US rabbi on probation for money-laundering charge
Syrian-Jewish spiritual leader Rabbi Saul Kassin to pay fine, sentenced to probation after illegally sending money to Israel.
NEW YORK - Rabbi Saul Kassin, a spiritual leader of the Syrian Jewish community in America, was sentenced to two years of probation for illegally sending money to Israel through a charity he operated.
Kassin's sentencing Wednesday culminated a legal saga that dates back to the summer of 2009, when more than 46 individuals -- including Kassin, the chief rabbi of Congregation Shaare Zion in Brooklyn; two rabbis from the Syrian Jewish enclave of Deal, N.J.; and a string of high-ranking elected officials and civil servants -- were brought down in a federal sting.
Citing the rabbi's age, US District Judge Joel Pisano did not give jail time to Kassin, 89, though he fined him $36,750. The sum is in addition to the nearly $370,000 Kassin agreed to give up when he was nabbed in the sting, New Jersey's largest-ever corruption bust.
When Kassin began to profess his innocence, Pisano reminded him that such a display could jeopardize his lenient sentence, The Associated Press reported. Kassin could have received 18 to 24 months in prison.
The AP reported that Kassin appeared frail and confused at the sentencing, requesting that his lawyers clarify the proceedings and lambasting the FBI and the court in a long statement he read aloud.
"You did all this to me under almighty God," Kassin said. "Aggravation, sorrow, many nights I could not sleep."
Kassin pleaded guilty in March to one count of unauthorized money transmitting.
According to the AP, he had used the Magen Israel Society, a charity he controlled, to deposit checks from Solomon Dwek, the son of a prominent Deal rabbi. Kassin then issued checks to other organizations Dwek requested, taking a 10 percent commission.
Dwek cooperated with the FBI after pleading guilty to $50 million in bank fraud, wearing a wire as he presented the illegal deal to Kassin.
Though he had pleaded guilty and came clean about his role in the money laundering, Kassin tried to backtrack at his sentencing, even demanding that the $367,500 he forfeited be returned to him, the AP reported.
"I want that money back, to donate it," Kassin said. "They kept it for two years almost -- it's enough."
Pisano denied the request, telling the rabbi he ultimately bore responsibility for any economic woe that came his charity's way.
About half of the individuals charged in connection with the sting -- dubbed "Bid Rig" by federal authorities -- ultimately pleaded guilty.

