Hamouda Family: Fares Hamouda, 2, step son Muhammed
In the early morning of 11 January 2009, the home of Intissar Hamouda, 41, in Tal Al-Hawa. Gaza City, came under attack from Israeli forces. Israeli tank fire resulted in the death of her son, Fares Hamouda, who was two years old at the time of the attack, and her step son Muhammed who she cared for with her husband Talat, 54, Muhammed’s father. Fares died immediately in Intissar’s arms, while Muhammed bled to death as medical crews were unable to reach them.
“Muhammed and Fares had a lot in common. After I had Fares I could not breastfeed so we had to give him manufactured milk. Muhammed lost his mother at ten months and so was also fed manufactured baby milk. As a result, both had similar illnesses with similar symptoms,” says Intissar. Throughout their brief time together the brothers remained close. “Fares would refuse to go to sleep until Muhammed came home from school. On the day of the attack Fares was sick, but he refused to take medicine from me, he wanted it from Muhammed,” says Intissar.
Following the attack Intissar was severely debilitated. “I could not walk on my legs even six months after the incident due to injuries in my legs and pelvis; I needed help from my step daughters and sisters to move around the house.” Intissar has since undergone three surgeries to remove shrapnel from her abdomen as well as reconstructive plastic surgery.
Fares was not only close to his half brother Muhammed, but also to Intissar’s step daughter Kariman and step grandchild Rania, who were 13 and 2 respectively at the time of the incident. Both have been traumatised as a result. “Kariman became extremely aggressive in school and at the advice of teachers Talat decided to withdraw her from it,” says Imtissar. “Three months following the incident I came back to the house with Rania to get her toys and other things, but she begged me not to enter the house and wouldn’t take anything from it.” Similarly, Intissar said that “ten days ago we were in the Old City shopping and Rania saw a funeral of someone killed in a recent Israeli attack, it reminded Rania of Fares and Muhammed and she started to cry, when I explained they had gone to heaven, she replied, “just like Muhammed and Fares”.”
Intissar and Talat have both been emotionally affected by the loss of their sons. “I cannot even pick up another child in my arms, I had a new grandchild, he is six months old, but I have yet to take him in my arms, I feel that place belongs to Fares,” says Talat. The anniversary is particularly hard on Intissar, who still suffers chronic pain from nerve damage as a result of the attack. “As the day approaches they show interviews taken of me after the incident or start to talk about the attack,” says Intissar, “I can’t even watch stories of other women with similar experiences, so I don’t turn on the television.”
As regards the future the couple feel they have nothing left to be taken from them. “We lost the nearest things to us, we have nothing else left to lose,” says Intissar. “I am no longer even afraid of the bombings.” However Intissar clings to some hope that she can have another child following the death of Fares, who she tried to conceive for 21 years. “I have tried through artificial insemination already, but it didn’t work. I’m hoping to try again.” Similarly Talat has hopes that there will be political reconciliation among the Palestinian political factions. Regarding the prospects of their complaint in Israeli courts, Intissar is unimpressed; “the Israeli’s committed war crimes against us, they destroy the houses over the heads of civilians, I expect no justice from them.”
11 jan 2011 PCHR submitted a criminal complaint to the Israeli authorities on behalf of the Hamouda Family on 21 July 2009. To-date, no response has been received.

Fatma Muhammad Rushdi M'aruf, 14Maha Yasser Yusef M'aruf, 15
Fatimah: Details of the last hours:
Fatimah did not know that going out of her shelter in one of the UNRWA schools in Beit Lahiya heading for her home to have a shower and bring some necessities for her and her family would put an end to her short life. While she was walking home accompanied by her cousins Maha and Haitham, an Israeli reconnaissance plane aimed its shells at their tiny bodies beheading the three young angels.
She did not even get the chance to say goodbye to her family hoping that she would meet them soon, and even after her death her mother could not print a goodbye kiss on the amorphous face of her little girl. “She asked me to go home in order to bring some clothes and blankets so that she could wrap her tiny body in them to protect her from the cold grounds of the school in this biting winter” said her mother. Fatimah promised her mother that she would not be late and headed to her home with her happy face and cheerful birdsong-like laughs, but it all faded away, hearts stopped beating and then silence prevailed.
