Islamic Jihad ready for all-out war with Israel
By Crispian Balmer and Nidal al-Mughrabi
GAZA CITY (Reuters) -- Islamic Jihad, which traded deadly fire with Israel at the weekend in Gaza, does not expect a subsequent truce to last long and has at least 8,000 fighters ready for war, a spokesman said.
Islamic Jihad is the second largest armed group in Gaza, after Hamas, which rules the tiny Mediterranean enclave. Both are classified as terrorist groups by most Western governments.
However, while Hamas has recently spent much of its energy on the business of government, Islamic Jihad has kept its focus firmly on the resistance, gaining in prominence and enjoying significant backing from Muslim supporters, including Iran.
"We are proud and honored to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran gives us support and help," Abu Ahmed, the spokesman for Islamic Jihad's armed wing, the al-Quds Brigades, said in a rare, long interview.
He denied widespread reports that Iran had provided his group with arms and smiled at suggestions it now receives more sophisticated weaponry from Tehran than Hamas. He also declined to comment on rumors that the brigades were trained by Iran.
"What I will say is that we have every right to turn to every source of power for help," said the burly, bearded Abu Ahmed, occasionally flicking a string of yellow prayer beads.
Islamic Jihad's latest confrontation with Israel left 12 Palestinian gunmen and one Israeli civilian dead. The fighting ended only after neighboring Egypt brokered a ceasefire with both parties, but Abu Ahmed did not see it lasting long.
"Theoretically the calm has been restored, but in practice it hasn't really," he said. Israel, he said, is itching for a fight in Gaza following last month's prisoner-swap accord, in which Israel released 477 prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held in Gaza since 2006.
Israel says it attacks only in self-defense.
Trading blows
It killed five senior Islamic Jihad militants on Saturday in retaliation for a rocket attack two days earlier that it blamed on the group. That rocket caused no casualties, but landed deep enough into Israel to set off sirens on Tel Aviv's outskirts.
Abu Ahmed denied responsibility for the missile, saying this was how Israel had managed to find five top fighters together in the open -- because they had not expected to be targeted.
But the al-Quds Brigades soon hit back, firing numerous rockets into southern Israel, piercing the country's defensive missile shield. One Israeli man died, at least four others were injured, while cars and a building were also set ablaze.
The group posted a video online showing a missile-launcher on the back of a truck firing a salvo of rockets. It was the first time the group has claimed to have such firepower, although there was no independent confirmation of its use.
"The al-Quds Brigades really surprised Israel, forcing them to rethink their assessment of us ... I don't think they realized we had that weaponry," said Abu Ahmed, indicating the vehicle was immediately hidden underground after the attack.
Al-Quds Brigades cells are dotted around Gaza and Abu Ahmed said there was huge demand from youngsters to join.
"We take some, but can't accept everyone ... It is a question of quality, not quantity," he said, giving for the first time an estimate of the strength of the force. "We have at least 8,000 fighters, who are fully equipped."
The group got a boost to its standing in August when the new rulers in Egypt started dealing with it directly over truces, rather than through Hamas. Abu Ahmed said Hamas was not involved in the latest fighting and that all the talking was with Egypt.
He played down reports of tensions with Hamas, which since Israel's military offensive in Gaza in late 2008 has appeared reluctant to go head-to-head with Israel.
"Certainly in terms of ideology, there is no difference between Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. The difference is in the methodology," Abu Ahmed said, adding that Hamas's governmental role meant that it was "more vulnerable to outside pressure".
He said Islamic Jihad's biggest problem was the Israeli armed drones that regularly buzz over Gaza seeking out militants. "Warfare has changed. You can't just hide a gun in your jacket like you could in the 1980s," he said, adding that the Jihadist fighters were not afraid of sudden death.
"It is a good feeling to be under drone attack. When we chose the path of resistance, we opted either for martyrdom or victory. Martyrdom is the more desirable."

A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council on Friday. No injuries or damage were reported.
The Color Red alert sounded around 9 pm in Hof Ashkelon Regional Council communities and in southern Ashkelon.
The rocket hit Israel after nearly three days of quiet in the south. On Tuesday a rocket exploded in the Eshkol Regional Council.
The fragile ceasefire with Gaza's militant groups was previously breached last week, as several rockets were fired at Israel following a relatively calm morning.
The Iron Dome defense system intercepted at least one Grad rocket fired at Beersheba. Shortly afterwards, a rocket was fired at the city of Sderot. Residents of the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council reported hearing an explosion within the council's limit.
No injuries or damages were reported and security forces are canvassing the area for the projectiles.

