Sahar: Details of the last hours:
After having lunch and enjoying her favorite soup, the sixteen-year-old Saher went to clean the balcony at her mother’s request. The dutiful daughter started cleaning the balcony. Her mother admired her diligent work, supplicated Allah for her to win His Contentment, and then left her to finish cleaning. Everything was quite normal in spite of the growing tension that could be felt in the air as a result of the vicious Israeli onslaught on Gaza. On 15th of January, at 4:30 p.m., occupation forces viciously fired its missiles at a house located between the Asleem’s houses as they were targeting Hamas leader Sa`id Siyam. The crowded district was heavily targeted with a number of Israeli F-16 missiles; dozens were dead while others were injured, and numerous homes were wrecked. Saher, her sister-in-law, and four of her cousins were dead.
The broken-hearted mother narrated the terrible story of losing her daughter saying: "I was sitting with my kids when I heard the sound of a jet fighter. In a twinkling of an eye, I found myself on the street without my veil, running all over the place trying to find my kids. I could not realize what has happened and I could not see anything because of the thick dust that shrouded the place. Then the ambulance cars rushed to the stricken area and my children started going out of the house, or the rest of it. I stood there trying to figure out what has happen but with no use. It was truly devastating. Allah is sufficient for us, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."
After all her other children were married, Saher was the only one left unmarried. For her fortune, she enjoyed her parents' undivided love and attention. The grieved mother said: "Saher was not only my daughter, but she was my best friend, my soul, and my whole life as well. She was the one whom I entrusted with all my secrets. She used to understand me just with a glance. She knew when I was happy, upset, or tired.
Saher was extremely shy; she even was shy to sit down and eat with her brother and his wife. My little angel dearly loved children; she was like a mother to them. She used to buy them candies out of her own allowance; she used to say to her father: "Dad, I need a bigger allowance today because Talaa, Sarah, Aseel and Lana, her nephews are coming over. Alas, those Israeli criminals have deprived us of our precious little girl."
Aseel, her brother's daughter, remembers her loving aunt: "Aunt Saher is now in Paradise. O, I miss her so much; she used to buy me candy all the time." Saher had a charming sweet voice, therefore, she used to sing all the time. She was devastated on hearing of the death of the Palestine Islamic Singer, Suhayb `Abdul-`Al. She was even more severely touched upon hearing the death of young children who were killed by the vicious Israeli indiscriminate fires, as her sister-in-law says." She added: "It was really hurting to see the Medics pulling my beloved Saher’s body out of the rubble. I remembered how it was difficult for me to see such scenes. Now, she had joined those whom she felt terribly sorry for their death."
Like any 17-year-old girl, Saher was counting days to her birthday, but unfortunately, the cruel Israeli fires robbed her out of her short yet precious life just two days before her birthday.

Mo'men Mahmoud Talal E'elaw, 11Mohammed Tayseer Mohammed Zomlot 11
Mo'men: Details of the last hours:
At first glance, Gaza seemed to be a dead city, but deep inside, there were still life and hopes of survival that refused to fade away. Although a curtain of darkness fell on Gaza since it had run out of oil and scenes of destruction and ruins were everywhere, the eyes cannot fail to recognize those children who escaped their fears by playing football on the roofs of their homes. The Gazan women and kids got out to breathe clean air without the smell of death.
One of those women was Mo'men's mother who went upstairs to the roof to investigate whether it was safe to get outside or not. Mo'men's mother was pregnant, therefore, Mo'men and his brothers were worried about her. So, they followed her up to help in case she needed to carry something heavy. The mother asked her children to go back inside for fear of the Israeli missiles, but in vain. After some minutes of silence, Mo'men's sister called him from downstairs, but Mo'men refused to leave his mother saying: "We promised each other either to live or die together."
The mother's face can tell the whole story with her silent but expressive sad features. She remembered how much her dear son, Mo'men, nagged to ride his bicycle for a while. Finally, with a tender smile, the mother allowed him to ride his bicycle. No sooner had Mo'men extended his hand towards his bicycle, an Israeli missile was launched at Mo'men's home, ripping off his body and the shrapnel injured his sister, Eman, and his brother. Although the mother was a few meters away from the stricken area, Only she and her embryo survived watching her children die before her eyes.
Mo'men's name reflects many of his characteristics. The word Mo'men means "faithful" and he truly was. He memorized 6 parts of the Noble Qur'an and was a good example of ethics and good manners. The mother said: "He had scored high degrees at schooling, loved by his colleagues and was chosen as the school basketball team leader."
In a flashback, the mother narrated that Mo'men used to organize his time perfectly. He paid more attention to his studies and was so ambitious to have A mark in all school subjects. At the same time, he used to go to Mosques to memorize the Noble Qur'an and learn how to recite it perfectly. All these merits did not prevent him from leading a normal social life with his family, friends and neighbors;. He played and enjoyed his time for hours and always had time for practicing sports like football and Karate.
Mo'men's Dream:
Mo'men's dream was to become a doctor. He impatiently waited to finish his high studies to be able to treat people's wounds. Mo'men's older sister was kidding with him saying: "You should specialize in Gynecology and Obstetrics in a reference to the fact that Palestinian women never stop giving birth, so he can earn a lot amount of money." With a shy smile and a sincere wish from his innocent heart, Mo'men used to reply "With Allah's willing".