She passed away leaving those who loved her with broken hearts, especially her young neighbors who did not stop shedding tears over her. Fatimah used to tutor them in all their school subjects. Her mother said: “Yesterday, a young girl came in asking for Fatimah’s help in solving a mathematical problem “, the young girl forgot that Fatimah is no longer able to help her, she has martyred. She knocked on the door seeking a comforting answer but instead she heard what broke her heart.
Ezdhaar, Ruwaad, Hanaan, and Zakariah are Fatimah’s siblings. They are still wondering when their sister would come back. Ruwaad realized that his beloved sister will not help him with his science or religion lessons any more. He had seen her dead body lying on the floor shrouded with deep grieve, while the rest of her siblings were waiting for her coming back.
Fatimah waited for the war to end so that she could go back to her school and finish her exams. School was interrupted by the Israel's brutal war launched on the first day of the exams. She dreamed of finishing high school and joining university then building her career as a teacher so that she would provide a better life for her poor family, but she is gone with her unfulfilled dreams.

Maha; Details of Last Hours:
After the Israeli warplanes showered the sky of Al-Amal neighborhood in Bayt Lahya in the northern of Gaza Strip with white phosphorus bombs which started to burn trees, stones, and the people there, there was a decision taken by many of the residents of that neighborhood to resort the UNRWA schools, in the hope that they might find some security there.
On the 11th of January, Maha, her brother, and her cousin returned to the house which they left two days ago to bring some of the basic needs: clothes and blankets. She came quickly from the School of Abu Hussein to her home in the neighborhood, checked the house and took what she needed. Then she had a quick eye on the house, which sheltered her during her childhood years; then she came out with her eyes full of tears.
Maha came back in a hurry with her colleagues where their families were waiting eagerly. In the middle of the road, about 50 meters far from the house, she saw her friends and began to salute them and check on their conditions and their families. Maha stood a few minutes with her friends, exchanged conversations and laughed.
Thereupon, an Israeli reconnaissance warplane launched a missile at them turning their bodies into pieces and their bodies scattered in the place.
Other Information:
Maha had distinctive qualities; she was obedient, quiet, friendly, sensitive, pretty, and brave. During wartime after her family left and her uncle Salim remained behind, he wanted someone to accompany him to school, but no one dared to go back to take him but she did.
She penetrated the agricultural land and brought him very quietly away from the sight of the tanks. When she brought him back, she smiled and raised his hands by her hand as if she had achieved a victory. On that day, the heart of her mother beat rapidly and feared a lot, but she concealed that as she did not want to spoil the smile that was on her beautiful daughter's face.
Her grandmother cried at the agony and pain of losing that late girl saying:
"Maha was the core of my heart and part of me."
Maha was not only a granddaughter but also was like a future mother, but the Israeli missiles killed her innocence. After returning home from school, Maha used to go to the house of her grandmother to meet the old lady's needs and if there is nothing to do, she would study, memorize the Qur'an, and write down her homework. When she finished her study, she used to ask the grandmother again the same question "do you want anything?" The grandmother would say in a simple tone: "Come Maha to massage my leg."
Her mother speaks about her relationship with the neighbors' children:
"Yesterday someone came to ask about Maha to explain to him a science lesson. The mother told him that she is no longer available. He did not believe me and entered to search the house for her and when he did not find her, he left crying.
"Maha used to teach him as well as many of the neighbors' children the lessons they could not understand. She used to explain to them in a nice and simple style the science, math, and religion free of charge."
Her grandmother, Um Yaser, added: "She took one of my rooms to take the children in her free hours to encourage them to study and when they answered correctly, they would receive another gift, a kiss on the cheek, and nice complement statements."
Her Dreams:
Maha wished to grow up to complete her university studies and work as a teacher of the Islamic education; she dreamt to inculcate in her students' hearts the love of faith and the good moral standards.

Amal: Details of the last hours:
When the brutal Israeli occupation army fired its cruel shells at the house of the ‘Allooshs in Jabalia, twelve-year old Amal and her family ran for their lives. In their desperate attempt to seek refuge in the next-door house from the Israeli vicious fires, the heavy Israeli indiscriminate shelling continued. As young Amal rushed to the stairs of her home trying to escape death; the first ruthless shells tore the twelve-year old Amal to shreds.
Just like dozens of innocent Palestinian children, the brutal Israeli shells robbed the twelve-year old Amal's life. Amal’s agonizing story is worth being told to the world.
