IDF attacks Gaza tunnels in response to week of terror incidents
Gaza militants fired rocket at southern Israel earlier Saturday, just days after four Israelis were killed in a West Bank shooting attack.
Israel Air Force planes struck targets in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Saturday, hours after Palestinian militants fired a rocket from the territory into
Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that its air force had attacked the coastal territory in response to a wave of security incidents over the last week. The army said that it had struck smuggling tunnels used by militants planning to infiltrateIsrael and commit terror acts against civilians soldiers.
The cross-border violence was the first since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Washington on Thursday to relaunch peace talks, and was a stark reminder of the obstacles both leaders face.
Early on Saturday, Gaza militants fired a rocket into southern Israel, causing no injuries, the Israeli military said.
Hours later, witnesses and Hamas security officials said Israeli aircraft fired rockets at targets in Gaza, including smuggling tunnels along the border with Egypt. At least two people were wounded, medical workers said.
The Islamists of Hamas routed forces loyal to Abbas to take over the Gaza Strip in 2007. Hamas rejects Abbas's peace moves and said on Thursday that 13 militant groups had agreed to work together to launch "more effective attacks" against Israel/
Hamas has claimed responsibility for two shooting attacks in the past week in the West Bank, where Abbas holds sway, including one that killed four Israelis. In its response to the attacks on Saturday night, the IDF said that it viewed Hamas as a terrorist organization and would not tolerate any attempts against its citizens or troops.

IAF targets Gaza tunnels Two Palestinians injured
An Israeli F-16 fighter jet
Israeli aircrafts strike three smuggling tunnels in southern Gaza following recent terror activity, rocket fire. The Israel Air Force struck three Gaza tunnels Saturday night, for the first time since the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks were launched in Washington.
Palestinian sources reported that the IAF struck targets in the Khan Younis and Rafah area. At least two Palestinians were injured and three are reportedly trapped in the collapsed tunnels.
An IDF Spokesman's Unit statement confirming the attack said that the strike targeted a terror tunnel through which terrorists were to be transported into Israel and two smuggling tunnels in southern Gaza Strip, adding the pilots reported hitting their targets.
The strike was in retaliation of the terror attacks which took place during the week: Tuesday saw four Israelis killed near Mount Hebron, Wednesday saw two Israelis injured near Ramallah, and Thursday saw a 12-year old girl wounded in a stoning attack at Tapuach Junction.
Rockets were fired form northern Gaza at Israel on Friday and Saturday, as well.

Officials from the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, told the Associated Press agency that the men were smugglers working in tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border.
Earlier in the day, Israeli officials said a rocket had been launched from Gaza into southern Israel.
On Tuesday, four Israeli settlers were shot dead in the West Bank, in an attack Hamas said it carried out.
Two Israelis were also injured in a shooting in the West Bank on Wednesday.
The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the latest round of direct talks between Israelis and Palestinians may be "the last chance for a very long time" to resolve the conflict.

Another Gazan killed by Israel amid talks
Israeli warplanes
Gazans retrieve the remains of another Palestinian, who has been killed in Israeli aerial assaults, amid ongoing talks between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Authority (PA).
The victim died alongside his fellow Palestinian in the city of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, when the Israeli Air Force launched two attacks on the tunnels, used for carrying supplies to the blockaded coastal sliver, AFP reported, citing Palestinian medics and witnesses.
About 1.5 million Palestinians in the enclave are dependent on the underground arteries for the food, medicine and other necessities they had been deprived of by the siege since mid-June 2007.
Tel Aviv enforced the restrictions, saying it was cracking down on the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, which has been defending Gaza against Israeli aggression.
The warplanes also targeted another site alleged to be a former base used by Hamas.
Three people also sustained injuries during the attacks, which the Israeli military claimed were responses to an alleged rocket fired from Gaza, which had caused no human loss or damage.
The incidents came as Israeli and PA officials are in Washington for direct talks. The talks broke off at the turn of 2009, when Israel launched a full-scale war on Gaza, killing more than 1,400 Palestinians.
Israeli tanks and bulldozers also carried out an incursion into Gaza on Thursday, the first day of the renewed negotiations.
Many Palestinian groups have already abandoned hope in the US-brokered revival of the process, citing the White House's partiality towards Tel Aviv and saying that acting PA Chief Mahmoud Abbas does not represent all the Palestinians.
The US authorities refuse to accept Hamas as a negotiating partner.
PA was also reportedly forced into joining the talks after being threatened by the US to lose ties with Washington.

IDF beefs up West Bank forces to counter terror attacks
After shooting attacks, battalions have been deployed along roads to man checkpoints, patrol highways to prevent further Hamas terror during peace talks.
After shooting attacks, battalions have been deployed along roads to man checkpoints, patrol highways to prevent further Hamas terror during peace talks.
The IDF increased its forces in the West Bank last week following a number of shooting attacks and amid assessments that Hamas will continue to trying to perpetrate terror attacks as Israeli-Palestinian peace talks continue.
Two battalions were transferred to the West Bank last week and were deployed along the roads to man checkpoints and patrol highways in an effort to prevent additional shooting attacks.
Last week, four Israelis were killed in a shooting attack near Kiryat Arba. Two more Israelis were wounded in an additional drive-by shooting near Ramallah.
Palestinian Authority security forces have launched an unprecedented wave of arrests throughout the West Bank, rounding up close to 300 Palestinians affiliated with Hamas, which claimed responsibility for the Wednesday's deadly hit.
IDF assessments are that Palestinian terror factions will continue trying to carry out terror attacks over the coming months in an effort to torpedo peace talks launched in Washington last week.
A Hamas spokesman told the Al-Hayat newspaper on Saturday that the group intends to continue its attacks on settlers because they are legitimate targets.Azat al-Ghashek reportedly said that Zionist settlers made up an entire army living on occupied land, with a large cache of weapons at their disposal.
He made the comments during an interview, adding that the peace talks were nothing but a media circus.
On Thursday, Reuters reported that 13 Gaza militant groups have joined forces to launch a wave of attacks against Israel.
When asked if the renewed attacks would include suicide bombings, a Hamas spokesman reportedly answered: All options are open.
Also on Thursday, Hamas condemned the launch of direct talks, saying their goal is to liquidate the Palestinian cause, and accused Abbas of allowing Israel to build settlements in the West Bank and denying the Palestinian refugees right of return.