Although Mo'men's died, his dream will be alive in the heart of his mother. The mother insisted to revive Mo`men's dream, so, she decided to name her new baby after Mo'men and to exert her utmost efforts to help him be a doctor as her deceased beloved, Mo'men, ever wished.

Diab 'Abd al-Qader Rajab Muqat, 46
al-Nadeem family father died after 9 months of intensive medical treatment[/b]
“Naser used to help the children with their school work, especially English and mathematics. Now that is my duty. Nothing can compensate me for the loss of my husband. He was always very tender, understanding and calm.”
On 15 January 2009, shortly after 7:00, the Israeli army fired a tank shell and live ammunition at Naser al-Nadeem and his two sons,
Bashar (17) and Firas (15), who were fleeing their home in the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood of Gaza City. The two boys sustained moderate injuries while their father was severely injured. After 9 months of intensive medical treatment in Egypt and Gaza,
Naser al-Nadeem eventually succumbed to his wounds. He was 44.
Naser’s wife, Majda al-Nadeem (54), is now a single parent of three sons,
Mohanned (nineteen), Bashar (17), Firas (15), and two daughters, Dima (14) and Tala (9).
“What keeps me going are my children, my children only. I am originally from Damascus and met their father when he was studying there. We married in 1990 and I moved to Gaza with him. I always think to return to Damascus to go and live with my family, but I know that it is better for my children to be here in Gaza. This is their home. I am doing whatever I can to protect them,” says Majda as she smiles at her sons.
All the responsibilities of the household are now on Majda’s shoulders, both with respect to caring for the children and financially. “Naser used to help the children with their school work, especially English and mathematics. Now that is my duty. Nothing can compensate me for the loss of my husband. He was always very tender, understanding and calm.”
Majda explains how she struggles to provide for the most basic needs since Naser died. “My husband used to have an engineering company with a partner and we used to have a good life. Now everything has changed. I am always thinking of how I can provide for my children; how will I bring food, pay for school, electricity, water, everything?
Then 13 year old Firas
I have a lot of pressure on me and it affects me psychologically. We received some payments from the Palestinian Engineers Union and charity organizations but it is not enough or infinite. My family in Syria also tries to help us out financially. They sent us money to repair our house after the war.
The bathroom, kitchen, and sewerage were destroyed and there were smoke marks everywhere. Over the past three years our financial situation has gotten worse. A few days ago our electricity was cut off because we cannot pay for the bill.”
The children have difficulties in comprehending the changed financial situation. Majda says: “they want to have what the other children have, but I cannot provide it. They also had to leave their [private] school and change to a public school. It has been very difficult for them to adapt to these changes. They are not convinced that I cannot provide them with everything they want.”
The physical injuries Bashar and Firas sustained in the attack still mark their daily lives. Firas’ right knee was shattered by a bullet. His right leg is shorter as a result and does not bend. Majda explains:
“last year doctors placed platinum inside his knee. Now Firas has to wait until he is an adult. Then doctors will check what another surgery can do. But they also said it will never become the way it used to be.” Firas says: “I used to play karate with Bashar but I can’t do that anymore. I can’t really run either. Now I play ping pong.”
Bashar had shrapnel wounds in his left leg and right arm, and back. His leg is deformed and sometimes he has pain caused by infections and muscle damage. “Bashar is a very sporting boy. He used to do karate but he changed to gymnastics because of his injuries. Despite his injury, he insists on continuing his sports activities,” says his mother.
Bashar then 15, injury by large bullet from tank
Because of their injuries Bashar and Firas were not able to go back to school until the following semester. Majda called the Ministry of Education and told them that they had to provide the boys with home schooling; “teachers came to teach mathematics, Arabic and English at home, and the boys managed to end their school year with success.”
Despite their optimistic and brave outlook on life, Majda and her children carry with them the psychological scars of the offensive. “The war did change my children. It was a very difficult experience, even for us as adults,” she says. “When we hear explosions we feel fear and remember the war and the attack. If I am afraid, then how must my children be feeling?
In the year after his father was killed, Firas would wake up at night and scream ‘I want my father’. Now he is older and understands that his father will never come back. The school performances of Bashar and Firas have been affected too. It is getting better, but nothing is as it was before the war. Firas is also held back by his medical treatment.”
“We are in need of psychological support,” says Majda. “But the people working in this field only visited us for their own interests; taking photos and videos, for the benefit of their organization only.” Bashar adds: “once, a psychological worker came to talk with me but I couldn’t stay with her.
She was the one who needed help. I told her that and then left the room.” Majda says: “the only organization I really respect is MSF. The day after the children returned home from the hospital they visited us and kept coming to our house for one year, until the wounds of my children were healed.”
When speaking about her outlook on the future, Majda says “I don’t have a clear picture of what it will be like. What I am sure about is that I cannot guarantee a nice future for my children. But I am trying to teach my children that education is very important for their future and convince them to do well in school.”
Majda is uncertain whether the attack on her family will result in justice in an Israeli court. “They targeted my husband and children, civilians. I am not sure if there will be any result in a court. If there will be any results, they will just make financial compensation and not bring my husband back to life,” she says.
PCHR submitted a criminal complaint to the Israeli authorities on behalf of the al-Nadeem family on 23 June 2009. To-date, no response has been received.
