Marwan Faraj El-Zayegh
First Wanted Member
Childhood
During the October 1973 war, Marwan was born in Gaza to a conservative family whose economic situation was below average. He had two brothers and two sisters, and grew up in the harsh Gaza environment, which made him mature beyond his years. He helped his father during school vacations, and was a boy of calm demeanor, who never brought home a problem to his parents; and his manners were exemplary among his peers.
When the first Intifada started, Marwan was 14 years old. But he was a strong boy because of his work in brickworks with his father. He was actively participating in demonstrations and confrontations against he occupation army. In addition, he was very active in the Aybaki mosque and participated in the construction of the mosque. His favorite times were when he joined his brothers from the mosque on trips to groves and orchards among trees and the open air.
Marwan the Young
Marwan was one of the youngest members of Hamas in his area despite his young age. Marwan was arrested for 18 days after being detained during a demonstration. Afterwards, he accepted Ashraf Ba’lougi’s offer to avenge his fellow Palestinians by killing a number of occupiers.
Massacres every where
On 20 May 1990, Marwan woke up to the sounds of protest and the signs of anger. One of his brothers told him that a Zionist had killed 7 Palestinian laborers. His heart was filled with rage, “was it not enough that they were killing us in Gaza, Jabalia, Khan Younis, Ramallah, Al-Khalil, Bethelehem and the rest of our land?” The fire raged and none could quench it. And on 8 Oct 1990, Marwan learned of the slaughter of 20 Palestinians in Al-Aqsa mosque. The fire which raged within his heart doubled and he was set and determined to avenge the innocent laborers and worshippers.
The result of Massacres
On 14 December 1990, the 17-year old youth prayed the morning prayer in the Sidra mosque in Gaza City and met Ashraf Ba’louji, a member of the Hamas cell Marwan was leading. After the prayer, both men hid knives in their bags and joined the laborers headed to work inside Palestine. The journey was a remembrance of the laborers who were slaughtered 7 months earlier. It was the first time Marwan entered the beloved Palestine, whereas Ashraf was working there in an aluminum factory.
The two reached the factory one hour before it opened. They waited till the factory opened and entered when the Jewish laborers came. The couple drew one of them to a corner and started their vengeance trail. After killing three, Ashraf was injured and they halted the operation. After spraying a wall with Hamas slogans, they split up.
Ashraf headed to the West Bank where he was arrested. And Marwan made it safely to Gaza, where he went home to say farewell to his family at 10:30 a.m. Marwan’s long road of pursuit against the occupation had started.
After the 14 December operation in Yaffa, Marwan left Gaza City and pioneered Al-Qassam experience of pursuit against the occupation. He lived in groves and in rural areas in the central part of the Gaza Strip. After meeting up with other fellow members of Al-Qassam Brigades, Marwan resumed his work with them against the collaborators who were betraying their people. In addition, the Brigades started to work actively against occupation soldiers and settlers.
The pursuit against the occupation was not without a price. The occupation forces detained 15 members of Marwan’s family and relatives. They raided his family’s house more than 100 times before sealing it and rendering his family homeless.
Eventually, Marwan and his Qassam colleagues moved back to Gaza City, where movement was easier. They continued their defiance of the occupation and work against its presence on their land. And in the few meetings he had with his father, Marwan always told him to be patient when he hears the news of his martyrdom. And he stressed upon his father that if that happens, to distribute sweet drinks befitting a wedding rather than mourning. And Marwan always asked his colleagues to pray for his martyrdom.
On 14 November 1991, Engrossed in the life of challenge and resistance, Marwan was about to enter his second year of pursuit. He was injured by a bullet fired by mistake, and was sitting with his colleagues remembering Tariq Dukhan. They thought that he was better than all of them because he beat them Paradise.
A group of mujahideen left with two submachine guns on a mission. And Marwan, Yaser El-Hasanat, and Mohammad Qandil stayed in the hideout with a handgun and a grenade. After conducting their night prayer, each went to his corner reciting from the Quran. Meanwhile, the occupation forces started to besiege the house, and the 3 heroes made preparations for their stand despite the lack of weapons.