A bitter, yet hearty, smile was printed on her mother’s face as she recalled the sweet memories of her little angel, ”Amal was everything a mother would wish for her daughter. She was well-mannered, obedient, and very quiet girl. She was religious and honest. I knew after she had martyred that she used to encourage her fellows to perform the due prayers and to wear hijab. She would feel shy on going to her uncle’s home to bring me something.”
Lovingly, Amal used to help her dear mother with the house work, without her mother asking. She, tenderly, cared for her young siblings. She was very generous and not demanding at all. She would not ask her parents to buy her anything more than they can afford. She used to encourage her younger siblings to perform due prayers and wear hijab.
The brutal Israeli onslaught has planted terror into the tender heart of the twelve-year old Amal. She feared for the lives of her family as well as her cousins who were working in Palestinian Security Services. She prayed to Allah: "Oh Allah, If the Israeli vicious army strikes, protect my dear family. Take only my life and protect those of my dear family.” Her mother said: "Young as my little angel was, she was extremely scared of losing a beloved person.”
The twelve-year–old, Amal, was a diligent student whom was loved by all her teachers and agreed to call her “The shy star” because she was a very shy and attentive student. She would blush whenever she stood up to answer any question of her teachers. She was such a bright student; she always scored the highest grades. One of her teachers asked her to tutor other students to help them improve their study, and be as brilliant as Amal was.
Her Dreams:
The twelve-year old, Amal, held on to dream of becoming either a geography or history teacher for she adored both subjects and obtained full marks in both. All her fellow students were fond of her; she used to help them with their study. Maha Hammoudah, Amal’s colleague, said: ”Amal was a distinguished student. She skillfully won all her colleagues’ affections as she helped them out with their study. She used to give them advice to perform due prayers and be adherent Muslims. We all are going to miss our dear friend Amal.”

Khawlah: More Details:
During the three-hour truce that the Israeli army had announced from 1 till 4 pm, Khawlah, his father, and her sisters all left the UNRWA school and headed for their home. The long-trapped family hoped for getting a bath and changing their clothes after spending so long time running for their lives. They sought refuge in the UNRWA school from the Israeli shells and missiles.
On her way home, Khawlah met her friends and stopped to talk to them for while as they exchanged strawberries and laughed a little bit; her father called upon her: "Come on! Khawlah, we do not want to be late." Unfortunately, his wards did not reach the ears of his dear daughters fast enough; a cruel Israeli missile beat these words to the girls. In a twinkling of an eye, Khawlah, her friends, and her sisters were torn to shreds.
Other Information:
Khawlah’s love for her mother can not be described through words. She could not tolerate being away from her beloved mother. Her mother narrates: "Being active in the Da`wah field, sometimes I have to go out in holidays and weekends to give seminars or lectures every now and then … My little angel would complain about it saying: "Mama, are you leaving us even in holidays?! … Please stay mother." When I could not surrender to her desire, she would insist on accompanying me so that I would not be out of her sight." With eyes full of tears and a heartrending voice fading in her crying, the grieving mother shared with us the tragedy of losing her pressure child.
Khawlah enjoyed a unique status at her home. She was the blue-eyed girl of her family and was the apple of her mother’s eye. Her loving mother used to hold her tenderly in her arms until she falls asleep.
Khawlah’s beloved sister, Sahar, was her soul mate; they were such inseparable close friends; they never hide secrets from each others. The two loving sisters used to go to their school and come back together every day. The two innocent sisters led an agony-free life, one that is full of hopes and wishes to grow up, attain success and finish their education. But the Israeli missiles robed them of their hopes leaving Saher alone grieving her dear sister; grieving the unfulfilled dreams.

Pro-Israel Rally For Attacking Gaza, NYC
(5:59) Pro-Israel Rally For Attacking Gaza, NYC, 1-11-09 1 x viewed
Pro-Israel Rally Attended by Big-Time NY Dems Descends into Calls for 'Wiping Out' Palestinians
On January 11, an estimated 10,000 people rallied in front of the Israeli consulate in midtown New York in support of Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip. The rally, which was organized by UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York in cooperation with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, featured speeches by New York’s most senior lawmakers. While the crowd was riled to righteous anger by speeches about Hamas evildoers, the event was a festive affair that began and ended with singing and joyous dancing.