'Taliban women': A cover story
Newly-religious women walking around covered head-to-toe in black clothes are growing in numbers. Even six-year-old girls are made to hide their faces. Haredi rabbis finally condemn growing trend.
They arrive there every morning, girls aged six to 10 covered head to toe, their faces hidden behind a veil similar to a hijab. They enter an apartment at the center of Jerusalem, which serves as their school.
Hundreds of people see them walk by, including Education Ministry employees who work nearby. Somehow, though, they never seem to do anything about it.
So far, one has only heard of "Taliban mothers," haredi women covered head to toe, including a headscarf, much like Afghani women living under Taliban rule. But now one finds little girls too, the daughters of these "Taliban mothers," walking around outdoors in full body coverage.
Since no haredi school is willing to let these girls in, they go to improvised schools in Beit Shemesh and Jerusalem founded especially for them by their mothers. Needless to say these schools and the curriculum are not supervised by the Education Ministry.
This phenomenon has raised many eyebrows within the haredi community. "Taliban women" and their daughters are outcasts on haredi streets. They encounter looks of disgust, bullying and constant humiliation.
M., a member of the anti-Zionist Hasidic movement Toldos Aharon, lives in Jerusalem. He said he has seen young men come up to these women trying to pull off their head covers.
"There are guys who will approach a woman and say things like: 'You look like a suicide bomber' or 'I guess your face is ugly if you keep it hidden.' There are also those who spit on them and curse at them, or just badger them with cameras so they'll run away."
'Back to sacred custom'
The fact that most of the "Taliban women" are newly-religious does not help either. "It's unacceptable that that the newly-religious will tell us that our women aren't modest and good enough," a senior haredi businessman explained.
It does make sense however that these women are newly-religious. Extremism is very common amongst people who change their lifestyle in a radical manner, from a secular life to a religious one and vise-versa.
"Similar to those who search for meaning in their lives or feel lost and seek help, these girls are inspired by a dominant figure," said a father of a newly-religious girl who now belongs to a cult. "I personally feel that in both cases it's a matter of exploiting weaknesses, but ultimately my daughter is happy and pleased with the life she has chosen, so I have to accept it."
His daughter, however, sees nothing wrong with her unusual appearance. "I think that seculars, who are used to seeing girls dressed in minimal clothing, are the weird ones," she said. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm following the rules of modesty which are also meant to save men from themselves. A man who sees a woman's body parts is sexually aroused, and this might cause him to commit sin. Even if he doesn't actually sin physically, his impure thoughts are sin in themselves."
But what about little girls? Why do 6-year-olds need to walk around covered head-to-toe? "There are enough men who look at them as sexual objects. Such values must be taught at an early age," she explained.
Husbands of the "Taliban women" usually accept the way their wives dress. "Some of them do it out of weakness and lack of choice, others claim they put up with it because of a higher calling and purity. I think they are simply weak. If we're being honest, haredi men are not involved with what goes on at home. They spend most of their days in their yeshivot."
This past weekend the discourse surrounding "Taliban women" has extended beyond the religious community. Following repeated complaints from both religious and secular residents in Beit Shemesh, who encounter the covered girls on a daily basis, the National Council for the Child has requested the Welfare Ministry to look into the matter and make sure this behavior is not harmful to the girls.
"We don't want to intervene with their style of clothing or education," said the council's director Dr. Yitzhak Kadman. "However it's our job to check whether these kids are being harmed in any way. If you recall, the known 'Taliban mother' incident proves that an extreme lifestyle can also be harmful to the children."
The ultra-Orthodox "Jewish Taliban" cult is one of the most extreme groups ever established in Israel. Established over six years ago, when haredi women tried to fight immodesty in Israel, the group's members decided to wear a robe covering their bodies from the shoulders down.
This cult now has hundreds of members all over the country. Their motto is clear: Cover up as much as you can in the name of modesty.
This initiative was received positively by many haredi circles and was even accompanied by an enthusiastic letter of support signed by Badatz rabbis, the ultra-Orthodox court of justice, and Eda Haredit leader Rabbi Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss.
Slowly but surely more women began joining the cult, covering their heads so only their faces were showing. This turned into a popular trend and in the past three years has turned into full face coverage.
"It all started with three women who covered their entire bodies," said a senior haredi businessman. "Then eight more joined in Jerusalem and 12 in Beit Shemesh, almost all of them newly-religious. Together with their daughters they are a group of about a 100 women. The rest of the 'cult' members expose their faces, and consist of roughly 500 women."
Gradually these girls dropped out or were taken out of haredi schools, prompting the cult women to form their own school system. There are about four schools in Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh.
Film director Anat Zuria ("Purity", "Sentenced to Marriage") has encountered these "Taliban women" while working on one of her films. "Many of them were newly-religious," she said. "They talked about returning to our modest roots, dressing like our mothers from past generations."
The infamous "Taliban mother" who was accused of abusing her seven children also talked to Zuria. "On one occasion she wasn't allowed to speak. She communicated by making sounds. It was surreal. There sits a grown woman making sounds like a dolphin."
This quickly spreading phenomenon upsets the haredi community even more than the rest of the public, because of the basic haredi perception which rules out any changes in clothing, language or lifestyle. According to tradition, the Israelites survived the slavery in Egypt because they "did not alter the way they dress" therefore the dress code cannot be changed even today.
"We can accept young girls who returned to their faith as long as they accept the rules and speak Yiddish," said the businessman. "What worked for our fathers for hundreds of years still works today, and no newly-religious person can change that."
Covered even at home
This anger rapidly turned into real actions of protest against the cult. Thousands of fliers signed by rabbis were posted on the streets.
A Neturei Karta delegation approached haredi rabbis and presented them with findings regarding the "Taliban women." They said these women refused to have sexual intercourse with their husbands or take off their head covers even when they walk around the house or in the mikveh. They were even rumored to forbid contact between brothers and sisters.
The rabbis were convinced. Religious neighborhoods all over Israel were filled with harsh letters condemning the cult. "You must beware not to dress in odd and peculiar clothing (including veils), especially if the husband is against it, because it's also against halacha. All the more so these changes should not be applied in cases of young girls", they wrote.
The same rabbis who once praised the veils, now realize the situation has gotten out of hand. Recently signatures of 13 more rabbis from Beit Shemesh were added to a petition protesting the new dress code.
However, this is more than just another haredi dispute. As this phenomenon
is exposed, including the fact that dozens of young girls are forced to cover their bodies from head to toe when leaving the house by their mothers, it is time for the State and welfare authorities to take a closer look at what is really going on with "Taliban women."

