Islamic Jihad: Israel trying to drag us into war
Gaza – Ma’an - Islamic Jihad's Al-Quds Brigades affirmed resistance factions' readiness to confront any attack on Gaza, spokesman Abu Ahmad announced Friday.
He told Ma’an by phone that “the latest Israeli military escalation on Gaza comes within ongoing attempts by the occupation to provoke the resistance by dragging it into a military confrontation."
The comments came after a sequence of 14 mortar shells were reported fired at Israeli targets by the Popular Resistance Committees' militant wing, which were followed Friday morning by a series of four airstrikes all across the Gaza Strip.
On Friday afternoon the PRC issued a call for "retaliation" for the airstrikes. Later Friday the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine's military wing said it launched four mortars at Israeli targets.
The recent airstrikes and a series of limited incursions were what Abu Ahmad called Israeli aims to taunt the resistance in Gaza. The spokesman also cited targeted assassinations of resistance leaders as a method to antagonize factions.
"They can’t stop the projectiles of the resistance," Abu Ahmad said, dismissing recent reports that Israel is completing work on an anti-rocket system.
The resistance is developing its expertise, he said. "The occupation's attempts will fail in weakening the spirit of resistance, and that could change the equation of the circumstances in the region."

Hamas: Soldier killed by Egyptian bullet, not Palestinian
Gaza – Ma'an – Hamas members were not behind the shooting death of an Egyptian soldier during protests that turned violent earlier int he week, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told Ma'an on Saturday.
“Hamas has information that confirms the Egyptian soldier was shot by the Egyptian forces opening fire at Palestinian protesting the attack against the Lifeline [British Member of Parliament George Galloway's] convoy,” the official said.
The de facto Ministry of Interior, Abu Zuhri said, has undertaken investigations into the incident, the results of which will be announced upon completion.
“We shall not forget that 35 Palestinians were injured during the recent clashes with the Egyptian forces, including two deaths,” the spokesman said.
Abu Zuhri accused the Egyptian authorities of using the death of the Egyptian solider in the media to cover up the construction of the US funded steel wall, aimed at curbing the Gaza smuggling tunnel industry.
Hamas officials have been in contact with Egypt to contain the crisis, he said, adding that "it is clear that the relationship between Hamas and Cairo needs a special meeting to organize the basics of the relation and alleviate recent developments, which were caused by the steel wall decision."
The Egyptian media reacts
Meanwhile, the Egyptian daily Al-Jumhouriya described Hamas a gang on its front page. "We were surprised that the Gazan candidates turned into a gang that rules with metal and fire, benefiting from the smuggling of drugs, Viagra and food."
"If we leave the Gaza gang to continue out of control, they will bring Al-Qaeda to the Sinai," said editor-in-chief of the daily Muhammad Ali Ibrahim.
"We tell this Gaza gang that claims heroism, whose officials sleep in palaces in Damascus and eat the best food on earth, while leaving their people without food and shelter, that it is time to be questioned. History has never witnessed such a gang that imposes its opinion on a country."

Militant groups claim attack on Israeli tower
Gaza – Ma’an – The Al-Aqsa Brigades and the Imad Mughaniyah group, armed wings of Fatah, and the Abu Al-Qumans military council, claimed responsibility on Friday for an attack against the largest transmission tower west of the Erez border crossing, northern Gaza.
"This attack confronted recent Israeli invasions, attacks and assassination of six leaders of the Imad Mughaniyah and Al-Quds Brigades [Islamic Jihad's paramilitary wing]" a joint statement issued by the groups said.
According to the statement the tower was hit directly. Residents told Ma'an that loud explosions were heard near the Erez crossing, but that the cause was unknown.

Armed groups in Gaza claim responsibility for shelling Israeli port
Gaza – Ma'an – Various paramilitary groups in Gaza claimed responsibility for firing eight shells at the port of Ashkelon, Israel, a joint statement issued by the groups said.
The attack was undertaken in retaliation for "the assassination of the Al-Aqsa Brigades leaders in Nablus by Israeli forces," the statement said, which was issued by members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of Fatah, Islamic Jihad's armed group The Al-Quds Brigades, and the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, the An-Nasser Salah Ad-Ding Brigades.
An Israeli military spokesman said that they were "not familiar" with any such attacks on the port.

