Aseel Munir El-Kafarnah, 1
Aseel: Cause of death: An Israeli missile strike on the neighborhood houses crushed her house and the pieces of furniture fell on her.
Details of the last hours:
Demolishing homes and killing of families were the regular actions in Palestine since the ruthless Israeli machine has launched its 22-day offensive on Gaza. On January 17 2009, it was El-Babour and Muneer El-Kafarnah families' turn to taste the bitterness of homelessness, evacuation and even death. The Israelis aimed at El-Babour's house located in Beit Hanon turned it into ashes and crushed Muneer El-Kafarnah's house as well. In El-Kafarnah's house, Aseel, one year and forty days, was sleeping on bed like an angel when the pieces of furniture fell down on her due to the strength of the strike. In minutes, Aseel was suffocated and terribly died.
Aseel was born suffering from many health difficulties; on top of which was convulsions. Accordingly, Aseel underwent many surgeries; some of which left some marks on her lips since she has suffered a natural defect called “Balhvp Alornbep”
Aseel’s mother described how much Aseel has suffered. Unlike her older two sisters; Rolla and So`ad, who enjoyed their time playing and having fun with friends, Aseel was confined to her bed all the time since she has suffered from convulsions all the time. However, it was the most difficult time for both Aseel and her mother when the mother tried to breastfed Aseel for it took her more than one hour to get just 20ml of milk. “Every week, we took Aseel to the clinic to let the doctor check her over, perform an operation for her or she attended her massage therapy sessions. There was no hospital in Gaza but we took Aseel to. Aseel’s house was an enclosed area due to Asthma disease; the mother screened the windows with nylon to prevent dust from coming in.
Rolla and Soaad felt bitter-sorrow after their sister’s death. With her eyes full of tears, Rolla said “The Israelis killed my sister”. Rolla loved to hold her sister, Aseel, in her arms, look at her and keep asking her mother: “Mum, when will she know how to smile to me?” When Rolla went to nursery, she insisted to learn how to write Aseel’s name before her own. Now, she never stopped writing Aseel's name over and over. On the other, Soaad went with her mother to Aseel’s grave and with innocence of childhood she wanted to dig it up and restore her sister. Up till now, Soaad is still asking “why cannot we bring Aseel to life again and play together?

Fawzeyeh: Details of the last hours:
it was 2pm when Fawzia’s mother wanted to put her kids in a safe place, but unfortunately it was too late to do that as Israel started to shell her house. Two of her kids were injured and the third died.
An Israeli tank centered on top of al Kashef Mountain and fired a shell, then after moments an Apache also fired another missile. Everything was turned over. Fawzia’s mother could not be able to see her kid’s bodies because of the heavy smoke and dust which filled the place there. When the fire and dust started to fade out, the mother found two of her kids dead and the other two were in critical conditions.
Other Information:
Today Fawzia’s mother is sitting alone with her sister on the down floor of her destroyed house. Even if it was not destroyed she would not sit in a house where she lost her kids Ahmed and Fawzia. The mother said:" in the same time when I thought that I could save my kids by taking them out I lost them, there are no words to describe what happened to me. They were with me but suddenly I lost all of them…"
"Fawzia was the youngest baby; I was waiting for her impatiently to dress her jewelry and clothes, waiting for her hair to be longer so I could comb it in different styles…"
She added "I was dreaming of the day when Fawzia grows up and helps me with everything, but she is gone…"
Fawzia’s last birthday album survived the shelling, but her aunt hid it from her mother.
Fawzia's aunt said:" I had to hide the kid's pictures away from my sister, as she is crying all the time even without seeing those pictures. She is alone now and she is in a very bad condition"

Ahmad: Details of the last hours:
In Jabalia, north Gaza, loud laughs and a lot of play noise came from a small house. Their mother looked at the faces of her four innocent children, the oldest was 8. while trying to find a way to save them from the ongoing war everywhere in Gaza. She thought her sister's house, which was not far from hers, might be a safer place for her children, the pupils of her eyes.
She actually took the first step to carry out her decision. She packed their clothes but no sooner had they stepped out of their room than the Israeli tanks centered on Al-Kashef hill in Gaza pounded their room and killed two of her children. In a few minutes, the scene was the most excruciating one for the mother. The situation for the bereft mother was indescribable. She could hardly speak about her catastrophe after her son Ahmed, 5 years, and Fawzia, her only daughter, were killed. The other two children were under treatment along with their father. The aunt described the scene “my sister had exerted all her efforts to resist the plumes of smoke to find her little four children, but finally she collapsed in front of their torn bodies”
With grief the mother remembers Ahmed, the youngest of the three sons, “He was quiet and obedient. He conceded to my instructions immediately. When I asked him to keep quiet or to stop playing with his sister Fawzia, he immediately complied” Like all Gazan children, Ahmed was afraid of everything the occupation forces did. He used to stick to his mother and pull at her dress's tail in fear of her leaving him alone. “Whenever he heard the sound of missiles and rockets, Ahmed cried a lot out of fear, grabbed his sister, Fawzia, and ran to me.” the mother says.
His Dreams:
Going to kindergarten was Ahmed's dream, “I will go to the kindergarten Mum with my cousin Abdullah…I will spend all my pocket money and bring you and Fawzia sweets every day.” The mother says “his dream will never come true…All alone I keep dreaming of them day after day…see them in my dreams play and laugh, but in fact they have gone leaving me all alone; and they will never come back again.”

