An old man was killed when IOF troops opened fire at him as he was about to open the door of his house when they knocked it.
Subhiyah al-Wazir, widow
I live with my husband, '?Abed al-Wazir, in the Sabih building in Ras al-'?Ein, Nablus .
On Tuesday, 16 October, around 2 a.m., my husband woke me and said that army troops were in the neighborhood. I looked out the window through which you can see the building's staircase and saw a few soldiers standing on the stairs. We didn't go back to sleep. Until 4 a.m., every once in a while we heard a steady stream of gunfire and a loud, frightening noise. We didn't know what was happening outside.
Around 4 a.m., my son Shaqer, who lives on a street parallel to ours, phoned us and said that soldiers were calling out on a loudspeaker to the residents of our building to go outside. I also heard the calls. Shaqer said that everyone else in our building had already gone outside, and that the army apparently wanted to demolish the building.
We opened the door to the house to go outside, and a second before we stepped out, my husband asked me if I'd taken my ID card. I said that I hadn't. I turned around to go and get it. At that moment, I heard two shots. My husband fell to the floor and said he had been hit. I asked him where, but he didn't answer. I saw blood coming from his mid-section. I screamed, '?Abu Shaqer has been killed'?. Help me'?'?
My neighbor, Umm Ri'ad, and her son, along with the sons of other neighbors, Nimer and Hilal Sabih, came to see what happened. Outside, I saw our neighbors and three soldiers standing on the steps leading to our house, about fifty meters away. They aimed their weapons at our house.
The neighbors lifted my husband from the floor and took him outside. Umm Ri'ad and I followed them out. I saw lots of soldiers on the steps leading to the building, their weapons aimed at us. They ordered Nimer and Hilal to go to them. The soldiers cuffed their hands and pushed them into a sitting position on the ground.
Then they called to Ri'ad and cuffed his hands too. I held my husband, who was lying on the ground and bleeding badly. The sight drove me mad, and I shouted, '?They've killed him, call an ambulance'?'? I repeated this time and again, and then one of the soldiers ordered me to shut up.
Around 4:30, our neighbors in the Sabih building summoned an ambulance. A Red Crescent ambulance arrived at about 4:45. The paramedics put my husband into the ambulance and took him to hospital in Nablus . I went along with him. At the hospital, they treated him for an hour and a half or two hours, but the doctors couldn't save his life and said he was dead.
I am in terrible shock. I don't understand how this happened to us. The soldiers had ordered us to come out of the house, and we were just getting ready to go outside.

Died from his wounds after Israel delayed his transportation to a hospital in its territories even though he had a permit to pass.
Nimer: of Gaza city, died at the checkpoint in the area of Erez (Industrial Zone), North Gaza district, following a delay in receiving medical care. He arrrived at the Erez checkpoint after having received a permit to enter Israel, but soldiers fired at the ambulance and ordered it to return to the hospital in Gaza. The following day, he returned to the checkpoint and was allowed to pass after waiting for more than two hours, but died when he got to the Israeli side.
Bassam Abu 'Ataya, ambulance driver
I have been an ambulance driver for the Palestinian Ministry of Health since 2000. I transport patients and wounded persons inside the Gaza Strip, and also take to Erez Crossing patients who need to receive treatment in Israel. The order to transport a patient to Erez usually comes from the administrative director of the ambulance station.
On Monday, 22 October, around 4:20 P.M., the administrative director called me and asked me to take a patient from a-Shifa Hospital to Erez Crossing. We went to the hospital, the patient was placed in the ambulance, and the doctors hooked him up to a respirator, a device for checking blood pressure, and an oxygen meter.
Around 4:30, I left the hospital for Erez Crossing. I drove quickly because the patient's life was in danger. He was bleeding from the mouth and nose, and was in very serious condition. A doctor and nurse came along in the ambulance to care for the patient. When I left the hospital, an Israeli liaison officer called and asked me how soon we would be at Erez. I told him it would take about fifteen or twenty minutes, and that is how long it took.
