Yahya Atta Bani Menna 18
Palestinian shepherd shot dead
A Palestinian shepherd was found shot dead in the occupied West Bank on Sunday and Palestinians accused Jewish settlers of killing him.
"The body of a bedouin youth was found by one of his family members. (Israeli) police have opened an investigation after a forensic examination showed he had been shot," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
He was identified as Yahya Atta Bani Menna, 18, from the village of Aqraba, near the Palestinian city of Nablus.
Shepherds from the village said there had been a white car in the area belonging to settlers and they had heard the sound of gunfire, but did not see him being shot, members of his family told Reuters.
Unidentified witnesses quoted by the Palestinian newspaper al-Ayyam said two settlers armed with automatic rifles followed the teenager in their car and then fired about 20 bullets into him in the daylight incident on Saturday.
"We are examining the bullets and type of gun, trying to find out who was behind (the shooting). Everything is open at the moment," Rosenfeld said.
A Palestinian Authority official in the local governor's office said: "We put the responsibility for the killing on Jewish settlers."
Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert accused inhabitants of the Jewish settlement of Yitzhar, in the Nablus area, of mounting a "pogrom" on a nearby Palestinian village after a Jewish child was wounded in a stabbing. Three Palestinians were shot and wounded in the setters' attack.

Yahya Atta Rayahin Bani Minnah 18
Settlers murder 18 year old boy from the village of Aqraba, Nablus
On Saturday 27 September settlers from the illegal outpost of Itamar settlement, to the east of Nablus city, executed 18 year old shepherd Yahya Atta Rayahin Bani Minnah from Aqraba village.
Yahya Minnah had left the village of Aqraba in the early morning along with a number of other shepherds to graze their sheep in the Alifjem area 10km from Aqraba village. This area had been stolen by Israel after 1967 and declared a closed military zone. The area covers over 80% of the fertile land for Aqraba and contains essential farmland with over 20,000 goats and sheep grazing in the area.
Shortly after Iftar (the breaking of the day-long fast during the Holy month of Ramadan) goats and sheep belonging to Yahya returned to the village of Aqraba without their shepherd. Relatives and local villagers immediately became concerned for his safety and went out to search the surrounding area. At approximately 22:00 that evening they made the shocking discovery, finding Yahya with multiple bullet wounds to his body.
The villagers called the Israeli army and police who attended the scene at approximately 23:30 where an Israeli army physician examined the body and told villagers the wounds were likely to have been inflicted by an M16 machine gun. This gun is the usual attire of settlers in the region.
Yahya had suffered between 3-4 bullet wounds to both the neck and chest with the remaining 6-8 bullet wounds inflicted upon his legs. It is believed that he was shot 20 metres from the site where his body was found which would be consistent with the blood seen by witnesses. Local shepherds in the area report seeing a white van containing two settlers driving to the area where Yahya was found dead at approximately 14:00 that day.
The Israeli DCO made contact with the local mayor of Aqraba, Jowdat Beni Jabr in order to ascertain if Yahya had any reason for dispute within Aqraba, however, witnesses to the settler presence have not as yet been contacted by the Israeli authorities. At 03:00 the next morning the army took the body of Yahya to the Abu Kabir Institute of Forensic Medicine in Israel for an autopsy, the body being returned to the village on Monday morning. Over a thousand villagers filled the streets of Aqraba for the funeral march to pay their respects to the young shepherd. Yahya was engaged and due to be married in the coming year.
In recent weeks settler attacks and violence in the villagers surrounding Nablus has increased. The murder of Yahya echoes the killing of a shepherd from Aqraba two years ago where settlers from the Itamar settlement attacked and killed in the same area. A settler is currently on trail in Israel for the murder, and villagers suspect that Yahya’s murder may have been an act of vengeance in connection with this trial.

Shepherd 'not killed by settler'
Yahya Minya's family and Palestinian officials blamed settlers for his death
A Palestinian found dead in the West Bank was not killed by Jewish settlers, Israeli police said, contradicting earlier claims by the man's family.
Shepherd Yahya Minya died from a shrapnel wound caused by a grenade, according to a police autopsy.
A police spokesman ruled out any possibility the grenade, of a type used by the Israeli military, was fired by residents of a nearby settlement.
Local people said Mr Minya was last seen being chased by settlers in a car.
"The autopsy showed the shepherd was killed from shrapnel from an explosion and not from gunshots," spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
"Investigations at the scene confirmed that the young man was killed by the explosion of a rifle grenade which he handled and that he either found there or was given to him," he added.
'Gunfire heard'
Mr Minya was from the Palestinian village of Aqraba, south of Nablus, in the Northern West Bank.
His relatives and Palestinian security officials had blamed settlers from the nearby Itamar settlement for causing his death.
Family members quoted by Reuters said there had been a white settler-owned car in the area and they had heard gunfire, although they did not see Mr Minya being shot.
His body was given a tradition martyr's funeral in the village, with the face exposed, but it was not clear what injuries he had received.
Several violent attacks have been reported on Palestinians by hardline Israeli settlers in recent months.
Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert accused inhabitants of the Jewish settlement of Yitzhar, also near Nablus, of mounting a "pogrom" on a nearby Palestinian village.