Fatah wing claims responsibility for Wednesday stabbing attack
Bethlehem – Ma'an – The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Fatah's armed wing, claimed responsibility on Friday for the stabbing death of an Israeli soldier near Nablus on Wednesday.
Abu Al-Majd, a leader of the armed wing, identified the attacker as Muhammad Al-Khatib, the same Palestinian who Israeli forces took into custody on suspicion of carrying out the attack.
"Al-Khatib, a brigades activist, carried out this attack in response to ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestinians and the assassination of three brigade affiliates in Nablus two months ago," Al-Majd said in a phone interview.
Al-Majd threatened that the Fatah-affiliated faction would carry out more "substantive" attacks in the near future. He also said the delay in claiming responsibility was for security reasons.

Fatah wing: Israeli forces targeted in Gaza
Gaza – Ma'an – Fatah's military wing said it attacked an undercover Israeli army unit that breached the border in northern Gaza on Thursday, claiming to have hurled an explosive.
In a statement, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said the explosive charge struck members of the Israeli unit "directly," and that "there were deaths and injuries among the soldiers."
The supposed attack "comes in response to [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's statements on including the Ibrahimi Mosque on a list of [Israeli] heritage sites," the statement said, and "as a confirmation of ongoing resistance in order to stabilize national unity among Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, and within the ongoing response to the killing of three [Fatah] leaders in Nablus" last December.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said that, after an initial inquiry, the army was aware of no such attack.

Gaza fighters claim cross-border shooting
Gaza – Ma'an – Fighters affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said they fired on Israeli farmers north of the Gaza Strip on Thursday.
In a statement, the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades said their snipers fired on "a group of settler farmers north of Beit Hanoun."
The leftist group said the cross-border attack was "in response to [Israel's] repeated crimes against Jerusalem and Hebron."
An Israeli military spokesman said he was not aware of an attack on soldiers or civilians, after an initial inquiry. There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.
On Monday, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees said a fighter was killed by Israeli shelling in northern Gaza. The army confirmed the shelling, which it said came after PRC fighters attempted to plant an explosive device near the border.

Bethlehem - Ma'an - A homemade projectile fired from the Gaza Strip landed in southern Israel on Thursday, the Israeli military said.
An Israeli military spokesman said there were no immediate reports of injury or damage.
The projectile, which was said to have landed in the Eshkol region east of Gaza, was the fourth such attack reported in 24 hours.

Sonic booms over Gaza after projectile kills Thai worker
Bethlehem - Ma'an - No strikes or injuries were reported after Gaza residents reported hearing what sounded like a dozen explosions across the Strip on Thursday, hours after the death of a Thai worker hit by projectile fire.
The Fatah-affiliated Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed to have fired the projectile that killed the foreign worker, in a statement moments after reports from Ashkelon police said a man was injured while working in the greenhouses of the Terra Seva region of the southern Israeli town.
Gaza's director of ambulance and emergency services, Muawiya Hassanein, said no injuries or damages were reported in Gaza, and that officials believed the sounds were the results of sonic booms and not airstrikes.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed the death of the unidentified man, and said the projectile strike was the third in 24 hours. No earlier injuries were reported from the two other projectiles.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the projectile attack, stressing that all acts of violence are "totally unacceptable."
"All such acts of terror and violence against civilians are totally unacceptable and contrary to international law," a representative said in statement issued in Moscow, where the secretary-general was scheduled to meet other members of the Quartet on Friday.

Al-Qassam releases footage of Gaza clashes
Bethlehem - Ma'an - Hamas' military wing released footage Thursday purportedly showing an attack that left two Israeli soldiers dead in the Gaza Strip last week. Two Palestinian operatives were also killed in the fighting.
The video, posted on the Web site of the Al-Qassam Brigades, appears to corroborate reports that the clashes came as Israeli forces crossed westward into Gaza. Israel said its forces moved in after a bomb exploded near the border.
Hamas has insisted its operatives opened fire only after Israeli forces crossed 500 meters into Gaza.