Martyrdom … Marwan accepted the challenge and went down honorably.
As the troops moved to storm the house from all sides, Yaser threw the grenade at the soldiers. On the stairs, Marwan holding the gun met a high ranking officer (colonel) in the border police. Marwan emptied his gun in the officer’s chest. The three heroes ended their heroic stand by killing the colonel and injuring 3 soldiers according to the occupation army sources.
After the death of the three martyrs, the whole Gaza Strip went up in protest and confrontation against the occupation forces. Marwan’s father was steadfast and patient in his mourning. And the occupation army revised its tactics after suffering relatively heavy casualties against 3 mujahideen armed with a handgun and a grenade. Afterwards, the occupation army would use rockets and bombs against the mujahideen and avoid direct confrontation. - Chronology of Terrorist Attacks in Israel

Adnan Aziz Meriy
“For some, heroism is a dream they strive to achieve. But few are those whose actions define heroism”
The formation of Ezzedeen Al-Qassam Brigades in the Northern West Bank was the fruit of the work of a 4-member command team: Yehya Ayyash, Adnan Mer’iy, Ali Asi, and Zahir Jabarin. Working in adverse conditions, the 4 are credited with building a network of Ezzedeen Al-Qassam apparatus in the northern West Bank which carried out sustained, escalating resistance operations against occupation forces and settlers inside and outside the West Bank. Three of the leaders have been martyred and one is imprisoned. The success of these leaders lies in their leadership by example; and not by leadership by remote control.
Name: Adnan Aziz Mer’iy
Nickname: Abu Mujahid
Birth date: 1968
Martyrdom date: 6 August 1993
Hometown: Qarawit Bani Hassan
Residence: Qarawit Bani Hassan
“When you grow up, I’ll take you up to the mountains and make you a brave fighter” Adnan talking to his one-month old son.
Childhood and Education:
Adnan was born in a religious family where the children were cared for and loved very much. The Islamic upbringing was completed by the mosque. As to formal education, Adnan studied his basic and secondary education is his village schools. Then he joined the Qalqilya Shar’eya College, where he joined the Muslim Brotherhood in 1987. In 1988, he was arrested for 20 days, after which he was unable to continue his education because of the occupation’s closure of colleges and higher education institutions.
Intifada Activist:
Adnan was one of the most active Intifada soldiers in his village. He took part in demonstrations and confrontations against the occupation, at a heavy price. In one instance, occupation soldiers imposed a curfew on his village. Adnan and other activist confronted the soldiers, and he sustained a bullet wound in his leg. Due to the curfew, Adnan was transported to a clinic on horseback after taking a mountain road out of the village. A year later, he sustained rubber-coated steel bullet wounds in another demonstration.
Due to his activity, occupation troops put Adnan on their wanted list. But he eluded them with various tricks and security measures.
In 1989, he got married; but two months later was imprisoned by occupation forces.
Imprisonment:
After tips from traitors in 1989, occupation soldiers tracked Adnan. They arrested him on a temporary checkpoint. Adnan served a 30-month sentence for membership in Hamas, throwing Molotov cocktail bombs on occupation army patrols, and blowing up the water reservoirs of illegal settlements.
In prison, Adnan was an active member in the prisoners’ security network in different prisons. And on the family front, his wife gave birth to their first child, a girl he named “Bara’a.”
From Soldier to Leader:
After his release, Adnan was determined to continue along the road of resistance and liberation. And he was determined never to go back to prison. In 1992, Adnan joined the “Quartet Team” consisting of, along side Adnan, the leaders Yehya Ayyash, Ali Asi, and Zahir Jabarin. The 4 leaders established the network of Ezzedeen Al-Qassam cells in the northern West Bank. They planned and executed many martyrdom operations and armed attacks against occupation troops.
