There were seven people in my family: my father, my late mother, my brothers and sisters, and me. We live in the Dhanabeh neighborhood of Tulkarm, in an apartment we rent on the second floor of a two-story house. The other apartment on our floor is inhabited by 'Abd a-Rahman al-Masri and his wife, Rauda Fahmawi. They do not have children. On the first floor there is an empty apartment and an apartment that was renovated three months ago and rented to a young man who wanted to get married and live there. He has not been at home much since he moved in. We have not seen him, and we don't know his name.
Last Sunday [30 April], my fianc?'s family invited my whole family to visit them the next day at their home, in Hajja. I wanted to get there refreshed, so I switched my shift at work at a-Zakat Hospital , in Tulkarm, with one of my friends, so I could work from two in the afternoon to nine at night, rather than from nine at night to nine in the morning.
I finished work at nine and went home. My parents and two of my sisters were at home. My brother Muhammad was not at home. He was at my aunt's house, in al-Fara'a. At 11:00 P.M., we all went to sleep. At 4:30 in the morning, I awoke in panic to the explosion of stun grenades in the street, near our house. The others in my family also woke up. I looked through the window and saw army jeeps parked about fifty meters from the house of our neighbor's, the 'Othmans. I heard soldiers call out on loudspeakers for the occupants of the house to go outside, without weapons. We thought they meant our neighbors, the 'Othmans, because they have young sons.
Mother went to the apartment across the hall and knocked on the door to ask what was happening. 'Abd a-Rahman and his wife were awake. They came to our apartment. We all sat in the living room, which is next to the kitchen with nothing separating them. The kitchen faces the 'Othman's house. My mother sat facing the kitchen window, my father was to her right, and next to him was Mr. al-Masri. I sat to the left of my mother, and Ansam and Rauda were next to me. The calls for the occupants to go outside continued. We continued to sit there and did not understand why they didn't go outside.
We sat there until about 5:15, all the time hearing calls on the loudspeaker and the sound of stun grenades exploding. At 5:00, we heard shots being fired. Then I heard the sound of glass shattering and saw that they were firing into our kitchen. I lost sensation in my left hand, which fell on my chest. When I tried to move away, I realized that I had also been hit in the right leg. I fell to the floor and began to scream, like everybody else in the house. The gunfire lasted for about a minute. One of my sisters got up and turned on the light, and I saw my mother sitting in her place.
I saw that she had been seriously wounded in the forehead, above the right eye. She was about to die. Our neighbor, 'Abd a-Rahman, [who is a diabetic, s.m.] was lying on the floor. I later learned that he had fainted. My father and sisters went outside, screaming as they went. I remained lying there on the floor. About ten minutes later, father came back, picked me up, and sat me down on a chair. He and Mrs. al-Masri took me outside. In the street, I saw lots of army jeeps.
More than fifty meters away was a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance. My father tried to get the soldiers to let the ambulance come close and take me, but the soldiers refused. My father, helped by my sister, picked me up again, and took me to the ambulance, which transported me to the government hospital in Tulkarm. I was X-rayed and treated. I was then taken to a-Zakat Hospital , where I underwent more tests. The physicians decided to transfer me to Rafidiya Hospital , in Nablus . One bullet had shattered bones in my right thigh. Three other bullets hit me in the left hand. The doctors operated on my hand and thigh. After that, I was taken to Al-Makassed Hospital , in Jerusalem , because I have to undergo more thigh and hand operations.
Ahlam Yusef Mahmoud Zalat, 21, is a nurse and a resident of Tulkarm. Her testimony was given to Karim Jubran at Al-Makassed Hospital, East Jerusalem, on 4 May 2006.