When we got to the crossing, I got out and handed over for inspection the identity cards of everyone in the ambulance: the doctor, the nurse, the patient, his escort, and myself. We waited for a response from the Israeli side. After about fifteen minutes, they let us enter. We approached the crossing and when we got to the pedestrian entrance, the patient's escort, ‘Adnan Shuheibar, got out of the ambulance and walked in to the crossing. I drove over to the lane for ambulances. When I got to the gate, it was closed. It was 5:14 P.M. The ambulance's spotlight and blinking red lights were on. I saw some vehicles waiting at the crossing.
At that moment, one of the tanks signaled to me by blinking his lights, and I thought he wanted me to turn off the lights of the ambulance. I turned off the lights. A few seconds later, the tank signaled again, so I turned off the blinking red lights. The moment I did that, a soldier who was about eight meters from the ambulance fired two shots. Then a soldier called me on my MIRS phone and ordered me, in Hebrew, to go back to the Palestinian side of the crossing. I told her that I had received approval to enter and asked why she was telling me to go back. She replied that they had summoned only the patient's escort and not the ambulance. While we talked, I turned the ambulance around to face south, towards the Palestinian side. Meanwhile, Walid, the Palestinian liaison officer, called and told me to return. I returned to the Palestinian liaison office at the crossing.
I called Ahmad Abu Ghazeh, the health coordinator for the Palestinian Authority, and told him that the Israelis had ordered me to return and that the patient was in very serious condition. He told me that he would speak with the Israelis and get back to me. I waited at the checkpoint. The patient's sons were there. They were standing next to the Palestinian liaison office, and they also called Ahmad Abu Ghazeh. They looked tense.
After about thirty-five minutes, Ahmad Abu Ghazeh called and told me to go back to a-Shifaa Hospital because the Israelis said they had closed Erez Crossing and wouldn't let us through. I stayed where I was. The patient was bleeding and in serious condition. I told the family that the crossing was closed. I was afraid they would think it was my fault we were going back. I spoke with Walid and he also told me to return because the crossing was closed. I drove the patient back to a-Shifaa Hospital.

Mahmoud Kamal Kamel Abu Taha 23
23 year-old resident of Rafah, died on 28.10.2007 in Erez (Industrial Zone), North Gaza district, following a delay in receiving medical care. Additional information: Cancer patient dies after being delayed entry into Israel for 10 days even though he had a permit to pass.
Gazan cancer patient dies after being delayed entry into Israel for 10 days
In August 2007, Mahmoud Abu Taha, 21, was diagnosed with cancer of the small intestine. He underwent surgery at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, but the operation failed. After receiving chemotherapy at the European Hospital in Gaza , physicians found that his intestines were blocked and that he required emergency surgery in Israel . While at the hospital, Abu Taha was intravenously fed a vitamin solution. The hospital had a shortage of the solution because of the siege on Gaza and was forced to drop Abu Taha's feeding from four to two portions of the solution a day. As a result, he lost an appreciable amount of weight.
On 18 October, Abu Taha's family managed to get him a permit to enter Israel so that he could undergo surgery at Tel Hashomer Hospital . That same day, he was taken by ambulance to Erez Checkpoint, his father accompanying him. When the father went to arrange the crossing, Shabak agents detained him and ordered the ambulance to return to the hospital in Gaza . The father remained in detention for 11 days.
Only yesterday, 10 days later, was Abu Taha's entry to Israel arranged. The Palestinian ambulance carrying him waited at the checkpoint for five hours before being allowed to cross. Today, the family was informed that Abu Taha died a few hours after he crossed into Israel , although they have not yet received any specific details on his death. The father was released from detention following his son's death.
The health system in the Gaza Strip is able to supply only limited services and due to Israel 's siege policy, the quality of treatment provided is steadily declining. As of June 2007, Israel has forbidden Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip to go abroad, even to receive medical treatment. The only possibility remaining to sick people who need treatment that is unavailable in the Gaza Strip is to seek treatment in Israel . However, only a small number of entry permits are given and only following a lengthy process.
