IDF to track foreign anti-Israel groups
23 mrt 2011
Israel tells Facebook: Remove Intifada page
Minister Edelstein sends letter to Mark Zuckerberg requesting shutdown of Facebook group calling for third intifada, violent uprising against Israel in May.
A month after the launch of a Facebook group calling for a third Intifada, Minister of Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs Yuli Edelstein sent a letter to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg Wednesday, demanding that the page calling a Palestinian uprising be shut down immediately.
The Facebook group was launched less than a month ago with the number of members growing dramatically, with nearly 250,000 people expressing support for launching a third Intifada on May 15, marked by Arabs as Nakba Day %u2013 a day where Palestinians mark the "catastrophe of Israel's establishment."
The founders of the Facebook group claim that they got the idea for the page from the recent uprisings throughout the Middle East that led to the ousting of the Tunisian and Egyptian leaders and the fall of their regimes.
There is no need to explain what the outrageous incitement on the page in question can cause %u2013 from harming innocent Jews and Israelis and through to an armed struggle against Israel, Minister Edelstein wrote in a letter to the founder of the popular social network.
In his letter, Edelstein stressed that he wasn't writing in his official capacity but as someone who shares the values of freedom of expression, and said he believed that there must be a discernable difference between freedom of expression and freedom to incite.
The founders of the group hope that a popular uprising like those that broke out in the Arab world would also bring about the downfall of the State of Israel, with the help of groups supporters in the Palestinian Authority and countries bordering on Israel.
Muslim boycott
The group's doctrines include a call for simultaneous protests on the Jordanian, Egyptian and Syrian borders while Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza will launch attacks on Israeli settlements. Moreover, they ask for "the help of our brothers in Lebanon" who will assist by raining missiles down on Israel.
Since its launch, the Facebook group has received a great deal of coverage in the Palestinian and Arab media. Its founders, who remain anonymous, warned Facebook that shutting down their page would lead the Muslim world to boycott Facebook.
It seems that the threat did little to impress the site managers as one of the group's founders who calls himself "Son of Palestine" reported calls for violence.
Son of Palestine also accused Facebook's management team of forging the number of supporters the group has, claiming that the number is much higher than 250,000.

Intifada Facebook page removed, re-launched
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKrNuXfGTEo
(Video) Social network removes page calling for third intifada despite previously claiming such 'upsetting' content was legitimate. Page re-launched soon after being removed.
The Facebook page calling for a violent protest against Israel and launching a third Intifada has been removed. The page was removed Tuesday afternoon in spite of earlier claims made by the social network's spokesman claiming the group's administrators had a right to protest against Israel and call for a third Intifada.
The page included inciting and anti-Israel content, a call to take violent action against Israel, Palestinian propaganda videos and more.
The page was incredibly popular, receiving some 350,000 'likes.' Many of its posts received thousands of comments from surfers.
Their main message was identifying with the popular struggle in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya %u2013 and a call to launch a third Intifada on May 15, Nakba day.
The page went online a few weeks ago and was received with a great deal of opposition from Israeli web surfers and Israel supporters abroad. Its content was seen as illegitimate incitement which encouraged violence.
Last week, Minister of Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs Yuli Edelstein sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg asking the Facebook creator to remove the page because it promotes violence. The letter was sent last Wednesday %u2013 on the day of the Jerusalem terror attack which killed one woman and injured 40.
Initially, the network ignored complaints sent by Israeli surfers. After Edelstein's letter was received Facebook published a response that angered many, saying: "While some kinds of comments and content may be upsetting for someone - criticism of a certain culture, country, religion, lifestyle, or political ideology, for example - that alone is not a reason to remove the discussion.
"We strongly believe that Facebook users have the ability to express their opinions, and we don't typically take down content, groups or pages that speak out against countries, religions, political entities, or ideas," Facebook's spokeswoman said. Yet in spite of this response, the page was removed Tuesday afternoon.
Last Thursday, the group's administrators said that they weren't trying to provoke violence and were only realizing their freedom of expression. They warned Facbook's management team that removing the page would lead to a comprehensive Muslim boycott on the social network and claimed that it wasn't fair to focus on their page when there were so many similar pages online.
Meanwhile, the page has been re-launched just hours after being removed and is rapidly gaining 'likes'.