Leading rabbi calls Israelis to prepare to build alleged temple
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- A leading West Bank rabbi said Saturday that the Aqsa Mosque must be taken from Palestinian hold in order to pave the way for the alleged temple.
We must save the site and return it to Israeli ownership; and if we cannot build the temple on grounds of law it does not absolve us from doing what we actually are able of, said Dov Lior, rabbi of the Karyat Arba settlement near Al-Khalil. He is also considered the chief rabbi in the occupied West Bank.
Jews claim the Aqsa Mosque and the Dome Rock were built on the ruins of King Solomon's temple, which they will one day rebuild.
Although we cannot actually build the temple these days, it is certainly our obligation to ready ourselves for the time when the generation can build it, he said during his Saturday sermon that was transmitted to several Jewish websites.
Lior urged followers to raid the mosque firstly by visits. He said intense visits would prompt the government to reset its thinking and stop it from %u201Dplacing the land in the hands of saboteurs%u201D, referring to the Palestinians.
King David meant to build the temple, but he was told, 'you are a man of war, so you are not fit for this'. So he made all preparations and when King Solomon's era came, he built the temple. It is also important at this time to save the site and at least return it to Israeli ownership, he said.

Anti-secular MK to be reinstated
Israel Eichler, who called Israel 'evil regime', seculars 'two-legged animals', to be sworn in to Knesset.
A former Knesset member who once called seculars "a generation of people who look like beasts and behave like two-legged animals" is to be sworn in again Monday.
Israel Eichner is to return to the Knesset as a replacement for MK Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism), in accordance with a rotation deal between the two.
Eichler told Ynet ahead of his reinstatement about the goals he had set for himself, which include "depriving anti-haredi racism of its legitimacy".
"It is disseminated and funded by outside sources in the US and Europe and causes hatred. We will fight this in any way possible, including the discussed parliamentary investigation. Our battle is for maintaining Jewish culture and making sure Israel's soul is not snuffed out," he said.
The former journalist also spoke about his decision to leave the haredi news for a position in politics. "Contrary the way things used to be, when the Knesset ruled and the media criticized, today it is the opposite, and it is entirely unclear whether I will have a greater effect from here than from where I was," he said.
However, Eichner explained, his rabbi had told him to return to the Knesset. "It is a mission I was sent, so I am going," he said.
But the opposition against the MK is great and its leaders, the Hiddush organization for religious freedom and equality, published a report Monday listing many instances in which Eichner berated the secular public and the state.
The report, which the organization has sent to MKs, says Eichner has called Israel "an enemy state", "a historical national disaster", "an evil regime" and a "Jewish ghetto". He also said that "all talk of democracy is just lies and hypocrisy".
On relations between the secular and ultra-Orthodox populations he said that "there is no longer any basis for our being one people", the report adds.
Rabbi and attorney Uri Regev, who heads Hiddush, said that "we must protect Eichler's right to derogate all that is sacred to most of the citizens of this state".
"It's a good thing we live in a modern democracy, which allows us to express such extremist views against the state and democracy in public. However, it is important that we recognize the new MK's attitude towards the state, Zionism, and anyone who isn't ultra-Orthodox, and remember the hostile attitude of United Torah Judaism towards the government of which it is a member," Regev said.
But Eichler stood his ground. "Hiddush receives money from outside sources in order to persecute the haredi public and its representatives. This is their job, as they declare, and that is why they persecute us. There is nothing new in this," he said in response.

Police issue arrest warrant for Rabbi Dov Lior
Kiryat Arba rabbi's refusal to report for incitement investigation prompts arrest warrant. Settlers' committee slams 'slap in the face,' Peace Now says 'too little too late'.
The police issued an arrest warrant for the rabbi of Kiryat Arba, Dov Lior, after he refused to report for an inquiry. http://bit.ly/hTzZoi
Police are investigating Rabbi Lior and other rabbis over suspicions of incitement in connection with the publication of the book Torat Hamelech, which endorses the murder of gentiles.
Last summer Lior addressed the issue of the investigation against him and said that "rabbis are elected representatives, chosen to express the Torah's knowledge. They must share the halachic dictate and not fear the repercussions." Lior was summoned by the police a number of times but following his refusal to turn up for the investigation, he received the warrant at his home.
The arrest warrant hasn't made much of an impression on the rabbi, who made it clear that his refusal to report for the police investigation stands. The Jewish community in Hebron was angered by the warrant and is planning protest measures, beginning with a demonstration on Tuesday.
"This is a declaration of war from the State Prosecution against the Jewish faith and," charged the Samaria and Binyamin Settler Committee. "This warrant is a slap in the face of the Jewish people past and present.
"It is a foolish act meant to deter rabbis from expressing their religious opinion. We call on all those who care about the religious character of their country to get up and oppose bodily if necessary - this wildly anti-Jewish move."
In contrast, the Secretary General of Peace Now said the warrant was "too little too late." According to Yariv Oppenheimer, "when racism runs wild in the streets the state must arrest and indict dozens of rabbis, heads of organizations and public figures who preach against renting apartments to Arabs and against employing them.
The Neemanei Torah Va'Avoda movement said in response that "the needless stubbornness at the beginning of this affair in refusing to cooperate with law enforcement authorities led us to places that no one wants to get to.
"Israel's rabbis must respect the laws of the land like any citizen in Israel; this commitment receives halachic backing in the Talmudic principle of Dina DeMalchuta Dina, which is why refusal to cooperate with law enforcement authorities not only creates the impression that some citizens are above the law, it is also against Jewish Law.
"At the same time, those same law enforcement authorities' actions merit self-examination over whether they treat public figures from the left and right ends of the political spectrum equally."

