Israeli soldier shoots photographer
An Israeli soldier has deliberately shot Palestinian photographer Mohammad Othman as he was covering protests in the Gaza Strip, says Reporters Without Borders.
The group said on Tuesday that Othman was clearly identifiable as a journalist at the time of the shooting and was deliberately targeted on Sunday.
The photographer was covering demonstrations near the Erez crossing in northern Gaza Strip.
On Sunday, thousands of Palestinians staged protests to mark the anniversary of the Nakba Day or day of the catastrophe, May 15, 1948, when Palestine was occupied by Israel.
Israeli Apache helicopters and F-16 fighter planes flew over the demonstrators, whereas troops fired tank shells near marching protesters on the border crossing.
Medical sources and Othman's family told AFP on Tuesday that he was still in hospital in a "critical but stable" condition.
"He underwent an operation early this morning to remove a piece of shrapnel from his spine," said Adham Abu Selmiya, a spokesman for the medical services in Gaza.
A doctor said the 26-year-old Othman was shot in the arm and was hit in the chest by shrapnel, which entered his lungs and spine.

IOF troops storm Wadi Qana, block entry of farmers
SALFIT, (PIC)-- Israeli occupation forces (IOF) stormed the Qadi Qana region near Salfit and expelled farmers from it after declaring it a closed military zone.
Nazmi Salman, the Deir Estiya village council head, said in a press release on Tuesday that the soldiers occupied the valley and forced the farmers out of it.
He added that he went to the soldiers to ask them for the military order but they refused to show it.
Wadi Qana is located on eight mountains and surrounded by nine Jewish settlements that distorted the valley's features and confiscated almost all of its fertile land leaving only tens of dunums to the rightful Palestinian owners, which are also the target of constant settlers' attacks.

Israeli forces, tanks cross into Gaza
Israeli forces backed by tanks and bulldozers have crossed into the Gaza Strip, destroying Palestinian farmlands in north of the enclave.
Israeli soldiers apparently entered the Palestinian territory from Karni crossing on Wednesday and advanced hundreds of meters toward the east of Gaza City.
According to Press TV's correspondent in Gaza, Israeli soldiers dug a series of holes in the area and filled them with explosives.
Israeli soldiers then blew up the explosives, causing loud explosions in the area, our correspondent added.
Israeli officials claim that the troops were searching and destroying "possible tunnels" in the area that could be used by Palestinian resistance fighters to enter Israeli posts and capture Israeli soldiers.
But analysts believe the Israeli attack aimed at provoking Palestinian fighters into firing on Israeli troops, which could have escalated the situation.
It was the first Israeli attack on Gaza after the two main Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah, signed a unity deal.
Israel has repeatedly voiced anger at the reconciliation accord signed between the two Palestinian groups which aimed at forming a Palestinian unity government.
Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Fatah which rules the West Bank, have been at odds since the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary elections in January 2006.
Differences between the rival groups peaked in June 2007 when Hamas took over the Gaza Strip in a bid to "foil a coup plot" by some Fatah elements.
Fatah in response sacked the Hamas government and set up a parallel cabinet in Ramallah.

34 Palestinians abducted, teen shot in East Jerusalem protests
In protests against Israeli settlement expansion in the Silwan and Ras al-Amud neighborhoods of East Jerusalem Friday, Israeli police assaulted demonstrators with rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas, abducting 34 and shooting a 17-year old with live ammunition.
Israeli sources reported that three police officers were slightly injured when they were hit by stones thrown by Palestinian youth. According to the Israeli police spokesperson, the 34 abductees were arrested for disturbing the peace.
The neighborhoods of Silwan and Ras al-Amud have become centers of non-violent protest in East Jerusalem in the last two years, after the Israeli Jerusalem municipality announced a plan to cleanse the neighborhoods of their existing Palestinian residents in order to build a biblical theme park and replace existing homes with Jewish-only housing developments.
To that end, hundreds of demolition orders have been issued by Israeli authorities to Palestinian homeowners in these neighborhoods, and dozens of homes have already been demolished by Israeli forces.
Protest encampments have been established by Palestinians whose homes have been destroyed or taken over by Israeli settlers, and hundreds of Israeli and international supporters have joined the encampments and protests to call for an end to the takeover of East Jerusalem neighborhoods in violation of international law and signed agreements.
The protests on Friday focused on the 43rd anniversary of the Nakba (Catastrophe), which will be on May 15th. This is the day that Palestinians mourn the creation of the state of Israel on Palestinian land in 1948. Israeli historians have documented the 1948 cleansing of 443 Palestinian villages in what is now Israel, creating 750,000 refugees at that time, whose numbers have grown in subsequent decades.