Facebook sued over Intifada page
Zuckerberg. To fight suit
'American citizen of Jewish origin' sues Zuckerberg for $1 billion for not removing page fast enough.
Facebook and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg have been hit with a lawsuit seeking more than $1 billion in damages over a page on the social network which called for a "Third Intifada" against Israel.
Facebook this week shut down the "Third Intifada" page, which had almost 500,000 fans, but the lawsuit filed in a court here claims that the social network showed "negligence" by not quickly responding to appeals to remove the page.
Besides awarding damages, the complaint calls on the court to bar Facebook "from allowing the Facebook page titled 'Third Palestinian Intifada,' and other related and similar sites, which advocate violence and death to Jews."
The suit, a copy of which was obtained by technology blog TechCrunch, was filed in DC Superior Court by Larry Klayman, who describes himself in the complaint as "an American citizen of Jewish origin" who is "active in matters concerning the security of Israel and all people."
Klayman also identifies himself as the founder of Freedom Watch, whose website describes it as a political advocacy group dedicated to protecting privacy, free speech and other rights and "our national sovereignty against the incompetent, terrorist state-controlled United Nations."
Facebook dismissed the case as "without merit" and said it would fight.
"While we haven't been served with a complaint, we believe the case is without merit and we will fight it vigorously," a Facebook spokesman said.
Facebook shut down the page on Tuesday, several days after Israeli Public Diplomacy Minister Yuli Edelstein sent a letter to Zuckerberg urging him to remove it.
Facebook said the page was initially tolerated because it "began as a call for peaceful protest" but direct calls for violence began appearing and the page was removed for violating Facebook's policies.

Hamas denies Syria statement pinned to Mishaal
Khalid Mishaal
DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- The Hamas leadership has absolutely denied statements pinned to the party's politburo chief Khalid Mishaal concerning Yusuf al-Qaradawi, president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, and developments in Syria.
We absolutely deny the positions posted on websites that have been attributed to the movement's political bureau chairman regarding events in Syria, especially what relates to Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi. The movement's position on the current events was expressed in a statement issued on Saturday, Hamas said in a new statement.
Hamas had confirmed its support of both the leadership and people of Syria and highlighted that Syria's leadership and people have stood with the Palestinians' resistance and rights and embraced the Palestinian resistance forces.
The leadership and people of Syria have stood by the Palestinians' resistance and rights and embraced and supported the Palestinian resistance forces, especially Hamas, in the darkest and most difficult of circumstances. It has taken major gambles, challenges and risks and remained steadfast under pressure in order to commit to upholding the policy of defiance and resistance in the region, and to support the people of Palestine and their resistance in particular.
What is happening is an internal affair concerning the people of Syria, Hamas said. But Hamas, based on its principle of respect for the will and aspirations of the Arab and Muslim peoples, hopes the current situation will pass with the aspirations and hopes of the Syrians achieved, and the internal cohesion and stability of Syria preserved, and its role in confrontation and defiance enhanced.

Palestinian youths reject policy of security screening in the W. Bank
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- A group of Palestinian youths in the West Bank launched Thursday a new page on the facebook calling on Palestinian youths to reject the PA security forces policy of security screening as a condition to apply for government employment.
The youths also called on the PA leadership and its militia to stop such an abhorred policy, stressing that their campaign was supported by human rights organizations in the region that also confirmed the illegality of the policy. They said that their campaign was attracting more supporters and that the coming days would witness a number of popular activities in this regard.
The militia of Fatah that controls security in the West Bank in coordination with the IOF troops compels every Palestinian citizen applying for work in the government to pass security check, which is really more of a political check than a security check.
Meanwhile, the League of Muslim Youth in the West Bank called on the PA militia to release 480 Palestinian political detainees in their jails across the West Bank, explaining that 80 of the detainees were prosecuted before military courts and received oppressive jails sentences despite being civilians.
They also pointed out that the remaining 400 detainees weren't brought to any court and that they are still languishing in the PA jails, adding that 50 detainees obtained release orders from courts but the courts' orders were ignored by the Fatah militia.

