Beit Ummar farmers barred from lands
HEBRON (Ma’an) -- Beit Ummar residents said Saturday that a protest demanding access to lands was quashed, and harassment from the Israeli military has continued throughout the week, as construction of a fence around part of the town was completed.
The town, adjacent to the illegal Israeli-only settlement of Karmi Zur, stages weekly protests against the land confiscation, and has been a recent flashpoint with teenagers throwing stones at frequent military patrols.
There has also been an increase in overnight detention campaigns by Israeli forces.
Tear-gas canisters were launched at the residents, who marched from the city center toward the confiscated lands, with a local spokesman saying the hot canisters set fire to agricultural lands belonging to Ahmad Saleh Abu Ayyash and Hashem Fawzi Abu Ayyash.
Local coordinator Yousef Abu Maria said a Swedish and an Israeli activist both suffered tear-gas inhalation, while Yatta residents and anti-confiscation rally supporters Rateb Yousef lA-Jbur and his son Luay were both beaten by soldiers during the protest.

Dozens injured in violent crackdown on protests in Iraq Borin
NABLUS, (PIC)-- Dozens suffered breathing difficulties after Israeli occupation forces cracked down Saturday on continued marches in Iraq Burin west of Nablus in the northern West Bank.
The soldiers used rubber bullets and tear gas also injuring a 25-year-old Palestinian man in the hand. He was later treated at the local hospital.
The IOF has declared the village a closed military zone and has blocked the entry of supporters, who arrive regularly to take part in weekly rallies condemning Jewish settlement activity and the confiscation of Palestinian land.
Meanwhile, IOF soldiers attacked a group of supporters who arrived to aid Palestinian farmers in Beit Ummar north of Al-Khalil in southern West Bank, locals reported.
Foreign supporters and farmers gathered at farmland threatened to be seized by Jewish settlers.
The sources said the soldiers used their fists as they delved into clashes with the protesters and tried to arrest a thirteen-year-old boy at the location and eventually evacuated the area.

Israeli investigators assault minor in bid to elicit confession
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Israeli investigators in Etzion interrogation center severely assaulted a 16-year-old Palestinian boy from Hussam near Bethlehem in order to elicit a confession, the Palestinian Prisoner Society has reported.
The boy, Osama Mahmoud Shousha, was beaten for forty minutes and then transferred to an investigation room where he was charged with throwing stones, PPS’s lawyer said.
In an attempt to elicit a confession, the investigator threw Shousha on the ground while he was bound and blindfolded and placed his foot on his neck and then turned him upside down. He was also beaten on the head several times causing him to lose consciousness on separate occasions.
The PPS said the Etzion interrogation and detention center has turned into a “slaughterhouse”, according to the torture endured by detainees during interrogations there. It said that the Israeli prison authority has recently escalated the abuse of prisoners, including humiliating searches and excessive punitive measures.