More Details:
On January 18, 2009, the war on Gaza Strip was over, but its aftermath on the heart of Um Haytham is still present. Her beloved little son, `Abdullah passed away…
His mother uttered some words revealing the pain of son's separation. `Abdullah asked for his mother's permission to go to play in the house yard after he had fed up of staying at home for fear of warplanes that covered the sky of the north and the south of Gaza Strip.
His mother gave him permission and he started to play in the corridor with an innocent face filled with a happy smile. They were just few minutes and the Israeli warplanes bombed An-Nusayrat club. `Abdullah trembled in fear and haste to his mother's saying: "Mummy, I am terrified." His shaking body did not feel ease but until his mother hugged him to her chest and began reciting some verses of the Qur'an, so he calmed down a little.
Again, `Abdullah returned to play with his cousins at home, but a pain in his head made him stop for few second then he lost consciousness. His mother carried him between her arms seeking to save him but with no avail. The ambulance cars could not reach the place because of the escalating bombing on the club. So, mother took a private car and went to the nearest doctor then to Al-Aqsa Hospital. There, doctors decided to take a tomogram for the head, but it does not exist except in Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The mother said after tears flowed down her cheeks: "I had no other option because of the bombard. I took him to the hospital and the diagnostic X-ray was an explosion in the arteries of the brain resulted in internal bleeding and he was referred to the European Hospital. The doctors there gave him only 72 hours to get better, but he did not and remained in a coma again. He was transferred to Egypt, but he stayed two days in a clinical death then passed away in the third day."

`Abdullah was the youngest child of Um Haytham. He was clever, handsome, funny, and of sweet-talk. "He used to ask about everything, never felt ashamed of something, and does not fear any stranger." Beloved by all and loves to rely on himself, his mother continued saying: "He was the most beloved child to me because of his extreme beauty and sense of humor."
`Abdullah excelled in his study in the first primary grade. He was very active, keen to study his lessons, and memorized the songs of his Arabic language book. He prepared for the final exams of the first semester, but the war deprived him of examinations.
By the end of the war, he could not take the tests and left his seat empty to tell the painful details of his death.
His Hobbies and Dreams:
`Abdullah loved sport, especially the football game and few minutes before his death he was playing football. He dreamt to finish his studies and graduate from the University as an architect to build houses and pave roads. He always asked how those lofty buildings stand!
However, when he figured out its formation, he wanted to be an engineer to build more of them, but he could not build anything.
Gaza Strip has become a pile of rubble waiting for the re-construction but `Abdullah will not be one of them.

Jihan: Date of Injury: Jan.12, 2009. Date of Death: Jan. 18, 2009
More Details:
The war on Gaza was accompanied with a blockade on Gaza residents. As the days of war were passing, the residents were out of gas needed for cooking. Israel was closing all the crossing points, allowing few amounts of gas to be available for the Gazans. Gaza residents were forced to use alternatives for cooking like fire and kerosene.
Jihan Elhelw’s family was one of these families who was out of gas and was pushed to use the kerosene streamer. In the morning of January 12th, Jihan’s mother ‘Om Jihad’ was inflaming the streamer to prepare food for her children. Jihan was sitting close to her, helping her in the kitchen. At that moment, an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft attacked the house area with a number of missiles. A fragment of these missiles hit the kerosene streamer; it blasted causing terrible burns in Jihan’s limbs since she was very close to the kerosene streamer.
Jihan was carried to the hospital immediately. Throughout the first three days, her condition was stable, but on the fourth day, she deteriorated to the extent that the doctors decided to make an operation. The percentage of blood started to decrease rapidly, accompanied with a big increase in her temperature and severe infections all over her breast. The surgery was done, but her condition was getting worser. Jihan passed away on the 18th of January after suffering for six days in the intensive care.
The doctors announced that Jihan died due to blood poisoning caused by the deep burns in her body in addition to severe infections in her chest as a result of breathing in so much fire smoke.
Jihan passed away, leaving her room empty with the exception of some poems that she wrote on the door of her room.
Her mother describes her relationship with her daughter with a crying voice: “She was like a friend to me. I was her secrets’ keeper. Whenever she felt depressed, she came and told me about everything bothering her. I was always giving her advices, guiding her to the right direction…"
Jihan was always obedient to her mother. She often took the responsibility of the house duties, having mercy upon her beloved mother, who is suffering from Osteomalacia, bones’ fragility, which prevents her from doing home chores.
Her Dreams:
Jihan was a tender child, was very superior in different fields. Academically, she was an outstanding student at school. Religiously, she was always keen to pray in the nearest mosque to her house, where she learned the Holy Qur'an.
She loved poems so much, wrote some, and memorized many of the great poems of the famous late poet Mahmoud Darwish. She had a dream to be like Darwish one day. She also dreamed to finish her school to be a professional journalist writing about her people’s sorrows; expressing their hopes and pains.
But she went before all these dreams came true, neither her dreams nor her people’s dreams.