PFLP wing claims 3 April projectile strike
Bethlehem - Ma'an - The Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said its forces targeted a military site near Nahal Oz, east of Gaza, with a C5K missile on Saturday.
"This action comes in the course of addressing the continuing crimes of the occupation against our people," the PFLP said in a statement, claiming that Israel's Haaretz newspaper and the Hebrew-language Army Radio confirmed that the rocket hit the military site.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said the army was not familiar with any such attack on Saturday.
Jamil Mizher, member of the Central Committee of the PFLP, commented to Al-Alam News a day earlier that the "threats of the occupation will not succeed in breaking the will of the Palestinian people or deterring the resistance." He said that the resistance factions have met in Gaza to coordinate mechanisms to "collectively confront Israeli aggression in Gaza."

Fatah-aligned Sami Al-Ghoul Brigades call for resistance
Gaza – Ma'an – A small militant brigade aligned with the Fatah movement announced its committment to continued resistance in a statement made public on Friday.
The group, known as the Sami Al-Ghoul Brigades, last claimed an attack on Israel one year ago, on Friday 17 April 2009. In a statement released at the time, which was reiterated almost word for word in the Friday statement, said the group was committed to resistance activities and called on all military wings of Palestinian factions to declare a state of high alert and be ready to defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem from colonizing settlers.
The latest statement, rather than rallying calls around the Al-Aqsa Mosque, called on all resistance brigades to stay committed to resistance and stay faithful to martyrs and detainees.
The statement also noted that they remain loyal to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and the caretaker Palestinian leadership.
The announcement comes amid efforts by the Gaza-based de facto government to limit projectile launches toward Israeli targets and the planting of improvised explosive devices along the Gaza no-go zone enforced by Israel, and used for regular patrols of the area.
In announcing a continued committment to resistance, the group appear to have refused the Hamas government program of quelling violent attacks in the short term.

Al-Aqsa claims responsibility for Ramallah attack
Bethlehem - Ma'an - A shooting attack that lightly injured two Israelis late Friday was carried out by Fatah's armed wing, the group said.
In a statement, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said its forces opened fire on a car belonging to settlers near the Ramallah junction at 6:45pm.
The group's forces confirmed a direct hit on the vehicles occupants, the statement said.
The attack came in response to the murder of a Palestinian boy by Israeli settlers the day before, the statement said.
It also amounted to a rejection of the expected start of indirect peace negotiations between Israel and the PLO, the statement concluded.

Israel army: 2 hurt by Palestinian fire
Bethlehem - Ma'an - Palestinians opened fire at an Israeli vehicle north of Ramallah late Friday, the Israeli military said, apparently in the same area where Israeli settlers allegedly killed a Palestinian teenager a day earlier.
Two Israeli civilians were lightly injured by shattered glass, a military spokesman said. Forces were searching the area, he said.
Fatah's armed wing said its forces opened fire on a car belonging to settlers near the Ramallah junction at 6:45pm. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said its forces confirmed a direct hit on the vehicle's occupants.
The attack came in response to the murder of a Palestinian boy by Israeli settlers the day before, the group said in a statement. It also amounted to a rejection of the start of indirect peace talks, the statement said.
The teenager allegedly shot dead by settlers late Thursday was identified Friday as Ayssar Yasser Al-Zaben, 16. Security sources said the teenager was shot after throwing stones at his attackers' car on Highway 60.
Palestinian medical sources said Al-Zaben's body was found three hours after he died. An examination at the Government Hospital in Ramallah revealed that he was killed by a single shot in the upper back, penetrating his heart, medical officials said. The teenager bled to death, medics said.
Israeli military sources confirmed finding the boy's body. These sources confirmed that shots were fired in the area, as well as reports that children were throwing rocks at settler cars, but did not blame settlers.