Third intifada website bypasses Facebook closure
WASHINGTON, (PIC)-- Palestinian youths in the United States have launched a website similar to Facebook to support calls for a third intifada (uprising) against Israel on May 15 timed to commemorate the Palestinian Nakba.
The organizers said the site, dubbed Al-Quds Moon, was launched to support the struggle of the Palestinians to restore their full legitimate rights as stipulated by United Nations resolutions.
They confirmed the site does not follow the agendas of any political parties, but only the Palestinians in the occupied territories, according to the introduction page.
They added that the site is not subject to the control as was the case for a popular similar websites hosted by Facebook; and it cannot be blocked by U.S. authorities because it supports a peaceful uprising.
The organizers also clarified that the page is not a substitute for the multiple Facebook pages serving the same cause. It is complementary to these efforts, they said, and it could serve as a substitute if the Facebook administration shuts the pages down.
The site has many of the same features as Facebook and allows members to create groups, upload photos and post videos as well as to write blogs and chat using voice and image.

Yisrael Beiteinu website hacked
Hackers plant Palestinian flag, pyramid on site's homepage 'in response to Lieberman the extremist'.
The official site of the Yisrael Beiteinu Party was hacked Saturday, and an Egyptian pyramid and Palestinian flag planted on its homepage.
The pro-Palestinian hackers wrote on the site that they had hacked it "in response to Lieberman the extremist", referring to the chairman of the right-wing party, Avigdor Lieberman.
The hackers decried "the party of the criminal Avigdor Lieberman, foreign minister of the Zionist entity", and commended the materializing truce between rival Palestinian factions.
"To the great outrage of all Zionists, an agreement shall be signed between Fatah and Hamas, which equal Palestine," the hackers wrote.
It was not the first time Yisrael Beiteinu's site had been hacked. In June of 2010 hackers planted messages condemning Israel on the site, in response to the calamitous raid of an aid flotilla to Gaza.

Hackers put Palestinian flag on Yisrael Beitenu's website
Pro-Palestinian hackers broke into Yisrael Beiteinu's website and placed a photograph of the Palestinian flag next to an Egyptian pyramid on the site's homepage.
The hackers wrote under the photograph: "In response to Lieberman extremists, we hacked into the website of Yisrael Beiteinu, the party of the criminal Avigdor Lieberman, the Zionist entity's foreign minister." The text also included statements supporting the Palestinian reconciliation agreement, which was signed "in spite of Zionist opposition."