Soon afterwards, Adnan was on the occupation’s wanted list. He spent the last 6months of his life in the mountains and valleys of the West Bank. And he considered these short months the best in his life.
Adnan’s family paid a heavy price at the hands of barbaric occupation soldiers who stormed the family house every day or two. Once, the commanding officer of the troops dropped a sound bomb in front of 7-month old Mujahid. But the terrorism against his family only increased Adnan’s resolve and determination.
In a visit to his house, a traitor informed occupation troops that Adnan was in his house. Immediately troops came and surrounded the house. They spent the whole day searching the house but to no avail. Adnan had prepared a secret hideout in the house, where he spent the whole day in a room that occupation troops searched repeatedly! Over 100 soldiers and tens of army vehicles left the house in utter failure. Adnan continued to visit his house once a week despite the danger. And more than once, he escaped his pursuers.
Martyrdom:
On 6 August 1993, Adnan was on a date with destiny. The place was the “Deir Ballout” checkpoint south of the village of Salfil. After surveying the place for a few days, Adnan and Ali Asi decided to attack the checkpoint. Their driver was Mohammad Rayyan.
In the morning the group crept close to the checkpoint and opened fire at the soldiers. Two occupations were killed and another was seriously injured. A 4th soldier who wasn’t at the scene came back and exchanged fire with the mujahideen. Adnan was hit with a few bullets in his chest and died. Mohammad Rayyan was injured in the leg and arrested. Ali Asi managed to escape.
With this operation, Adnan punctuated his pioneering resistance role in the West Bank. He was a leader who led by example. Having planned and coordinated scores of resistance operations, that didn’t stop him from fighting and showing his soldiers the way to freedom and liberation.

Ashraf El-Sayyed
“Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord” (translated meaning of verse 169 in Sura “Family of Omran”)
“A message to those that love Allah and His Messenger, to those who love the path of truth and Palestine, I give you my body and sell myself to Allah the Lord of Pride, the High in his His Highness, whose Names are Sacred.”
Your son and brother Ashraf El-Sayyed, Abu Hamza.
With these words, Ashraf El-Sayyed ended another story of heroism. He was not the first and will not be the last hero on the Qassam road. Palestine is blessed by martyrs and is rich with their jihad and sacrifice. The love story between the dark earth and the red blood is the end of a dream in the hearts of youth longing for freedom. It is a jihad to achieve that dream or to die for its sake.
Ashraf El-Sayyed, is a name that can be translated into “Noble Master.” And our martyr possessed a good share of that name. He was born on 8 May 1978. In the heart of Nablus, Ashraf grew up in the warmth of a Muslim family and was educated in Mazoz Mosque. Ashraf was a man whose face always had a warm and welcoming smile. When he spoke with others, he was polite and eloquent. He radiated steadfastness, strength and determination. Everyone that knew him during his life time loved him. And with his martyrdom, those that didn’t know him loved him as well.
Ashraf joined the jihad journey at a young age, participating in demonstrations and other popular activities during his teens, as a member of Hamas youth movement. His dream of victory or martyrdom was not far off. The enemy was occupying the land and killing its inhabitants. He prepared well for a wish that he truly wanted to achieve.
Jamal Mansour, Jamal Salem, Fahim Dawabsha, Othman Qatnani, Omar Mansour, Mohammad Beshawi, and the two children Ashraf and Bilal Abu Khader were murdered in an Apache strike on 31 July 2001. To Ashraf, this signaled the close fulfillment of his dream. The blood bath perpetrated by the occupation forces gave life to many dead souls and enraged the desire for freedom among the complacent. Al-Qassam Brigades promised to avenge the massacre; and Ashraf was determined to be the first bullet.
On 8 August 2001, Ashraf drove a car loaded with explosives towards the “Hamra” military checkpoint manned by the troops of the Zionist occupation army. The checkpoint was a witness to the suffering of civilians moving along the roads of the West Bank. A short distance before the checkpoint, Ashraf parked the car on the side of the road and got out. Was it a moment of hesitation? Or did he change his mind?
