This Thursday, a protest against the illegal settlement of “City of David” in Silwan, obliges settlers to delay a concert planned there
Palestinian Residents from Silwan and Solidarity activists conducted a protest in front of the settler-center “ City of David” objecting to the concerts that have been held by the settlers for the past three weeks in Silwan. The timing of the concerts is considered suspicious according to the residents, for they take place at the time of Ramadan Muslim prayer, “ Taraweeh”.
The loud concerts in the heart of Silwan are perceived as an attempt to domineer and confuse the prayers . In addition, at the time of the concert a military check-point is put up on the northern entrance of Wadi Hilweh neighborhood, preventing worshippers to reach al Aqsa Mousque.
Right-wing extremists tried to assault the protesters and urged the police to stop the demonstration. According to the Silwan residents, some of the workers of the ELAD organization (which runs “City of David”) were present, addressing police officers with faces full of anger, trying to persuade them to stop the protest

Community Organizer to PNN: New Tunnel Under Silwan to the Western Wall
In a phone call with PNN Diyab said this is the seventh tunnel to be dug in the village. The tunnel connects Silwan water wells all the way up towards the north and goes under the old road to Al-Aqsa mosque, he said.
The tunnel connects an Israeli settlement in Silwan to the Western Wall, said Diyab.
The tunnel will be opened within a month, said Diyab, and will connect all the past tunnels together. He warned that residents' houses have suffered damage due to digging under their foundation.
During the work in digging the tunnel, Diyab told PNN, workers found a golden bell dating back to the second era of Jerusalem.
As part of their efforts to prove claims of the ancient Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem, settler organizations and right-wing groups have persuaded the Israeli government to dig tunnels under the old city of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, as well as nearby neighborhoods.
Diyab said the digging has caused a great amount of damage to the Al-Aqsa compound, the third holiest site for Muslims worldwide.

WATCH: Palestinian youth abducted in Silwan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dsip9e2yS8
While Israelis are busy pitching tents across the country, in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, life under occupation goes on as usual, far away from the media’s eyes. In the shocking footage below, taken with a surveillance camera last Friday, July 22, Palestinian teens playing soccer in the street are suddenly abducted by Israeli soldiers in an undercover vehicle and hauled away. Whether guilty of stone throwing or not, this is not the way to go about conducting justice in a country’s capital.
As Sloveninan philosopher Slavoj Zizek has expressed many times, when there are no big headlines in the news about confrontations between Israelis and Palestinians, one should assume the mundane atrocities of daily occupation are taking place, in what is a very asymmetrical conflict.
It is not surprising that the Sheikh Jarrah Solidarity Movement and other anti-occupation figures have therefore demanded that several Israeli musicians scheduled to perform in the City of David in a concert sponsored by the Ministry of Culture refuse to do so. The City of David is a self-described “archaeological park” located in the heart of Silwan and operated by Elad, an organization with an agenda of moving Jews into this densely-populated Palestinian neighborhood.

Israeli authorities impose house arrest on Palestinian child
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- An Israeli court has imposed house arrest on a 15-year-old Palestinian child in Silwan town in occupied Jerusalem.
The committee for the defense of Silwan said in a press release on Sunday that the child, Khaled Uwaida, was ordered to remain in his family home until 15 October and detained his ID until end of the period.
It pointed out that the kid was apprehended in front of his home in Bustan suburb on 1 June at the hands of a special unit and was held in custody for 25 days during which he was constantly beaten. It added that Uwaida was banished from Silwan until 5 August when he was held under house arrest.

Israeli judges crack down on dissent
Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC) -- The bias of the Israeli judicial system has become increasingly overt in recent months, as the calls of Israeli police for the “punishment” of Silwan’s Palestinian residents appear to be answered.
As Silwan’s people attempt to confront the spread of Israeli settlements and Municipality-enacted house demolitions in their neighborhoods, judges appear to be cracking down on dissent. Several residents have been convicted of fabricated charges in recent months, with judges heeding no thought for justice.

Palestinian residents of Silwan suffer under the City of David settelment “improvement” project
Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC) -- Israeli developers overseeing the “Improvement of the City of David settelment ” project in Silwan are engaging in underhanded retaliation to the Israeli Supreme Court’s ruling that an important part of the construction project is illegal.
Those punished are the residents of Silwan themselves. Israeli construction crews have taken to working on the streets of Silwan themselves, leaving gaping holes in the roads, a serious safety issue for residents. Many children, women and elderly people have already been injured when falling into the holes, and indeed several cars have crashed as a result.
Despite complaints lodged by the residents of mWadi Hilweh, the worst-affected district of Silwan, Israeli authorities have paid no attention thus far, instead spreading rumours to sow disunity amongst the community.
Authorities have requested that the court’s decision be waived in order to complete the project, a request that has been refused. Muriya, the company contracted for the project, have stated however that they intend to complete the contested Wadi Hilweh parking lot project. The Jerusalem Municipality intends to eliminate street parking on Wadi Hilweh Street, claiming that the street is not wide enough, without offering a viable alternative to the community.
The “Improvement” project is of benefit only to the settlement movement in Silwan and the associated tourism industry. The Municipality has a strong working relationship with settlement association Elad, a relationship that translates into unbridled support for the settlement enterprise in the village.

Images reveal the extent of construction violations in Wadi Hilweh
Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC) -- The following images reveal the continuing Israeli construction work in Wadi Hilweh, despite a Supreme Court ruling that the work be halted. These photos, obtained by Silwanic, show a newly-drilled set of holes. Another collapse occured in Wadi Hilweh Street yesterday.
Residents have sought to secure the safety of their streets themselves by fitting an iron cover over one of the holes, in the hopes of preventing further personal and vehicle damage. Vast amounts of construction rubble has been left unshifted from the pavement, making the streets impossible for residents to enjoy amidst the dust.

The shooting of Ahmed al-Qaraeen: two years on
Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC) -- Two years have passed since the shooting of Wadi Hilweh resident Ahmed al-Qaraeen. Qaraeen was shot by an extremist Israeli settler armed with an M-16 machine gun in Wadi Hilweh district of Silwan in both his legs, an attack the settler knew for which he would go unpunished.
Ahmed “Abu Wadee’h” al-Qaraeen continues to walk with crutches to this day, and lacks the strength for normal mobility. Qaraeen’s injuries have led to the loss of work and the ability to support himself, and as his injuries are unrecognised by Israeli authorities, receives no state support. Many of Qaraeen’s supporters have indeed been arrested by Israeli police.
Qaraeen has been the victim of frequently-reported assaults. Several months ago a member of the Israeli police attempted to arrest and physically assault him, then preventing medics from assisting Qaraeen.