The ever-changing Israeli police reports
Within 48 hours of Yahya Atta Rayahin Bani Minnah’s death, the official Israeli statement on the cause of death changed considerably. As documented in previous report, the Israeli army physician who was present at the scene of the murder told the mayor of Aqraba, Mr Jabr, directly that the wounds were caused by M16 bullets. This was confirmed in official statements from the Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld, who is reported as saying:
“The body of a Bedouin youth was found by one of his family members. (Israeli) police have opened an investigation after a forensic examination showed he had been shot,”
He then went on to say that:
“We are examining the bullets and type of gun, trying to find out who was behind (the shooting). Everything is open at the moment.”
On the morning of Monday 29 September, however, Israeli police issued a press release stating that the autopsy carried out by the Abu Kadir Institute – an institution whose reputation has been marred by allegations of organ sales and false reporting – claimed the wounds were the result of a “rifle grenade”explosion.
“The autopsy showed the shepherd was killed from shrapnel from an explosion and not from gunshots,” spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
“Investigations at the scene confirmed that the young man was killed by the explosion of a rifle grenade which he handled and that he either found there or was given to him,” he added.
This about-face in the Israeli police version of events followed a wave of media reports in the wake of the murder, regarding the “crisis” that the increase in settler violence in the West Bank is causing for the Government, with MKs fighting over the issue. This problem is conveniently resolved, however, by the “no-fault” finding that appeared seemingly miraculously.
Such changes in official Israeli police and military statements are extremely common in cases of settler and Israeli military attacks on Palestinians.
The villages of Asira al Qibliya, Burin and Madama to the south of Nablus have also seen rampages by settlers and extreme violence in recent weeks. Settlers have also been responsible for the burning of vital olive trees that are the economic lifeline for many villages in the West Bank. With the olive harvest due to start in the next few weeks in these areas, and the refusal by the Israeli army to adequately protect villagers, it is vitally important for an international presence.

IDF troops kill Palestinian fire-bomber near West Bank settlement
17-year-old Palestinian shot dead near settlement of Beit El; IDF blows up tunnel in central Hebron.
Israel Defense Forces soldiers on Tuesday shot dead a 17-year-old Palestinian who tried to throw a fire bomb near the West Bank settlement of Beit El.
Troops found next to the teen's body a cache of ten other fire bombs, which he apparently planned on hurling at the settlement. According to the IDF, two other Palestinians fled the scene.
An IDF spokeswoman said that in light of a number of recent attacks in and around on the settlement an army squad had set up an ambush after dark on Tuesday, which subsequently caught the Palestinian.
Palestinian officials identified the dead teen as Abdel Kader Zeit from Jalazoun.
Earlier Tuesday, IDF engineers blew up a tunnel dug by Palestinians in central Hebron. The tunnel, which was some 100 meters long, was discovered by Palestinian police in the West Bank city during the Jewish Holiday of Sukkot.
After the Palestinians police had informed the Civil Administration of their discovery, the IDF examined the tunnel. The army is still investigating whether it was meant to facilitate a terror attack.

Third death in West Bank clashes
Relatives of the first fatality denied he was involved in petrol-bombing settlers
Palestinian medical workers say Israeli troops have shot dead a Palestinian man in a confrontation near the West Bank city of Ramallah.
The army said he was in a group of three people in Kufr Malik village, one of whom was carrying a firebomb.
Another Palestinian man died overnight after being critically wounded in a clash near a Jewish settlement.
The shooting happened during a protest about another killing on Tuesday of a teenager - also an alleged firebomber.
In the latest incident, Aziz Beerat, 20, was killed when Israeli soldiers in a jeep opened fire in Kufr Malik village, north-east of Ramallah, Palestinian emergency services said.
Another man was in a serious condition in hospital after being shot in the back.
The Israeli military said troops saw the silhouettes of three Palestinians preparing to throw petrol bombs and that the men ignored an order to surrender.
The three deaths were the first from Israeli military action in the West Bank for several weeks, prompting a Palestinian official to protest against what he described as an escalation.
"It looks as if the Israeli army has received instructions to carry out an escalation in the Palestinian territories," said negotiator Saeb Erekat, in comments reported by AFP news agency.
The army says there has been wave of firebombings around the Ramallah area and it has been stepping up efforts to stop them.
Firebomb denial
On Wednesday, 21-year-old Muhammad Rahami was fatally wounded during a protest near Jalazun refugee camp. Israeli police said Palestinians had thrown rocks at an army post.
The protest followed the funeral of Abdul Qadir Zeit, 17, killed by troops late on Tuesday near the Beit-El settlement, which is adjacent to Jalazun, deep in the West Bank beyond the barrier Israel is building in and around the territory. The army said he had been carrying a petrol bomb.
A BBC correspondent who visited Jalazun reported that local residents said the teenager was killed while walking alone on a road that passes the settlement on the way to the camp.
They said youths do sometimes throw rocks at passing cars belonging to Israeli settlers, but Abdul Qadir Zeit had never participated. They also denied that any firebombs had been thrown in recent days.
Correspondents say tension between Israeli settlers and local Palestinians have peaked in recent days, with each side complaining of violent attacks by the other.
Israel has settled about 450,000 of its citizens in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since it occupied the areas in 1967.
Settlements, which are heavily guarded by the Israeli army, are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

IOF shot and killed an elderly Palestinian in al-Yamoun village, west of Jenin. IOF troops targeted the man when he came out of his house carrying a hunting rifle, to check on a corral of sheep near his house, as he thought there may be thieves in the area. IOF could have used less force or even arrest him.
IOF also wounded another four civilians, including 2 children, in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