Hebron rabbi: No 'little official at the Justice Ministry' will tell me what to do
rabbi, Dov Lior
About 2,000 people gathered in Kiryat Arba near Hebron yesterday in a rally of support for the community's rabbi, Dov Lior, against whom an arrest warrant was issued. The warrant was issued after Lior refused to appear for questioning on his endorsement of the book "Torat Hamelech," which justifies killing non-Jews.
"If the state declares that rabbis are not allowed to voice a political opinion, it will be like in the Soviet Union, where there were commissars who said what was allowed and what was forbidden," Lior said at the rally. "It is inconceivable that a little official in the Justice Ministry can say what rabbis are permitted to do."
MK Michael Ben Ari (National Union ) said: "Even the attorney general, who is in charge of the rule of law, was investigated for employing a foreign worker."
He added: "Issuing an arrest warrant against a great Torah figure of such magnitude, when all this is about is the backing he gave to a book, is a crossing of a red line, McCarthyism ... Would they have behaved this way against an academic of the left?"
Rabbi Eliezer Waldman, a settlement leader and former Knesset member, said the rally was to "protest the desecration of the soul of the State of Israel. Rabbis are the soul of the state. Their dignity must not be harmed."
The commander of the Hebron police came to Lior's home a few days ago and told him an arrest warrant had been issued. The rabbi replied that he "would not take part in the dishonoring of the Torah" and that he would not show up on his own volition for questioning by the police, which he claimed was aimed at "silencing rabbis."
In November 2009, Rabbis Yitzhak Shapira and Yosef Eliztur published "Torat Hamelech" which discusses the conditions under which it is permissible to kill a non-Jew. After the book's publication, a criminal investigation was launched against the two. Rabbi Yosef Ginsburg, of Od Yosef Hai Yeshiva, who approved the book in a foreword, was also questioned.
In August 2010, the police sought to question Lior and another rabbi, Yaakov Yosef, (a former Shas MK ) who had also endorsed the book, on suspicions of racism and incitement. The two refused to be questions, and wrote in a letter that the Torah is not subservient to police investigations.

Chief West Bank rabbi issues ruling that legalizes killing Arabs
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- The chief rabbi of the Kiryat Arba has ruled it legal to kill all Gentiles (non-Jews) without qualification.
The ruling by Dov Lior was derived from other major Israeli rabbis who hold it permissible to kill Arabs without cause.
Israeli police have publicly arrested Lior, but will likely release him soon as it usually does in similar cases. But the arrest has raised the ire of ministers in Netanyahu's government.
Netanyahu's government showed tacit approval of the racial ruling when Israeli Minister of Interior Yitzhak Aharonovitch called the consequent arrest a mistake by the Al-Khalil police chief.
Lior made headlines last week when he called for a launch in preparations to build the alleged temple.

Haifa chief rabbi to be tried for bribery
Rabbi Shear Yashuv Cohen suspected of taking part in scheme that gave 1,500 security officers fake rabbi titles, swindling State out of millions.
Haifa Chief Rabbi Shear Yashuv Cohen was summoned for a hearing by the Jerusalem District's Prosecutor's Office on Thursday over alleged acts of bribery and falsifying corporate documents.
Cohen is suspected of taking part in the 'Rabbi Affair,' in which false rabbi titles were given to security forces personnel. With the cooperation of the Chief Rabbinate Examinations Department, senior rabbis issued fake diplomas stating that that the recipients completed five years of higher religious education, even though they only completed one or two years of limited studies.
The recipients, who were employed by the police, army and Shin Bet, used the certificates to obtain raises. About 1,500 police and IDF officers participated in the scheme. Anywhere between NIS 2,000-4,000 ($544-1088) were added to their monthly wages, swindling the State out of hundreds of millions of shekels.
Case reopened
Cohen was investigated for taking part in the illegal activity following the unearthing of the affair in 2008. The suspicions against him touched upon a secondary case involving Ariel College, which Cohen headed. Despite the evidentiary basis that was established against him, the prosecution decided to close the case after Cohen announced he will resign from his post as chief rabbi of Haifa, and will no longer serve in public positions.
The prosecution was informed recently that the rabbi has remained in his post, and continues to serve in other public positions despite his pledge. Therefore, the prosecution decided to summon him for a hearing, after which charges will be filed against him.
"There aren't and never have been any grounds to try Rabbi Shear Yashuv Cohen in a criminal court," Cohen's attorney, Yaron Kostelitz, told Ynet. "It's unfortunate that the prosecution summons him again for a hearing after closing the case against him over a year ago."