Islamic Jihad: All options are open before the resistance to retaliate
GAZA, (PIC)-- Daud Shehab, Islamic Jihad spokesman in Palestine, said that the options before the resistance for a reply to the occupation's crime on the eve of Eid are open.
In a statement to the PIC on Saturday evening he said: “The Israeli occupation breached the lull which all resistance factions agreed to,” stressing that the resistance factions should agree on a united stand towards this crime.
The spokesman warned of the consequences of this Israeli escalation which took place on the eve of Eid al-Adha, saying that the occupation wants to lay the basis for killing based on intention and wants to be able to breach the agreed lull whenever and however it wants, this cannot be accepted by the resistance.
He said that his movement is committed to all Palestinians regardless of their affiliation and that it makes no sense that the occupation forces kill Palestinian people and the resistance does not retaliate. He added that the occupation does not give any attention to any of the Palestinian or Muslim festivities.
He further said that his movement have passed a message to the Egyptian side, which brokered the latest lull between the Israeli occupation and Palestinian resistance factions, about the Israeli breaches and that the resistance’s options of how to retaliate are open.
For its part, the Quds Brigades warned on Saturday evening that it will retaliate to the killing of one of its fighter in an airstrike east of Khan Younis.
The Brigades said they will choose the time and place for their retaliation, stressing that they will not remain arms folded in the face of occupation continuous crimes against the Palestinian people.

Qasem Occupation does not want a lull in Gaza, denies being part of it
NABLUS, (PIC)-- Professor Abedl Sattar Qasem, lecture in political science at al-Najah University in Nablus, said that the Israeli occupation does not want a lull with the Palestinians and does not admit to being a party to any such agreements with the Palestinian resistance.
In a statement to PIC on Saturday evening, Qasem renewed his call for the Palestinian resistance to set up a joint military council to repel the continued Zionist attack, saying: “It makes no sense that every Palestinian works on his own"
He added: “The lull should be decided from one side, the Palestinian side. The Palestinian resistance is the party who should assess the situation and not the Zionist occupation. The resistance should have the last word in this regard.”
Commenting in the death of a resistance fighter on the eve of Eid al-Adha, he said that the Palestinian resistance to take more care and develop security procedures, adding that those are still not enough despite the military development of the resistance.
He went on to say: “Occupation does not take into account any occasions for Palestinians or Muslims, and all it cares about is its security assessment which supersedes all other considerations.”

Qassam lands near kindergarten in Negev
Two Qassam rockets fired from the Gaza Strip on Tuesday exploded in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council.
One of the rockets hit a warehouse near a kindergarten and another exploded in an open area outside the council. No injuries were reported.
The Color Red alarm sounded in the region and sappers were called in to dismantle the rockets.
Dudi, a father whose son attends the kindergarten, estimated there were only seven seconds between the alarm and the explosion.
"The rocket hit the outer wall," he recounted. "It's very frightening for a father who has a child in kindergarten, despite the fact that they are fortified. Some two hours before the hit the kids left the kindergarten, and some of them play in an adjacent playground. If, God forbid, the rocket would have landed then there would have been chaos. "
As it turned out, a few teenagers were playing outside when the rocket landed. They ran for cover in a nearby fortified area and were miraculously spared injury.
On Sunday, a Qassam exploded in Shaar Hanegev but caused no injuries. The Air Force, in response, bombed a building in the northern Gaza Strip. One Palestinian was killed and four were injured.
On Tuesday, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz addressed the Knesset's Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee and said that Israel will have to initiate an operation in Gaza soon. "We cannot tolerate repeated cycles of violence in Gaza. The move must be well-planned," he said.