Israeli Border Policewoman as Stone-Cold Killer
Shani Sevilia
A new expose of Israeli police brutality and torture exploded yesterday with reports that a member of a special Border Police unit, Shani Sivilia, had been accused of torturing a Palestinian boy in March 2010, by cocking and pretending to fire her pistol into his head at close range, all in response the deadly act of his possessing three firecrackers.
While the charges brought against her were shocking enough, even worse was the discovery by Israeli journalist, Ido Kenan, of her Facebook page, which is replete with the feverish product of what Ido cinematically calls Dangerous Mind. Kenan has published a version of this in Yediot. http://fwd4.me/00j1
Yesterday, I wrote about the specific charges brought against her by the police special affairs unit. Today, we'll examine the contents of her formerly publicly accessible Facebook page (now private). There are a number of interesting themes running through this material which it's worth paying close attention to.
Sevilia is released from her army service
First, Sivilia is a Mizrahit. As such, she clearly feels a profound need to separate herself from the Palestinians who, if she saw her own image in the mirror, she would resemble. But there is a desperate need among some Israeli Jews of Arab origin to say: We're not like them. We're better than them. This phenomenon, of course, is not restricted to Israel.
This happens in all societies in which there are waves of immigration and the penultimate ethnic newcomer seeks to distinguish itself from the most recent wave, which is at the very bottom of the social status pyramid. In this country, Germans said the same about Italians and the Irish and all of them said the same about African-Americans and even about Jews. You always bash the guy who's one rung below you.
18 December 2010: Sevilla hate Arabs
Sivilia clearly hates Arabs and leftists. But she reserves her greatest scorn and most apoplectic rage against what we might call race-mixing: Jewish women dating Arab men. The language she reserves for such women is the harshest of all you'll see in her Facebook profile. In this, she is embracing the campaign of far-right nationalist rabbis against racial mingling between Jews and Arabs, including the field of sexual relations, commerce (no employment of Arab men by Jewish businesses), and housing (no renting to Arabs).
It doesn't seem that Sivilia herself is religious (after all, one of her Facebook Likes is The Land of Milk, Alcohol, Honey and Drugs). But her own prejudices overlap quite comfortably with those of the nationalist religious right and therefore it's comfortable for her to take up religious imagery and phrasing in her comments. As a Mizrahit, she considers herself not religious, but traditional. In other words, someone for whom religion is comfortable without it turning into full-fledge Haredi-style religious observance.
In September 2010, she writes in Facebook:
Happy [Yom] Kippur to all. Surely, all the kids are going to the main drag (or downtown) to throw stones at Arabs.
In November 2010, Sevilia is released from her army service (which she appears to have served in the Border Police if I'm correct). This commendation to her from a friend sounds much more ominous in light of the accusations levelled against her:
At this wonderful time, the citizens and State of Israel thank you for your service and the sense of security you provided us.
In December 2010, the accused torturer writes on her Facebook page:
Fuck the world, another incident in which two Arabs stabbed [Jewish] girls, right by my house! Fuck your mothers you sons of whores!! Sons of whores them and anyone who likes them. May God repay them.
When a Facebook Friend writes:
Any [Jewish] girl who goes out with Arabs should die.
Sivilia replies (and again keep in mind the acts of torture she's being charged with):
You just now figured this out?? They should flay the skin from their bodies and cast them in the Dead [Salt] Sea.
In January 2011, the accused transfers to a private (civilian) company used by the Israeli State to provide security in the Territories.
Here she will continue with the same duties she performed while in the Border Police. She completes a special course, is equipped with a weapon and writes the following:
Completed the special course. Now back to the Territories with a vengeance!
In February 2011, Sivilia is still consumed with matters of love and death between Jewish girls and Arab men. She recommends that a documentary created by an Israeli group which warns that the Arabs are using sex as a weapon to overwhelm Israel's Jewish population.
She declares the video should be distributed as widely as possible through social networking sites:
Every daughter of a whore who goes out with Arab men, they should torture her body!
I have no more curses left in me. The most important thing is that they [Jewish women] should suffer before they kill them.
On February 27th, the security contractor writes of her pride in being called a Nazi while doing checkpoint duty:
Yesterday, someone called me a Nazi. From my point of view, good job!
On April 27th, she curses the Sheikh Jarrah activists because they disrespected her:
God take [kill] these leftists.
When a friend responds that even God doesn't want them. Sivilia says well, He promised me that he would consider it.
In his article, Ido Kenan notes that the investigation against her had no bearing on the security work she performed. Just a day before charges were filed against her she was about to take an IDF fitness test, which she presumably needed to pass in order to perform her duties. Just a week before charges were filed she's still doing duty at checkpoints.
She notes that the company she works for is called Civilian Intelligence (Modiin Ezrahi), one of several Blackwater-like Israeli companies with whom the Israeli government contracts to provide security in the Territories. This is part of the increasing privatization of the Occupation, which allows Israelis to see it as less a formal function of the State and its military, and instead as a more normal, day-to-day civilian process.
Thanks to Dena Shunra for research and translation assistance in preparing post.