70 rabbis: Arrest warrant a disgrace
Rabbi Dov Lior
Dozens of Religious Zionist leaders sign petition addressed to prime minister against 'attempt to block rabbis' freedom of expression through severe, unacceptable, anti-democratic measures'.
Some 70 leading Zionist-religious rabbis - including city rabbis, yeshiva chiefs and educators - issued a petition Thursday protesting the arrest warrant take out against Rabbi Dov Lior following his refusal to report to a police inquiry in the "King's Torah" affair.
"We see this as a disgrace towards the torah and those who follow it," the petition stated. "This is an attempt to block the rabbis' freedom of expression through severe, unacceptable and anti-democratic measures."
Rabbi Haim Drukman. Signed petition
The signatories represent a wide range of influential rabbis in the Zionist-religious society, including: Kiryat Shmona Chief Rabbi Zephaniah Drori, The head of the Bnei Akiva yeshivas and Israel's conversion system Rabbi Haim Drukman, the head of the Ramat Gan hesder yeshiva Rabbi Yehoshua Shapira, Har Bracha's rabbi Eliezer Melamed, Elon Moreh's rabbi and head of the yeshiva there, Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, head of the 'Tzohar' organization Rabbi David Stav and others.
Some of the signatories are divided in their opinions over the book at the center of the affair. Some agree and some disagree with the stance which embroiled Rabbi Lior in the affair. "Signing this petition should in no way be seen as an acceptance of the 'Torat Hamelech' book," the petition stressed.
According to the rabbis, the actions carried out against the rabbis for offences related to freedom of expression were never taken against leftist intellectuals, in spite of their "extreme expressions against the State and its citizens," they wrote.
Rabbi David Stav -also signedThey called upon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Justice Minister Yaakov Ne'eman to "act immediately to revoke the humiliating warrant," ministers and Knesset Members are also called upon to "use all their might to seek the abandonment of this evil."
On Monday, police issued an arrest warrant for the rabbi of Kiryat Arba, after he refused to report for a police inquiry investigating suspicions of incitement in connection with the publication of "King's Torah" in August. http://bit.ly/fLA0TB
Earlier this week, some of the rabbis who signed the petition condemned the arrest warrant. Rabbi Drukman called the warrant "outrageous" and said that if Rabbi Lior was indeed arrested police should prepare another detention cell for him.
"Torat Hamelech" a halachic review on subjects concerning the killing non-Jews was written by the head of the Yitzhar yeshiva Rabbi Yitzhak Shapira and one of the yeshiva's leading rabbis, Yosef Elizur.

Israeli rabbi 'sexually abused children'
Rabbi Mordechai (Moti) Elon
An Israeli Rabbi has been summoned by the East al-Quds (Jerusalem) prosecutor's office for a pre-indictment hearing on allegations that he sexually harassed two minors on several occasions.
The prosecutor's office summoned Rabbi Mordechai (Moti) Elon for committing sexual offenses against two minors in 2003 and 2005, Ha'aretz reported Thursday.
The allegations against Elon came to light one year ago after Takana, a national religious rabbinical forum that investigates allegations of sexual abuse in the religious community, posted a message on its website demanding that Elon step down from all rabbinical, teaching and community responsibilities, as he is a threat to the public.
In August 2010, the police said that they had enough evidence to accuse Elon of forcibly carrying out sexual offences against one minor. A young man testified that from 2005 to 2006, when he was still a minor, Elon forcibly committed indecent acts against him, the police said.
During further investigations, the police said, another victim had come forth and complained about Elon for sexually abusing him when he was still a minor.
The prosecutor's office said they had sent a letter to Rabbi Elon's lawyers on Thursday summoning Elon for a hearing, which will help decide whether to indict him on charges of sexual offenses against two underage plaintiffs.