Israelis shoot up protesters’ bulldozer at Bil’in wall– as Fayyad participates in demo
From Jonathan Pollak of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee in Bil'in:
Hundreds of protesters led by a bulldozer marched on the Wall in Bil'in today after the Israeli army began dismantling it earlier this week.
Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and Israeli member of Knesset Mohammed Barakah participated in the demonstration. Israeli soldiers open fire at a Palestinian protester driving a bulldozer at the site of the Wall in Bil'in today, shattering one of the vehicle's windows and pancturing two of its tires.
At the time of the shooting, the bulldozer was dismantling the gate in the section of the Wall that is being relocated by the army these days.
The 500 protesters, among them Fayyad and Israeli MK Barakah, marched from the village's mosque towards the Wall. On arrival to the gate, and as the bulldozer advanced at the gate, the protesters were attacked with rubber-coated bullets, tear-gas and foul-smelling water shot by a water-cannon. Two people were lightly injured.
At a demonstration in the village of Nabi Saleh, also today, the army attacked a group of children dressed as clown who were running kites inside the village. In Deir Qaddis, the Nili settlement's security guard shot live fire at protesters who flew the Palestinian flag from one of the houses being built in the new neighborhood of the settlement.
Background: The Bil'in Popular Committee declared today as the last day of the old path of the Barrier on village's lands, and the beginning of the struggle against the new path. On Tuesday morning this week, army bulldozers began work to dismantle the Wall in Bil'in. As early as 2007, after two years of weekly protests in the village and following a petition filed by the residents, Israeli high court declared the path of the Barrier illegal.
The court ruled that the route was not devised according to security standards, but rather for the purpose of settlement expansion. Despite the high court's ruling four more years of struggle had to elapse for the army to begin dismantlement.
During these years two people were killed in the course of the weekly protests and many others injured. Yet even according to the new path, sanctioned by the high court, 435 acres of village land will remain on the "Israeli" side of the Barrier. On September 4th, 2007, the high court ordered the state to come up with an alternative path for the existing Barrier in Bil'in within a reasonable period of time. Despite the ruling, many months elapsed and no new plan was offered.
On the May 29th, 2008, the residents of Bil'in filed a petition to hold the state in contempt of the court due to this delay. In response to the petition, the state offered an alternative path. However, the plan failed to comply with the high court's ruling as the proffered path left a large area designed for settlement expansion on the "Israeli" side of the Barrier. The only difference between the two paths being that the latter offered to award 40 acres of land back to the residents. A second petition claiming the alternative path not in accordance with court ruling was then filed.
On August 3rd, 2008, the court declared that the first alternative path indeed fails to adhere to the ruling. The court ordered the state to come up with another alternative path. On September 16th, 2008, the state offered a second alternative path. This path also left a large area designed for settlement expansion on the "Israeli" side, offering to return a100 acres of village land to the residents. A lawyer for the residents asked that the state be held in contempt of the court for violating a court ruling for the second time. On December 15th, 2008, the high court ruled that the second alternative path was not in accordance with the original court ruling.
In April 2009 the state offered a third alternative path which left most of the area destined for settlement expansion on the "Palestian" side of the Barrier, thereby returning to the village 150 acres of 490 acres annexed by the original path.

Seven Injured by Troops Gunfire as Bil’in Celebrate the Removal of the Old Wall
Ghassan Bannoura/PNN Exclusive – Seven people were injured on Friday as Bil’in villagers in central West Bank celebrated the removal of the old Israeli wall built on their lands.
Residents of Bil’in started to organize a weekly nonviolent protest against the Israeli wall six and half years ago. In September 2007 the villagers continued protesting; and the legal proceedings managed to get to the Israeli Supreme Court of Justice, to order a halt to the wall construction. The court ruled for a re-routing of the section of wall built on Bil'in's land. Due to the ruling, the villagers got back 275 of the 600 acres Israel took for the wall and the nearby settlement of Modi’in Illit. In 2004 the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled the Israeli wall illegal.
In February of last year and after two years of stalling the Israeli army began rerouting the wall by constructing a new one. This week the new wall was finished and army bulldozers started to remove the old one away; a scene that Bil’in villagers are not accustomed to.
“Today we celebrate,” Explained Rateb Abu Rahmah , the media coordinator of the Popular Committee Against the Wall and settlement “it’s a victory for our popular resistance; this was accomplished by hard six years and half of resistance.”
Today like every Friday the protest started after the midday prayers, in addition to Israeli and international supporters who joined the struggle of Bil’in since it started; Palestinian PM Salam Fayyad and Arab MK Mohamed Baraka joined today’s protest.
Every week an Israeli army unit stops the villagers from going through the gate of the wall by firing tear gas canisters, causing dozens to suffer gas inhalation. Today seven were injured as they were hit in the arms and legs by gas bombs fired by troops. The army used live rounds and chemical water known to local as “Skunk” for the bad smell it produces.
“We will continue the struggle, we still live under occupation and we still have land trapped behind the wall and the settlement is built on.” Says Abu Rahmah.
Even with the peaceful nature of the Bil’in protests the army faced it with violence; leading to death. In January 2010 Jawaher Abu Rahmah was killed due to severe tear gas inhalation. Her brother Bassem was killed as well when an Israel soldier shot him in the chest with a tear gas bomb in April of 2009. Locals estimate that 1400 people were injured by the army fire in Bil’in protests since they started and as many as 140 people arrested.
Villages all over the West Bank followed Bil'in's steps in conducting weekly protests against the Israeli built wall on their lands.