Death in Tulkarem
Human rights workers are seeking justice for an unarmed Palestinian mother killed in error by Israeli troops.
I meet Abd al-Karim Sa'adi on arriving in the West Bank town of Tulkarem. He is a field worker with B'Tselem, a respected Israeli human rights organisation that challenges Israeli violations of Palestinians' rights.
He is working on the case of Ettaf Zalat, a 45-year-old woman killed on May 1. Neighbours called him to the scene quickly and he entered the Zalat's flat as soon as the security forces left.
"At 3.30am Israeli special forces, an elite group who do the assassinations, and the regular army surrounded the area of Sufarine," he told me.
"They took up positions in the houses of neighbours and they shouted through loudspeakers, 'You should go out and hand yourself to the army.' But it was not specific, so nobody knew who they meant."
The Zalat family - teacher Yousef, Ettaf and their three daughters - dressed hurriedly and sat in the sitting room. At 5.12am, the eldest daughter, Ahlam, a 21-year-old nurse, took two bullets; the top of Etta's head was shot off; Ansam, 18, was hit in the abdomen; and the youngest, Anghram, 13, received a slight injury to her neck.
"I found brain on the ceiling and a piece of hair sticking to the ceiling," Sa'adi said. "The father [was] still sitting. He couldn't do anything, he was so shocked."
Sa'adi showed me the shells he had picked up and the photos of bits of Ettaf's hair sticking to the ceiling and of her brains splattered on her husband's dishdash.
The soldiers were after an alleged militant named Ayyad Muin who had recently rented a first-floor apartment using a fake ID, Sa'adi told me. But the Zalats live on the second floor.
"At 6.30am the Israeli defence ministry issued a statement saying, 'We are sorry to have killed an innocent person,'" he said.
The older daughter is still seriously ill in hospital, Sa'adi said, also expressing concern for the middle one. "She is in her last year in high school. She needs her mother to support her through the exams. Maybe there will be a case from our side. I think so. My organisation has put a lot into it."
I think of how the families of the British peace activist Tom Hurndall and the photographer James Miller struggled to get proper investigations into the deaths of their loved ones, and decide not to hold my breath.

Troops kill Palestinian taxi driver at a military checkpoint near Nablus
Israeli soldiers shot and killed on Thursday evening a Palestinian Taxi driver near Al Bathan Israeli checkpoint, north east of the West Bank city of Nablus; the driver dies instantly of his wounds.
The driver, Zakariyya Dharaghma, 40, from the West Bank city of Tubas, died before an ambulance that belongs to the Palestinian Medical Relief Associated managed to reach him. His body was transferred to Rafidia hospital in Nablus, and his relatives took his body later on and returned to his city, Tubas.
He suffered a life round that penetrated his chest and exited from his back, a medical source at Rafidia hospital reported.
Dharaghma was transporting passengers when he was stopped at the Israeli roadblock along with hundreds of residents and vehicles waiting to be allowed through after the soldiers closed the checkpoint without any apparent reason and barred the residents from crossing.
Taxi drivers tend to approach the checkpoint from an access road located to its east in order pick up passengers. The checkpoint also has mounds of earth placed around it in order to bar the residents from approaching the soldiers and to block straight driving on the road.
An Israeli army source claimed that Dharaghma approached a “closed zone” - and soldiers opened fired.
Earlier this week, Israeli troops detained a 15-year old Palestinian child after claiming that he attempted to bypass a line of people waiting to be inspected at Huwwara checkpoint, near Nablus.
Soldiers violently attacked the child, wrestled him to the ground and handcuffed him; the child was released later on.

Four killed, including child, mother, grandmother, in Israeli airstrike in Gaza
Four Palestinians were killed in an Israeli 'targeted assassination' on Saturday, and four more seriously injured. Three of those killed were a child, his mother, and his grandmother, travelling in a car behind the 'targeted' vehicle, which was hit by two missiles fired from a helicopter by the Israeli airforce.
Israeli and international human rights groups have previously issued condemnations of the Israeli practice of 'targeted assassinations', which are illegal under international law, arguing that civilians often end up being the victims.
In the month of April, Israeli soldiers killed 37 Palestinians, including 6 children, in fourteen assassination attacks. Israeli missiles fired in airstrikes have killed children at home, at school, in cars and on the streets in Gaza.
Two missiles fired by an Israeli aircraft targeted a car in which Mohammed Dahduh, a senior operative of the "Al-Quds Brigades," the military wing of Islamic Jihad, was travelling, Israeli sources said Saturday. The missiles destroyed the car, killing Dahduh, and tearing apart the car behind him, which killed a grandmother and mother, and one of the two children in the backseat. The other child in the car was seriously injured, medics reported. The family members were identified as Hanan Aman, 25; her five-year-old son, Muhind; and the woman's mother-in-law, Naima, 45. Mariyah Aman, 3, is in serious condition.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Elderly Palestinian dies of heart failure after being beaten at Israeli checkpoint
A Palestinian man with heart problems died after being beaten in the head and chest by Israeli soldiers at a military checkpoint in Abu Dees suburb, south of occupied East Jerusalem, Tuesday evening.
Local sources said that Shehda Muheissin, 51, was on his way to Al Mkased hospital in the city , and was stopped at Al Sheikh Saad military checkpoint by Israeli soldiers.