Palestinian hackers add bin Laden image to Israeli Facebook pages
Hackers take control of the Facebook pages of Bank Leumi, Israel Railways and the national lottery agency Mifal Hapayis.
Palestinian hackers took control Friday night of the Facebook pages of Bank Leumi, Israel Railways and the national lottery agency Mifal Hapayis. All three targets are managed by the same person, Adam Shuv, whose own Facebook page was also hacked over the weekend.
The hackers left a calling card on the sites they broke into: the message "hacked for Palestine" and the image of Osama bin Laden.
Most of the damage was repaired by last night, as Leumi officials endeavored to reassure customers that the bank's own computers and servers are secure and were not affected by the Facebook folly.
The hackers posted status updates on the pages, in Hebrew, which like any Facebook status update appeared, under the names of those who presumably wrote them - in this case, Israel Railways and Mifal Hapayis - on the Facebook pages of all those organizations' myriad Facebook friends. Some of those friends responded to the hackers' statements with some juicy comments of their own.
The Twitter account of Shuv's Internet company, Refresh, was also hacked, with a tweet, in Arabic, saying "I posted a new picture" and giving the link to an anti-Israeli image.
Some of the damage was repaired in the course of Friday night and Saturday morning, but for some periods the Israel Railways and Mifal Hapayis Facebook pages were temporarily unavailable. The Leumi site was repaired first, and was hack-free by yesterday morning.
Shuv said that pro-Palestinian hackers had stolen the identity of a Refresh employee who had been the administrator of the three Facebook pages that were hacked, and said his staff acted quickly to recover control of the employee's Facebook account.
On Friday night, after learning about the virtual break-ins, Shuv posted the following status: "Hostile elements identifying with Al-Qaida hacked into our Facebook pages. Rest assured that everything is under control and will be fixed."
Bank Leumi posted the following status update to its 42,500 Facebook friends: "We are pleased to report that the operation to end the takeover by foreign elements of our page has ended successfully and that the situation is back to normal."
The bank said in a statement that it took rapid action to tackle the problem, stressing that the security of the bank's own computers and servers was never compromised.

BBC under fire for 'censoring' Palestine lyric
(13:44) Mic Righteous - Fire In The Booth
Mic Righteous's improvised set on BBC 1Xtra met with complaints after corporation masks the words 'free Palestine'.
The BBC is under attack for using sound effects to mask the lyric "free Palestine" from a performance by rapper Mic Righteous on BBC Radio 1Xtra.
The corporation is being accused of bias after effectively editing the words from Mic Righteous's improvised set, in which he expressed his views on subjects ranging from the American government to poverty and the floods in Pakistan.
The song was recorded for Charlie Sloth's late night hip-hop show on 4 December, but protests have been mounting since the performance was rebroadcast as part of a "best of" from the show on 30 April.
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign on Wednesday posted a statement on its website urging listeners to write to the BBC and the Radio Times to complain, and to post their views on Sloth's 1Xtra home page.
Describing the edit as an "extraordinary act of censorship", the campaign asked why the BBC did not ban the song "Free Nelson Mandela" when it was released in 1984. At the time, Mandela was still considered a terrorist by many western governments.
A BBC spokesperson said a late night music show was not considered an appropriate forum for political controversy.
The corporation explained its decision in a statement: "All BBC programmes have a responsibility to be impartial when dealing with controversial subjects and an edit was made to Mic Righteous' freestyle to ensure that impartiality was maintained."
A video of the rap on YouTube has been played nearly 187,000 times.
Mic Righteous, who was raised in Margate, was recorded saying: "I can still scream 'Free Palestine' for my pride, still pray for peace, still burn the Fed for the brutality they spread over the world. Pakistan's a[sic] ocean of bodies in the brown water still nobody helps."
The number of comments on YouTube and Sloth's homepage is also increasing.
A critic calling themselves Speltwrong wrote: "Once again I find myself overwhelmingly disappointed by the blatant bias shown by the BBC towards the people of Palestine. Outrageous …"
John R Porter wrote: "Not content with banning an appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee for humanitarian relief in Gaza, the wretched bureaucrats at the BBC have now decided that the very mention of Palestine in a song is unacceptable. The BBC deserves ridicule and contempt for this."