Israeli troops attack anti-wall protesters
Israeli troops have fired tear gas at Palestinian demonstrators protesting against Tel Aviv's separation barrier in the occupied West Bank.
The violence in the West Bank village of Bilin came after a group of Palestinians managed to remove parts of the illegal Israeli fence, which cuts villagers off from vast stretches of their land and separates the West bank from the rest of the occupied territories.
Palestinians view the fence as an "apartheid wall."
Bilin has been the scene of weekly protests against Israel's controversial separation barrier for years, but this week's demonstrations came with celebrations after the Israeli army finally bowed to a court order and began to tear down parts of the fence to re-route it.
Hundreds of Palestinians, including a number of leaders and activists, attended the protest rally to celebrate the achievement. Palestinians say anti-wall protests will continue because much of their land still remains inaccessible.
The Israeli military tore down a watchtower overlooking Bilin on Wednesday and said they were ready to dismantle part of the fence, four years after the high court ruled it should be repositioned to give Palestinians access to farmland.
"What the village of Bilin has got back because of the changing of the course of the wall represents less than half of the lands that were confiscated,” Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Feyadh told Reuters.
Tel Aviv began constructing the West Bank separation wall in 2000. The International Court of Justice says the wall is illegal and should be taken down.

Silwan: 1 arrested after hit by Israeli jeep
JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces detained a young Palestinian from Silwan after hitting him with a military Jeep.
Local witnesses said the Israeli military detained Ali Sabri Abu Diab, 15, from Silwan, for unknown reasons.
Israeli forces also raided a solidarity sit-in tent in Silwan after Friday afternoon prayers which lead to confrontations between the police and citizens, locals said.
No Israeli spokesperson was available for comment.
The tent is part of the popular struggle against house demolitions and forced displacement in East Jerusalem.
Silwan is a frequent flashpoint for confrontations due to the presence of Israeli settlers who have displaced Palestinian Jerusalemites from their homes.
East Jerusalem has been occupied by Israel since 1967.

Witnesses: Israeli fire torches Nabi Saleh olive trees
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli troops fired tear gas in An-Nabi Saleh village on Thursday, setting fire to olive trees, witnesses said.
Locals told Ma'an that troops entered the village and fired on houses, breaking into some of the homes and deploying on their rooftops.
Teargas canisters set the trees alight, the witnesses said, adding that villagers threw stones at the Israeli troops' vehicles.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said "violent and illegal riots took place near Nabi Saleh. Rioters hurled rocks towards security forces, who responded with riot dispersal means.
"The gathering was dispersed without injuries or damage. Reported claims of live fire being used and the burning of olive trees, are baseless and have no merit."
The village, abutted by illegal Israeli settlement Hallamish (Neve Zuf), is a focal point of demonstrations against Israel's occupation of the West Bank.

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The children of An-Nabi Saleh set off with kites and painted faces to the village's hill shortly after noon on Friday.
An hour later, they were sheltering in a village house, while five Israeli military jeeps surrounded the location and fired tear gas towards them, according to eyewitness accounts.
Activists made sure the children were distracted by switching on cartoons, and while they recovered from tear gas inhalation, they reflected on an afternoon in which Israel's military faced down clowns and a boy painted as Spiderman, arresting one Israeli activist.

Freedom in Colors
Activists had planned a day of colorful dress, balloons, face masks, face paints and kite-flying. A Facebook group urged volunteers to "Bring Your colourful smile and join us in our struggle for freedom!!"
"Let’s make our freedom colourful," the page said.
After a morning painting faces and making kites, between 20 and 30 children and 40 volunteers headed to a village mountain to fly paper kites.