2) The first mention of 6.8 million US dollars a day in aid to israel I initially said a 6.8 Million $ a year. I rectified that the second time it was mentioned.
3) Researching the Peanut Allergy I found surprisingly that because Israel feeds their young peanuts and peanut allergies have in fact the worlds LOWEST casulty rate.
4) The research statistics I was quoting were actually from SESAME ALLERGY REACTIONS within Israel..Which runs from 150-200 per year.
5) Maybe I was a tad bit terse with her.... To those that think I am a bit "too harsh" with these telephone operators I say this: If you were around in 1938 and you saw people around you believing the lies, would you be silent? Would you be harsh with those who were being misled? Would you try and point it out to others.?
I have been commented to by a couple of people from my last few calls that I am being a bit rough on the small fry and need to focus more on the bigger fish. Confronting the CEO's..However these people never listen,,, They are always the first to hang up. Some secretaries have nothing better to do than to that and debate finer points and if I can make just ONE PERSON stop and think, then this will all well worth it.
That one awoken person can potentially release others from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds. Well all have it within ourselves to potentially impact on millions by our positive actions and words and intentions. I admit my methods are tough. I admit my words are harsh, I admit I get emotional sometimes when I think of the more brutal images of what I have seen in GAZA, its horrendous snd I have really seen of of that already.
What real human being cannot feel shame and sorrow for Israeli actions lately.. Its reprehensible to an Extreme degree.. Any normal human being would be touched by whats going on. However if my harsh words have made this one telephone operator stop and think for just a few minutes in her life about what she is doing and thinking and saying OR EVEN SUPPORTING ... Then my mission has been accomplished.
NO REAL CHRISTIAN would support the killing of human beings. Think about her words in this telephone call. SHE IS NOT A REAL RELIGIOUS BASED CHRISTIAN.

The tale of the targeted killing
Op-ed: Operational strategy vis-à-vis Gaza doesn’t work and is unfair, immoral; there must be another way.
A nation is waiting, waiting with bated breath to receive an unequivocal miracle – that of the targeted killing. Like the deus ex machina of the Greek theater, that higher power which is independent of time, space and circumstance; like an axiom – an absolute proposition that needs no proof or explanation; like a celestial element, free of rationale or, heaven forbid, morals, which seems to wreak security and political havoc, but in fact introduces order to a chaotic world. The targeted killing is here again.
Reality as we know it is so convenient. The language is familiar: The “target” is always a “senior member of a military wing.” They have many senior members – apparently it's an army of generals. He is always taken out moments before launching a terror attack (“a ticking bomb”) or moments afterwards (“retaliation”). It always follows an “imminent threat” and an “operational opportunity,” and the consequences be damned.
There is no resisting the temptation of the “targeted killing,” even if the target's focus is a little murky. A “surgical strike” may be executed at the heart of a residential area or on a school's doorstep, and we'll leave the innocent casualties to the surgeons at the Shifa Hospital. Just as long as the IDF “settles the score,” as if this was a dusty noontime western and not the defense force of a sovereign state, which is supposed to consider the overall interests of its citizens.
Ambiguous routine
“High alert in the southern communities” will follow: A million Israeli citizens, who are just as important as those living in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, will be called to stay near “bunkers” and “secure areas.” “Qassams” and “Grads” will follow next, landing in “open areas” for the most part or somewhere within the “Sha'ar Henegev Regional Council limits.” The Military Censor trumps everything – one mustn't help the terrorists with their aim. And the tangible price of the sacred assassination becomes more and more ambiguous along the way.
The defense establishment will declare the fire a “breach of the understandings,” the media will quickly report that “the terror is back” and a “strike” will scramble along. First, a drone will hum, an aerial strike of “terror hubs” or “training facilities” will follow; babies and their parents from the building next door will be rushed to nearby hospitals or cemeteries, and the IDF will “regret” that innocent people were hurt, but will stress that “Hamas is responsible.”
Anyone who dares question the political, strategic, tactical, operational or moral logic of the events will immediately be labeled as a “leftist,” and mostly as a pest. Silence – there's shooting in progress. Meanwhile, another “escalation” will be brewing: More rockets, more strikes, more targets and more victims. Eventually, with Egyptian “mediation”, a “lull” will be achieved. Until the next round.
Where does this cycle of blood draw its strength from? How has an entire nation, the descendants of the wisest people in history, become subjected to its bizarre rules and language? How could it have miraculously hypnotized Israelis, while simultaneously imposing mind-numbing paralysis on their common sense?
And the most important question of all: When will someone in the chain of command – an operations NCO, or a pilot, or a squadron commander, or the Air Force commander, or the IDF chief, or a minister without portfolio, or a defense minister, or the prime minister, ever get up and say – either whisper or shout: “Enough.”
We've been here before. It doesn’t work. It's not beneficial. It's immoral and unfair – to the children and parents in Gaza and to the children and parents in the Gaza vicinity communities. There has to be another way.