Sen. Chuck Schumer highlighted Israel’s supposed humanitarian methods of warfare by pointing to its text messaging of certain Gaza Strip residents urging them to vacate their homes before Israeli forces bombed them. “What other country would do that?” Schumer shouted from the podium. Gov. David Paterson appeared on stage wearing one of the red hats distributed to demonstrators as symbols of the red alerts some residents of Israel endure when Palestinian groups fire rockets their way. Paterson cited the many Qasam rockets that have fallen on Israel as a justification for the country’s operations in Gaza, a military assault that has resulted in over 800 casualties and thousands of injuries.
Then Paterson highlighted the anti-Semitism that has followed in the wake of Israel’s attack on Gaza, highlighting the beating of a teen-age girl in France. “This kind of anger and hatred spreads like a disease,” Paterson said, “and one thing I've always pointed out is there's no place for hate in the Empire State.”
But hatred was plentiful at the rally Paterson addressed. Right in front of the stage, a man held a banner reading, “Islam Is A Death Cult.” Rally attendees described the people of Gaza to me as a “cancer,” called for Israel to “wipe them all out,” insisting, “They are forcing us to kill their children in order to defend our own children.” A young woman told me, “Those who die are suffering God’s wrath.” “They are not distinguishing between civilians and military, so why should we?” said a member of the group of messianic Orthodox Jewish Chabad-Lubavitch group that flocked to the rally.
No one I spoke to could seem to find any circumstance in which they would begin to question Israel’s war. No number of civilian deaths, no displays of extreme suffering -- nothing could deter their enthusiasm for attacking one of the most vulnerable populations in the world with the world’s most advanced weaponry. There are no limits, no matter what Israel does, no matter how it does it.
The rally made me think of a passage in “The Holocaust Is Over, We Must Rise From Its Ashes,” a powerful new book by former Israeli Knesset speaker and Jewish National Fund chairman Avraham Burg:
“If you are a bad person, a whining enemy or a strong-arm occupier, you are not my brother, even if you are circumcised, observe the Sabbath, and do mitzvahs. If your scarf covers every hair on your head for modest, you give alms and do charity, but what is under your scarf is dedicated to the sanctity of Jewish land, taking precedence over the sanctity of human life, whosever life that is, then your are not my sister. You might be my enemy. A good Arab or a righteous gentile will be a brother or sister to me. A wicked man, even of Jewish descent, is my adversary, and I would stand on the other side of the barricade and fight him to the end.”

Fadel Allah 'Imad Hassan a-Najar, 1Nasha't Raed Zaki al-Feiri, 11
RaedFadil: Details of the last hours:
After having lunch at their grandfather’s home, the one and a half-year old Fadil looked at some young children who went outdoors one by one to play, Fadil hoped that his mother would finish feeding him so that he could join them to play.
With his small, yet fast and precise steps and driven by his wish to run away from the three-day long darkness of his house to enjoy the bright afternoon light on the street, Fadil approached the young children watching the tiny glass balls, and whenever a glass ball approached him he tried to hold it but they would not let him.
So, he decided to stand still hoping to get his chance and hold one. Meanwhile, the car of a neighbor passed by them and in an instance a shell of an Israeli reconnaissance plane hit it, Fadil and his cousin Nashat dropped dead while Muntasir, Fadil’s elder brother, was injured. Fadil’s face was torn apart by an Israeli shrapnel and he bled to death.
Fadil’s mother could not find a safer place to protect her three boys and her girl from the Israeli brutal war on Gaza than her father’s. She took her husband and kids and went to her father’s home where she faced extremely difficult circumstances as they lacked food, water, and electricity. However, this suffering could not be compared to the tragedy of losing her dear baby who was totally torn apart by Israeli shrapnel that smashed his head and his beautiful face.
Fadil’s parents kept struggling after the death of their beloved baby feeling guilty that he had beaten them to martyrdom. His mother described her little baby saying:” Fadil was a very bright child; he could draw the attention of all relatives or even visitors around him so that they would play with him. We were thrilled at hearing him pronouncing some letters which he had recently learnt. We also tried to teach him how to pronounce our names, Sa‘eed was the only name Fadil was able to pronounce.”
Little Fadil or “Little sheep” as his mother used to call him because of his smooth yellow hair, has been martyred. “He was a quite blue-eyed baby”, his father says: “I can not believe that they aimed a shell at my baby’s tiny body!! His small body can not bear shrapnel … I am speechless …I can not find words to describe it … Why? What crime had my baby committed to deserve such a death? He was too young and too little to do anything … all I can say to them is that Allaah is sufficient for me, and indeed He is the best Disposer of affairs.