At around 1.30 p.m., soldiers detained Israeli activist Tal King.
The children returned to a house in the village, and when some youth began throwing stones, the soldiers again fired tear gas towards the house. Children who left the house and were singing in the streets were also fired upon with tear gas.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said "an Israeli rioter was arrested and detained on site," and indicated he was in Israeli police custody.
She added: "Tear gas was fired at rioters, not targeted at children. We aren’t familiar with a group of children at the riot. If there were children among the crowd, we have no way of knowing."

Israeli army stops land reclamation project in West Bank
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- The committee for the union of agricultural workers said Friday that the Israeli army had prevented work from taking place on land reclamation projects in the villages of Jurish and Aqraba, south of Nablus and Imreiha, west of Jenin.
Project coordinator for the union Sa’ada Abu Sheikha said in a statement that “the Israeli army seized a heavy vehicle that was working on the lands in Aqraba and detained the workers for hours who were building the retaining walls.
"They prevented them from completing their work as well as stopping work on 20 dunams of land in Jurish, near the illegal settlement of Migdalim. They also stopped work on 50 dunams of land in the village of Imreiha in Ya'bad.”
Land reclamation projects aim to improve the source of income for families which rely on agriculture and also serve to protect vulnerable land from Israeli confiscation.
The committee said that the Israeli army prevented work on the lands under the pretext that they were located in Area C and close to settlements and a connecting bypass road.
The project is carried out by the committee for the union of agricultural workers in partnership with Palestinian NGOs under the management of agricultural relief committees. It is funded by the Dutch government.
In its statement, the union appealed to international organizations to protect the Palestinians and their property from Israeli settler attacks.

IOF troops quell the Maasara demonstration, arrest a child in al-Khalil
WEST BANK, (PIC)-- A number of Palestinians suffered breathing difficulties on Friday as a result of heavy use of teargas by the IOF in the process of quelling the weekly anti-wall demonstration at the village of Maasara near Bethlehem in the southern West Bank.
Spokesman for the popular committee against the apartheid wall and settlements in the Bethlehem district, Muhammad Breijeyyah, said that the IOF soldiers prevented the march from reaching the site where the wall is being built. They assaulted the participants in the march and fired teargas canisters at them causing many of them to suffer breathing difficulties.
The demonstrators held a rally where speakers mainly concentrated on the importance of Palestinian unity to face occupation plans against the Palestinian people and their land.
Meanwhile, IOF troops late on Thursday night arrested 15-year old Muhammad Ayesh after stopping him at the Shuhada Road in the old city of al-Khalil for allegedly having a knife on him.
Palestinians living in the old city face daily harassment by the IOF and the extremist Jewish settlers in the old city with the aim of forcing them to leave the old city to settle more extremist Jews in their place.

Soldiers fire at Qalqiliya protesters, injuring 4
QALQILIYA (Ma’an) -- The Israeli army fired tear gas at Palestinians demonstrating at the northern gate of Qalqiliya on Friday, injuring four witnesses said.
Locals told Ma'an that the village of Kafr Qaddum, to the east of Qalqiliya and overlooked by the illegal Israeli settlement Qedumim, organized a peaceful rally at the site to demand the opening of the gate in accordance with an Israeli Supreme Court ruling.
The army blocked the entrance to the gate, which separates the northern West Bank town from Israel and land belonging to Qalqiliya residents, and fired tear gas.
Murad Ishtewi, Shaaf Daoud Ishtewi, Tareq Abu Khaled and Ramzy Kamal Jum’a were injured after inhaling gas, the village council said.
Israeli settlers also set fire to lands adjoining Kafr Qaddum on Friday, local witnesses said. The land was owned by Suleiman Sa’eed Ali and Abed Al-Mahdi Ali.
An Israeli military spokesperson said "200 rioters east of Nablus are gathering and hurling rocks at security forces, who are responding with riot dispersal means."