Israeli raids claim lives in Gaza
Rocket fired across the border draws heavy Israeli retaliation, just two days after relaunch of peace talks.
Two Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air raids in the Gaza Strip, medics and security sources say. Another person has been critically injured.
The Israeli army launched three raids in the south of Gaza on Saturday after Palestinian fighters fired a rocket over the border.
The flare-up of violence on the Israel-Gaza border came just two days after the relaunch of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in the US.
Israeli aircraft reportedly struck targets including smuggling tunnels running under the border with Egypt at Rafah.
The two Palestinians were killed when one of the tunnels collapsed. Three others were wounded.
A raid also struck a former base of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the three raids, saying one was aimed at "a tunnel dug in the direction of Israeli territory" for attacks across the border.
Early on Saturday, Palestinian fighters fired a rocket from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, causing no injuries, the Israeli military said.
Gaza is under the control of Hamas, the Palestinian faction which is strongly opposed to negotiations with Israel.
Hamas pledge
Hamas has vowed to carry out attacks against Israeli targets in the coming weeks.
Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades carried out two shooting attacks against Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank last week, killing four people in one incident, and wounding two in the other.
Yitzhak Aharonovitz, the Israeli internal security minister, said on Saturday he expected the "imminent" arrests of the perpetrators of those attacks.
He said the attacks were not the only attempts by Palestinian fighters to cast a pall over the relaunch of peace talks.
"This week there have been dozens of alerts about attempts to carry out attack in Israel and in Judaea and Samaria [the occupied West Bank]," Aharonovitz said in comments broadcast by Israel's military radio station.
Peace talks
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, met in Washington on Thursday to resume direct talks after a 20-month suspension.
Netanyahu and Abbas agreed to keep talking and produce a framework for a permanent peace deal.
After returning from Washington, Netanyahu addressed ministers in the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday.
"He talked about this being a historic moment for peace," AL Jazeera's Sherine Tadros, reporting from Jerusalem, said.
"He said Israel needs to start to find creative solutions to the complex questions and issues facing them, none more prominent of course than the question of settlements and whether the partial settlement freeze in the occupied West Bank will be extended past its end of September deadline."
But Hamas, whose fighters routed forces loyal to Abbas to take over the Gaza Strip in 2007, rejects Abbas's negotiations.
The US, which is brokering the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, did not invite Hamas to the talks, because it recognises it as a "terrorist organisation." But political observers say that is a misguided approach.
"Sidelining Hamas in any process to craft genuine peace between Israelis and Palestinian is a glaring omission tantamount to having an elephant in the living room," says Larbi Sadiki, a lecturer at the University of Exeter. "Whether it is Obama's or the UN's negotiating room, pretending something of that size absent is an exercise in futility."
Sadiki says that, if invited to the negotiations, elements of Hamas would "readily speak directly with Israel,"because they believe that "it is better to get it directly from the horse's mouth."
Abbas, however, has repeatedly said he will present any peace deal to a national referendum, which would include the people of Gaza and the West Bank.
A vote in favour of any peace agreement would then put heavy pressure on Hamas to accept the will of the Palestinian people.
Abbas broke off the last round of direct talks when Israel launched a military assault on the Gaza Strip in December 2008.

Israeli army official says new attacks likely
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- After the shooting of four Israelis near Hebron on Tuesday, an Israeli army official said new attacks were likely and the upcoming period would be "even more tense."
Hamas' armed wing the Al-Qassam Brigades claimed the drive-by shooting Tuesday and a similar attack the next day, near Ramallah, in which two Israelis were injured.
The attacks were carried out in the 48 hours before President Mahmoud Abbas met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington to re-launch peace talks after a 20-month hiatus.
We knew that there would be an attack, but there was no concrete warning," a senior Israeli military official said in a report on the army's website.
The official said the attack in Hebron was "extremely professional," and the most serious attack the region has seen in the past eight years.
"Terrorism in Hebron is not seen above the surface, and therefore Hamas, which has many supporters in Hebron, is becoming organized underground, with sleeper cells" he added.
The report said the army's central command anticipated the attacks could "spark reactions from Israel as well," noting that "Israeli citizens can also execute acts of violence against the Palestinian population."
An increase in settler violence against Palestinians has been reported since the shooting Tuesday.
In Nablus, Israeli settlers broke car windows Tuesday evening and cut down olive trees, Palestinian Authority settlement official Ghassan Doughlas said. On Wednesday witnesses said approximately 50 settlers attacked the home of a Palestinian family near the illegal Kiryat Arba settlement.. The same day, a Palestinian worker in Israel, from Dura in the Hebron district, said he was attacked by his Israeli coworkers, who were angered by the shooting.
The Israeli air force bombed southern Gaza overnight on Saturday in response to "shooting attacks in Judea and Samaria last week which killed four Israelis and wounded two others," an army statement said. The strike was also in retaliation to a projectile fired from the Strip hours earlier, according to the statement.
Gaza medics reported two were killed in the airstrikes, and a Gaza Health Ministry spokesman said three were injured.
