angel".
"Young as he was, Abdu Ar-Rahmaan was pretty aware of her special condition and knew that he may not be able to finish school, so he asked me to teach him a craft instead but I insisted on him finishing school first."
His Dreams:
Thirteen-year old Abdu Ar-Rahmaan dreamed of growing up and getting married. He wished to arrange a big wedding for his whole family. His mother says: "I used to tease him and say that I would find him a bride to marry at the age of eighteen, and he would just laugh."
She adds: "Abdu Ar-Rahmaan understood our difficult financial situation; he was not demanding at all, in fact, he would give up what he needs for his siblings,"
His aunt Sawsan had no children; thirteen-year old Abdu Ar-Rahmaan, young as he was, tried to compensate her. His aunt says: "Dear Abdu Ar-Rahmaan would come over to my place to help me in the kitchen". The mourning aunt tells his mother: "I have more right to mourn him than you; I loved him so much…"
A couple of hours before his death, Abdu Ar-Rahmaan’s mother asked her dutiful son to put the mattress in the sun on their house’s roof, he did what his mother asked and, as if he knew, said to her: "But Mom, this would be your last time to ask me to do so", and so it was…
Thirteen-year old Abdu Ar-Rahmaan went and all what he left were his sweet memories and unfulfilled dreams carved in the hearts and minds of his loving family.

`Isa Muhammad Jabr Abu `Idah, 17Mamduh Walid Ass'ad Shehebar, 17
- `Isa: Details of the Last Hours:
When the sun has set on the 13th of January, 2009, it took `Isa Abu `Idah to his final end. The boy was sitting at the door of his house waiting for the Maghrib prayer. At that moment a wagon full of animal fodder passed by him. Few minutes have passed then the Israeli warplanes launched their missiles at the wagon and the shrapnel of the missiles were all over the place. The shrapnel hit `Isa in different spots of his body; a splinter settled in his head, chest, arms, legs, stomach, and in his back. The boy fell on the ground but his heart was still beating. Afterwards, he was transferred to the hospital and stayed there for two days struggling for his life but he could not. Then he closed his eyes for good, declaring his death on the 15th of January, leaving sorrow and pain in the hearts of his family.
Other Information:
His mother wept to the extent that the tears did not leave her eyes and cheeks. Moments before his death, he spoke few words with his mother: "Do not go out my son." He replied: "With Allah's Willing, I will not stay for long."
However, he stayed for a long time and will last there forever. After she had dried her flowing tears, she said: "When I saw him for the last time, his face was bright with a smile that I have never seen and his eyes were glittering, so his face looked like a full moon."
The seventeen-years-old `Isa was preparing himself to take the first term tests — the first secondary grade — which he left for two years because he was busy helping his father in planting the land. No one forced him to go back as no one forced him to leave school; he chose it himself.
He came back to school with a dream that settled in his heart and an ambition that controlled his mind which was to finish high school then college.
His mother said: "After his return to school, he took serious procedures for that stage. He doubled the hours of his study and seemed to be more dedicated to his school homework. He supplicated Allah many times to make him succeed and grant him knowledge in order to benefit his religion, himself, and his family. His sister's husband, who was in the UAE, promised to give him a mobile if he succeeded in his study, but `Isa left without completing his study."
When you ask about `Isa in the neighborhood the eyes of the questioned will shed tears for him because of his good reputation, good manners, and noble qualities. He was characterized by his manners and good behaviors, and was loved by everyone because he never turned down any body.
Even the women of his neighborhood miss him. One of them remembered that she sent him to the grocery to buy her some stuff that ran out during the war. He went there fast, brought what she needed then left. Hours later, he came back at night —under the severe bombard— knocked at the door, and gave her half a shekel, the remnant of the money that he used to buy her stuff. He came apologizing for he had forgotten to pay it back because he was busy meeting the needs of an old man in the alley.
The lady neighbor says: "Isa was very honest and did not care for the bombard or the shells, but he only cared for rendering trusts back. May Allah bestow mercy on his soul." -