Ashraf prayed two “Raka’a” to have his last act in this world an act of worship to Allah. He got back to the car, repeating the verse (meaning), “I have hastened to you my Lord to gain your acceptance.” This was the same saying prophet Moussa (Moses, Moshe) when he went to the appointed place to receive the revelations from Allah.
Ashraf reached the checkpoint and found the soldiers in their regular acts of occupation and humiliation of the land and its people. He got close to the soldiers and detonated the car.
The Zionists kept a low profile about the operation and didn’t announce its results. They knew that the reply to their massacre of 31 July 2001 was coming; and that Ashraf was the first drop in the storm.
Ashraf’s body was withheld by the Zionist occupation authorities before it was finally delivered to Nablus. The Noble Master was buried in the land he loved after he died defending it.

Asem Yousef Riehan, 21
Birth date: 2 July 1981
Martyrdom date: 12 September 2001
Hometown: Tal Village (near Nablus)
Residence: Tal Village
Asem attained martyrdom 20 days after his brother Mohammad was killed in a gun battle against occupation troops near their home. For 20 days, Asem was a martyr walking on earth. His scent was that of musk. His family knew he was coming into a room because his scent preceded him. And after his martyrdom, his chair in the garden smelled of rich musk. Asem was to attain martyrdom in the best possible way, after inflicting heavy damage among enemy ranks.
Childhood and Education:
Asem Yousef Riehan was born in a religious family in the village of Tal, 5 km to the west of Nablus. Asem was the last of 9 children born in that family. And all the children were raised as Muslims in their morals and dedication to their religion and society. Asem was enrolled in schools and frequented the village mosque since his childhood. And among his peers, he was noted for his bravery and steadfastness. In addition, he was a sportsman, achieving an advanced black belt in Karate.
In his teens and early adulthood, Asem was known for his strength, vigor and unequaled bravery. He frequently went on hunting trips in the open fields. He was a young man in love with his country and people.
After finishing his secondary education in 1998, Asem enrolled in the college of economics at Al-Najah University in Nablus. There he was a member of the Islamic Bloc and worked in the Dawa committee under the leadership of Mo’ayyed Salah E’Deen, the martyr who carried out the Bakka El-Sharqiyya operation. And it turned out that Asem’s graduation would be much more spectacular than the expected one at the university.
Emmanuel Settlement:
On Friday 12 September 2001, the ultra-nationalist settlers in Emmanuel settlement near the Palestinian village of Jiensafous were on a date to repay part of the debt they owed Palestinians. Living on usurped land and abusing and killing Palestinians for years, the bill had become quite long. The due payment was to be delivered through Asem Riehan.
A group of 3 fighters planted a roadside bomb on the road frequented by the settlers and occupation army patrols. As soon as the settlers’ bus passed the settlement gates, the bomb exploded destroying the vehicle. Following the explosion, occupation army troops and ambulances rushed to the scene to secure the area and rescue the wounded.
But Asem was waiting for them to gather to carry out the next phase of the operation. Behind a rock, his heart full of remembrance of Allah, he bid his time and chose his target: an occupation army patrol consisting of 2 officers and 3 soldiers.
Asem jumped out from behind his cover and rushed down the slope like an avalanche. He emptied 11 magazines into the occupiers and settlers and none could return fire. Asem’s storm was too much for any of the occupiers to withstand. Finally, an occupation soldier rammed Asem with his vehicle after the latter’s bullets were exhausted.
The undeclared tally of the operation was 22 killed and 10 in critical condition as reported by the occupation liaison on Hebrew channels. They justified the high toll by pointing to the fact that the jeeps and ambulances were not armored against bullets.
With this epic operation, Asem lay to rest. His duty was fulfilled and his brother avenged. The occupation and its settlers would know that their crimes must be repaid sooner or later.
Asem’s mother says that 15 minutes before the operation, her son called her. His voice was normal and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. He asked them to pray for him because he is preparing for a tough test. He talked to every member of the family before hanging up.