Jew-hatred in Holland
Dutch government won`t pay for security of Jews, while anti-Semitism continues to grow.
The Dutch government continues to refuse to pay for the security of its threatened Jewish citizens. The Jewish community has stated on various occasions that it is the only group in society which cannot organize activities without including guards or other security measures.
The other week during a debate in a parliamentary commission on the current anti-Semitism in the Netherlands, several MPs asked the Dutch government to pay for the Jews security. However, Minister of Security and Justice Ivo Opstelten stuck to the position of his predecessors saying that security is the responsibility of the Jewish community itself and if necessary, of the local authorities. The latter are rarely willing to pay for these expenses.
The Dutch Parliament has existed for almost 200 years. The first plenary meeting ever on contemporary anti-Semitism took place last June after a series of articles in the media about anti-Semitic incidents. One article in the prominent daily NRC Handelsblad was titled: Anti-Semitism is more than an incident. It is normal. The fact that a second parliamentary meeting was called for a few months later is a sign that nothing has been solved.
The main targets of anti-Semitic harassment in public are a small number of Jews who are recognizably attired as such. In past weeks, several newspapers have reported that Rabbi Raph Evers, the head of the Dutch Jewish Seminary, no longer travels on public transportation because of the harassment he encounters there. He walks out on the street as little as possible. Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs is also frequently insulted in public. His home is fitted with an alarm system which links him directly to the police. Jacobs says 35 year ago, no one insulted him.
What were not mentioned in the Dutch media are the experiences of those Jews who had been repeatedly harassed and now live elsewhere. One Dutch Jewish youngster living in Jerusalem told me that while he was a student at Amsterdam University, he earned a living working in a supermarket in the center of town. He wore a small yarmulke. He was insulted at work on the average twice a week with calls like: cancer-Jew of Hamas Hamas, Jews to the gas. All of this harassment came from customers of Moroccan ethnicity.
I also interviewed another youngster now living in Jerusalem, who wears ultra-Orthodox garb. A few months ago he visited his parents in the Netherlands. When he changed trains after arriving from Belgium at the Dutch border station Rozendaal, he was immediately shouted at in English by a man with a heavy Dutch accent: You killed Jesus. At his arrival in Arnhem, where he exited the station through the back door, he was insulted as well. The same happened when he left from the same station. During his stay in The Netherlands he hardly left his parents home.
Non-selective immigration policy
Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs. Frequently insulted in public
Only limited parts of the Dutch Jewish community encounter substantial anti-Semitism. Besides the aforementioned harassment of recognizably dressed Jews, it impacts mainly on Jewish children in schools and through insults in the workplace. The Jewish community now explicitly blames the disproportionately large role in anti-Semitic incidents of Muslims who account for six percent of the population. The most problematic elements come from the Moroccan, and to a lesser extent, Turkish community.
Over the past decades, Dutch governments have non-selectively allowed in 1.6 million non-Western immigrants, about 10% of the population. Of these, one million originate in Muslim countries where anti-Semitism is far stronger than in the Netherlands. It is thus not surprising that the percentage of anti-Semites among these immigrants is substantially higher than among the local Dutch population. One could put it differently: the Dutch government has for many years followed an anti-Semitism-promoting immigration policy.
It would be desirable to undertake a detailed poll on anti-Semitism among Muslim immigrants as compared to the autochthonous population. One could then also analyze to what extent this anti-Semitism is fueled by families, mosques, schools, friends, or foreign incitement. This would be very useful in the battle against one of the main sources of anti-Semitism. Such an investigation would be, however, far too big a betrayal of Dutch taboos.
Last week`s parliamentary debate had its origin in the media discussion engendered by my book The Decay: Jews in a Rudderless Netherlands. It quoted senior Dutch politician and former EU commissioner Frits Bolkestein stating that recognizable Jews should advise their children to leave for the United States or Israel.
However, the book did not focus on anti-Semitism. It had two major themes. The first one, that Jews have a symbolic importance in the Netherlands which goes far beyond the real importance of the community, and the second was that by watching the interaction of the Jewish community and Dutch society at large, one obtains a prism on many aspects of the functioning and problems of Dutch society.
The recent discussions and debates have borne these two points out once more. Minister Opstelten stated that there would be zero tolerance for anti-Semitic incidents and registration of incidents at school. However, the Dutch police are unlikely to be able to become more efficient in the coming months. It is also unlikely that recognizable Jews can soon walk unhindered in certain parts of the country in the near future.
Approximately 10 years ago, there were major inquiries and debates in Dutch society about government failures of post-war restitution of Jewish assets looted in the Holocaust. One of the many criticisms about the Dutch government`s handling of the situation was that it had wrongly charged the surviving Jews for the administrative services involved in returning what was looted from them because the Dutch government could not protect them during the occupation.
A commission of inquiry said that this was a public duty and thus needed to be provided free of charge.
One wonders whether in the future, investigators will conclude that the Dutch government has misbehaved against the Jews once again by failing to pay for their protection and that of their institutions, which is also, clearly, a public duty.
Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld has published nineteen books, several of which deal with European anti-Semitism

