Israeli PM says 'sorry' after Palestinian mother and four children killed in their home
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today apologised over the killing of a Palestinian woman and four of her children in a raid in Gaza.
Five members of the Abu Meatik family died yesterday after it's claimed a tank fired on their home during the latest incursion by Israel into the Hamas-ruled territory.
Sisters Rudina, six, and Hana, three, were killed along with their brothers Saleh, four, and 15-month-old Mousab, medics revealed.
Today Mr Olmert, who has ordered an army investigation, said: "The state of Israel and the government of Israel are deeply sorry when any civilian or non-combatant is hurt, particularly with regard to the mother and four of her children, who were killed.
"We still don't know the exact circumstances. They will be investigated by the army and it will publish the exact findings of this incident."
The attack took place in Beit Hanoun, a town in northern Gaza near the Israeli border often used by Palestinian militants to fire rockets into southern Israel.
Palestinian militants have carried out a series of attacks along the border in recent weeks.
The Islamic Jihad militant group said one of its gunmen was killed about 400 metres from the family's home.
The Israeli army said it used tanks and aircraft to target a group of gunmen who approached the border, but a tank shell apparently veered off target and struck the home.
Beit Hanoun farmer Omar Abdel Nabi said he was driving his tractor in a nearby field when two or three explosions shook the ground.
"People were screaming that a tank shell landed in the next street," he said. "I carried two people covered in blood out of a house."
Olmert
The children were taken to a local hospital mortuary, where distraught family members and medics stood over the bodies, wailing and flailing their hands in the air.
The Israeli army frequently operates in the Gaza Strip against Palestinian militants, who have fired hundreds of rockets into southern Israel since the Hamas militant group took control of Gaza last June.
Israel says it holds Gaza's Hamas rulers responsible for the attacks, and accuses militants of endangering civilians by operating in residential areas like Beit Hanoun.
In recent weeks, militants have tried to infiltrate the border at least four times.
They say the operations are a response to Israel's economic blockade of Gaza.
Israel has sealed Gaza's borders since the Hamas takeover, greatly restricting the flow of fuel, cement and other basic goods into the area and worsening the hardship in the already impoverished area.
Egypt, which borders Gaza's south, has been trying to mediate a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
Last week, the Islamic militant group said it would agree to a six-month truce with Israel.
The Israelis have dismissed the offer, saying Hamas will use the lull to rearm. Officials also reportedly say Hamas must control smaller and even more radical armed groups, such as Islamic Jihad, for a cease-fire to work.
While battling Hamas in Gaza, Israel has been conducting peace talks with the rival Palestinian government of President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank.
The sides hope to reach a peace deal by the end of the year, though Abbas complained after a trip to the White House last week that he was growing pessimistic about the lack of progress in negotiations.
Hamas is not a party to the talks.
Today the Israeli army lifted a blanket closure of the West Bank and Gaza it had imposed for 10 days over the Jewish Passover holiday.
The lockdown, imposed on April 18, barred Palestinians from entering Israel.
Israel routinely seals the Palestinian territories during Jewish holidays, seen as a time of high risk of militant attack as Jews gather in public places for prayer and celebration.
The closure mostly affected the West Bank, since Gaza has been virtually sealed since the Hamas takeover.
Thousands of Palestinians enter Israel each day for work, medical care and to see relatives.
More than 400 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip in the last five months, many of them civilians.

Soldier sentenced to 6 years for killing a Palestinian youth after pushing him off a speeding jeep
'Amran 'Abd al-Ghani Gheith Abu Hamdiyeh, 17
The Israeli Central Court in Jerusalem sentenced an Israeli soldier to six and a half years imprisonment although he was convicted of killing a Palestinian youth after pushing him off a speeding military jeep in Hebron, the Arabs48 news website reported.
The incident took place six years ago when Israeli border-guard policemen kidnapped several residents from the southern West Bank city of Hebron, including Amran Abu Hamdiyya, 17. As the military jeep was moving, one of the soldiers identified as Yania Lalza, pushed Abu Hamdiyya off the moving vehicle, the Arabs48 added.
The officer, Yanai Lalza, was also convicted of robbery, destroying evidence and obstructing justice.
Israeli online daily, Haaretz, reported that the soldier and his fellow soldiers abducted several Palestinian residents of Hebron and beat them with truncheons and rifles.
Under a plea bargain, the soldier confessed, among other things, that he and another soldier identified as Shahar Botbeka, had beaten Abu Hamdiyya and then opened the back door of the moving jeep before Lalza pushed him out.
Haaretz added that the soldier shouted “he is dead, he is dead”, but the soldiers continued driving and did not attempt to help the youth.
The soldiers later covered their crime, falsified documents and coordinated their stories, Haaretz reported.
The Israeli Investigations Department sent an undercover agent who infiltrated the four suspected soldiers to gather information on the attack.
The investigation revealed that Lalza and other soldiers “celebrated their first day of service Hebron non December 30, 2002, by launching an abuse campaign in the city”, Haaretz added.
The soldiers first kidnapped a Palestinian youth indentified as Ala’ Sonokrot, and took him to an isolated location where they forced him to stand facing a wall.
One of the soldiers identified as Botbeka, struck the youth with a pickax handle while Lalza was beating and kicking the youth.
Haaretz also stated that a third soldier identified as, Denis Alhasoz, photographed the abuse while another soldier, identified as Bassam Wahabe, who was driving the jeep, stood and watched.
The youth suffered a broken skull and was let off the jeep later on without receiving any medical attention by the soldiers.
Another abuse incident was carried out by the same soldiers against Hamza rajabi, 22, when the soldiers beat him and stole 150 NIS from him before letting him go.
Also in Hebron and on the same day, the soldiers abducted a Palestinian man and ordered him to jump off the moving military jeep. The man managed to jump and left the scene limping.
Later on the same say, they kidnapped Abu Hamdiyya and ordered him to jump off the moving jeep. He tried to hold on the top of the jeep and tried to prevent the soldiers from pushing him out.
Haaretz said that Jerusalem Court District judge, Orit Efaal-Gabay, wrote in her verdict that the Botbeka use forced and released the deceased youth’s grasp on the jeeps’ strap and shoved him out of it which was driving at 80 kilometers, nearly 50 miles, per hour.
The judge added that the youth’s head struck against the ground and the soldier, Lalza, saw the youth fighting for his life but did not “lift a finger to help him and prevent the fatal result”, Haaretz said.
The soldier also photographed the incident. The investigation by the undercover agent resulted in disbanding the unit.
Haaretz also reported that Israel decided to compensate the family an amount of 450.000 NIS which would be collected from Lalza.
Moreover, Haaretz also said that the driver of the jeep was convicted, among other things, of “being accessory to man slaughter” on a separate trial, and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
The mother of the slain youth said that the prison sentence against Lalza was light, and added that her son was the sole breadwinner of the family.