Israeli army filters internet, email
The recent Internet restrictions are seen as an attempt to reduce the leak of sensitive or embarrassing data by Israeli soldiers.
The Israeli army has banned access to many websites on its network in an attempt to reduce the leak of sensitive or embarrassing data to the Internet.
During the past weeks, accessing popular social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook have been banned from work computers within the Israeli army's offices and bases, Haaretz reported on Friday.
Access to email services such as Gmail and Hotmail has also been blocked from the army's premises.
Army personnel are now only allowed to use Israeli email services at gov.il, and have access to a few other selected websites.
Israeli soldiers have protested against the recent clampdowns, arguing that they need free access to the Internet, because they use the Internet to carry out all their tasks since they are only allowed to go home only once or twice a week.
The latest restrictions come nearly one year after the Israeli army faced international embarrassment over images and videos uploaded by soldiers to social networks.
In one instance, an Israeli soldier posted a video of himself dancing offensively around a bound and blindfolded Palestinian woman on Youtube in May, 2010.
In August last year, another Israeli soldier posted smiling pictures of herself with bound Palestinian prisoners on Facebook.
The regime has also reported a few security leaks published on different websites through Israeli soldiers.
Since 2006, the Israeli military has had a special unit tasked with scanning social media websites for what it calls signs of possible security breaches.

Israeli authorities cut off soldiers' access to internet
Facebook profile photo of an Israeli soldier
After a number of controversial posts on Facebook and other websites in recent months, the Israeli military has ordered its commanders to cut off access to the internet for nearly every computer accessed by soldiers.
The move comes after the Israeli Attorney General ordered the investigation of several Israeli Facebook Groups for racist, anti-Arab incitement in January. A number of incidents involving Israeli soldiers posting photos and videos of themselves humiliating and abusing Palestinians while serving in the West Bank and Gaza Strip also surfaced in the last few months.
Corporal Yehuda Battalion posing with a prisoner
In one offending video, Israeli soldiers staged a 'dance video' while on patrol in downtown Hebron, an area rife with tensions and violence between the indigenous Palestinians and a group of Israeli settlers who took over a number of Palestinian homes in the middle of the city over the last fifteen years.
The Israeli military has also charged soldiers with posting classified information, or sharing information with reporters, on several occasions.

The Israeli police, however, continue to have full access to the internet on duty despite recent controversy surrounding their failure to delete racist, offensive comments from their official Facebook page. Some of the comments include death threats against specific detainees, or anti-Muslim and anti-Arab rhetoric, such as "They have to be sprayed like cockroaches;" "Every stinking SOB Muslim who dies is a holiday for me."
Israeli Border Policewoman Shani Sevilia as Stone-Cold Killer
A border police officer recently charged with abusing Palestinian teenagers had posted racist comments against Arabs and offensive photos on her facebook page, calling for attacks against Arabs just before she badly beat a Palestinian youth.
The issue of Facebook has been a contentious one in Israel for years settlers complained to the company two years ago when their location was listed as 'Palestine' and not 'Israel', but Facebook quickly conceded to the complaints, and Brandee Barker, Facebook's director of communications, told settlers that Facebook would be happy to let them list 'Israel' as their location.

Lieutenant-Colonal Gadi [no first name given] was quoted by the Israeli daily Ha'aretz as saying that the soldiers needed to have their internet access cut because The IDF must protect its information in light of the growing threat. The semi-anonymous officer added that Facebook is a strategic resource for Israeli intelligence services, who use it to monitor and infiltrate Palestinian support groups.

Because of his support for Palestinians, his facebook page is deleted
MADRID, (PIC)-- The management of the social networking website facebook has deleted the official page of Brazilian footballer Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior, who plays for the Spanish club Real Madrid only days after expressing his support for the Palestinians and criticism of Israel’s violence towards Palestinian children.
He wrote on his page a few days ago that he sympathises with the Palestinians and that he wished the violence practiced against them by the Israeli occupation to stop and for peace to prevail all over the world.