Pray in mosque, rabbi rules
In response to concerned traveler who feels he cant concentrate on prayers at airport, Rabbi Efrati says best option is to go to Muslim house of prayer.
"It would be better to pray in a mosque and do so with meaning and after the sun rises, rather than at home, at dawn or at the airport and without meaning," Rabbi Baruch Efrati determined recently in a response posted on the Kipa website recently.
The surprising ruling came in response to a question posed by a web surfer living abroad who travels frequently for work purposes: "Most of the time the flights leave very early in the morning. I manage to put on tefilin at home after daybreak, but I dont have time to wait until I can complete morning prayers," he stated.
"On the other hand, if I pray at the airport I feel extremely uncomfortable, because people stare and I find it hard to focus on my prayers."
He wished to know how to act and Rabbi Efrati had a surprising response: "Some airports in Europe and Asia have mosques, and they are usually empty of people who are not praying and so it is quiet," he noted and suggested that the traveler inquire at the airport.
"Of course, this solution isnt perfect," the rabbi added, "but it is the best option. There is no prohibition on praying in mosques (apart for the Rans - Rabbi Nissim ben Reuven ruling, which was not accepted)."
Rabbi Efrati noted that an example was the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, which has a mosque.
Either way, the rabbi ruled that if the traveler has trouble praying with meaning in the airport he shouldnt pray there. In addition, he stressed that praying in churches was completely and strictly forbidden. In fact, it is forbidden to step into a church, he said.

Rabbis: Lior should be questioned
Rabbi Dov Lior
Senior religious figures refuse to sign petition supporting Kiryat Arba rabbi, instead insist he undergo investigation in Kings Torah affair as he is a civil servant.
Some 70 leading Zionist Religious rabbis - including city rabbis, yeshiva chiefs and educators - issued a petition Thursday protesting the arrest warrant against Rabbi Dov Lior following his refusal to report to a police inquiry in the "Kings Torah" affair. But Ynet has learned that some rabbis refused to sign the petition and feel that Lior should be investigated. http://bit.ly/ih72oe
A few senior Zionist Religious rabbis are missing from the list, including chief rabbi of Ramat Gan and Ramat Gan Yeshiva Head Yaakov Ariel, Har Etzion Yeshiva Head Aharon Lichtenstein, and Birkat Moshe Yeshiva Head in Ma`ale Adumim Rabbi Dr. Nahum Eliezer Rabinovich.
Other rabbis which refused to sign their name to the petition were Hesder Petah Tikva Yeshiva Head Rabbi Yuval Sherlo, Otniel Yeshiva Head Rabbi Binyamin Kalmanzon, Gush Etzion Yeshiva Co-Heads Rabbi Yaaqov Medan and Rabbi Baruch Gigi and more.
Keeping quiet
Ramat Gan Yeshiva Head Yaakov Ariel. Refused to sign.
An official close to the issue at hand told Ynet that some rabbis do not agree with the stance of the petition but they "don't want to make it into a big deal" and so they avoid mentioning it to the public or the media.
The official also explained that according to the rabbis that refused to sign the petition you cannot compare a local rabbi who works for the State, to an academic man, to the freedom of speech, and therefore Rabbi Dov Lior must report for investigation.
"We see this as a disgrace towards the torah and those who follow it," the petition stated. "This is an attempt to block the rabbis freedom of expression through severe, unacceptable and anti-democratic measures."
The signatories represent a wide range of influential rabbis in the Zionist-religious society, including: Kiryat Shmona Chief Rabbi Zephaniah Drori, The head of the Bnei Akiva yeshivas and Israels conversion system Rabbi Haim Drukman, the head of the Ramat Gan hesder yeshiva Rabbi Yehoshua Shapira, Har Bracha s rabbi Eliezer Melamed, Elon Morehs rabbi and head of the yeshiva there, Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, head of the Tzohar organization Rabbi David Stav and others.

Drivers beware! Rabbinic grave-hopping ahead
Rabbi Eliezer Berland
Bratslav Hasidim pursuing their mysterious rabbi on nighttime visits to graves have been recklessly speeding and running red lights.
Nighttime drivers in the north in recent weeks have encountered dozens of cars traveling at high speeds in total disregard of traffic lights and highway signs. In three instances, the cars have either hit one another or were damaged going off the side of the road, witnesses said.
It now appears this was all organized by the Shuvu Banim Bratslav Hasidic community in pursuit of the movements mysterious Rabbi Eliezer Berland, who has been making a series of nighttime visits to the graves of righteous men (tzadikim ) in the north. The rabbi has encouraged his followers to chase after him.
The activities peaked last week on the night between Thursday and Friday, when the rabbi was pursued by dozens of cars as well as three buses - a crowd of 800 to 1,000 people in total. Several participants told Haaretz with pride about their hot pursuit of the rabbi, through red lights and stop signs, at speeds reaching 140 kilometers per hour on roads where the speed limit is 80.
The father of one yeshiva student said his son was involved in an accident while pursuing the rabbi and was injured. The father called for the practice to be stopped before someone is killed.
Local police said they are unaware of the practice, which has not resulted in any serious injuries so far.
On Saturday night, Berland announced via an associate, Betar Ilit Mayor Meir Rubinstein, that he has stopped the nighttime visits to the graves. But the decision apparently had no connection to the light injuries sustained in accidents in pursuit of the rabbi. Instead, it was attributed to the fact that the practice was disrupting students study routines.
But some students told Haaretz that they are hoping for a change of heart on the rabbi s part.
Berland surrounded by students in Tiberias last week.
The students said the chase was actually meant to contribute to calm and stability in the Shuvu Banim community, which has experienced a lot of turmoil recently. The peak of the instability came about two months ago, when the 73-year-old rabbi instigated a sort of coup in his community, which is affiliated with the Bratslav Hasidim but as a practical matter is independent.
The rabbi announced the ouster of his son Nachman and his grandson Natan, who had been in charge of all aspects of the community, as well as of contacts between the rabbi and the outside world. He also appointed new management for the community s nonprofit organizations and institutions.
Berland said he had been "imprisoned" by his associates for years and had now been set free. Subsequently, details emerged of their control over the rabbi s schedule and the aggressive security they maintained around him, as well as of the role of his wife.
But since then, most of the deposed members of the community s leadership have been returned to their positions, and the community is now attempting to return to normal.
Meanwhile, the rabbi and his wife left their home in Jerusalem, apparently temporarily, for an apartment in Tiberias, from which Berland has been setting out to visit the graves. The rabbi has a longstanding practice of visiting graves of tzadikim, and a whole mythology has sprung up over his alleged secret visits to graves in Bethlehem, Hebron and Nablus. Recently, he apparently decided to take advantage of his new-found freedom to do the same in the north.

Carmel fire as punishment?
Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv
Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, an unconventional Lithuanian leader who is believed to have mystic powers, offered a different explanation. "It is evident that many unnatural things are happening," he said. "People have come to me and said that it's 'Gog and Magog'. We cannot know. But it's probable that any unrest that God creates shows that the Messiah is coming, and that we must begin to prepare for it and become stronger."
Another prominent rabbi, Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz, is certain that God is causing the turmoil in order to put the people in their place.
"God goes and humiliates (those feeling) sinful pride," he said. "At first there was this little fire here, and a state that thought that it is big and strong suddenly needed help from the entire world. Not a war, nothing special, just a small fire.
"When they continued to think that they are smart, and see everything and understand what to do and how to do it, God came and disturbed the nations, and here they are, scared again because they could not predict such a big thing, and again they do not know what to do," he added. "God is laughing at them, waiting to see when they will understand and become wiser."
The one who does not see that God is running the world, Lefkowitz concluded, is not evil, but a fool.

'Arab unrest signals Messiah's coming'
Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky
Are Arab leaders being punished for religious persecution? Prominent rabbis offer explanations for Mideast uprisings.
Prominent rabbis from the Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox sector have offered their own curious interpretations for the upheaval that is spreading through the Middle East, stating that the events are a clear proof that a higher power is at work.
The cellular portal Haredim, which offered a collection of responses on the matter, quoted Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, http://bit.ly/eZ0Eak the leader of the ultra-Orthodox Lithuanian sector in Bnei Brak, as blaming the instability in the region on contemptuous attitudes towards Torah study.
"Recently it appears that there is a powerful effort to destroy and agitate the world of the Torah, through various attempts to prosecute kollels and yeshiva students," Steinman said. "When you try to agitate the world of the Torah, God agitates the world."
Steinman explained that the sages of the Talmud teach that there is a connection between Torah study and the existence of the world.
"God does great and strange things in the world, to make them deal with the (disasters) instead of looking for ways to mind those observing the Torah and the mitzvot," he said. "Because if they don't study, it will continue to move closer to us."