Clashes rage near Qalandiya, 40 seriously injured
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Violent clashes broke out at the Qalandiya checkpoint between Ramallah and Jerusalem Sunday, as Palestinians marched in the area demanding the right of return for refugees exiled in 1948.
Marching to the military installment, teenagers hurled stones, and troops responded with tear gas and rubber bullets in the morning, with later reports saying live fire was being used.
Estimates put the number of protesters close to a thousand, and witnesses said young men were attempting to take down parts of Israel's separation wall at Qalandiya, where it is built more than five kilometers into Palestinian territory.
Black smoke billowed from tires dragged toward the checkpoint from the refugee camp, by young men whose faces were covered, making their way through clouds of tear gas.
Medics said 55 were evacuated from the protest in ambulance, and witnesses estimated six had been detained. Medics told AFP that at least one was badly injured, hit in the head with a rubber-coated bullet.
A doctor with the Palestinian Authority's Civil Defense Crews told Ma'an that 250 had been treated for injuries and tear-gas inhalation, noting 40 had been marked as seriously injured from bullet wounds.
The air at Qalandiya was thick with tear gas, which permeated through the adjacent Qalandiya refugee camp, prompting parents to keep young children indoors.
Treating an 80-year-old woman from the adjacent refugee camp, medics told Ma'an the tear-gas being used was different from the regular variety used by the military, and had caused at least 20 to go into seizures, with about half of those losing consciousness for at least half an hour.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said there were "around 200 people who were engaged in rioting" with border police using riot dispersal means to try and break up the disturbance.
In Ramallah's city center, Palestinians demanding the right of return for refugees held banners and waved flags. One large banner, shaped as a postcard, read:
Dear Haifa,
We are returning.

Israel's general police commander Yohanan Danino told Israel Radio that officers would detain rioters.
Israeli police are on high alert, and 10,000 officers and border guards will be deployed in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
"We have mobilized thousands of police officers who are deployed in sensitive areas, particularly in Jerusalem and in the Wadi Ara area," spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said, referring to a northern area near Haifa which has a large population of Palestinians.
"Our forces have been placed on high alert in order to allow the planned events to go ahead, but we will not tolerate any violation of public order," Rosenfeld added.
Overnight, police arrested 13 Palestinians following demonstrations in occupied East Jerusalem, raising to 63 the total number arrested since Friday, he said, adding that eight police had been injured.

Palestinians vow to continue resistance
Ahead of the 63rd anniversary of the occupation of Palestine, members of different Palestinian groups say they will continue their struggles to achieve liberation from Israel.
The Palestinian people will continue their struggle and resistance until their entire homeland is liberated, and they achieve their right to return, Maher al-Taher, a member of the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine, told Press TV.
On the 63rd anniversary of the Day of Nakba (catastrophe) when the Zionist movement committed one of the ugliest crimes, we have a message to the world that the Palestinian people, who lived for thousands of years on their motherland, will not give up even a small part of their lands, he added.
Khalid Abdul Majeed, secretary general of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front, said the occasion is commemorated amid big developments and changes in the region.
He also pointed to the conspiracy on the Palestinian cause through the American-Israeli vision to restrict the Palestinian people and their rights.
On this anniversary, we remember the destruction of hundreds of Palestinian towns and villages in addition to deporting hundreds of thousands [of Palestinians] from their own lands. The Palestinian refugees stress their right to return, said Izzat al-Rishq, a member of Hamas Political Bureau.
The anniversary of the occupation of Palestine by the Israeli army and the expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 is known as the Day of Nakba.

Meanwhile, Israeli police arrested a Palestinian youth in Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on Monday after managing to cross the border from Syria among hundreds others who were marching on the Nakba anniversary. They were returned to Syria with the exception of a few.
It said in a statement that policemen arrested the 30-year-old youth while in a taxicab en route to Jerusalem. It added that the Jerusalemite driver was also detained.
The Israeli occupation police and border police intensified presence in the Golan and installed roadblocks on the outskirts of Majdal Shams to apprehend those who remained behind and did not return to Syria.

Several injured in Jordan Nakba protest
A number of people have been reportedly injured as Jordanian police clashed with demonstrators trying to approach Jordan's border with the West Bank.
Police used batons and fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, some of whom tried to pick up the canisters and hurl them back towards the police. In the ensuing clashes, a number of people were injured, AP reported.
The protests were held on Sunday in solidarity with the Palestinians to mark the anniversary of the 1948 occupation of Palestine by Israeli forces.
Palestinians refer to May 15, 1948, as the Nakba or catastrophe in British-mandate Palestine.
More than 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homeland to the West Bank and Gaza Strip and other countries in the world.
Thousands of Jordanian protesters rallied to show support for Palestinian refugees' right to return to their homes forcefully taken by Israeli occupying regime back in 1948.
Waving Palestinian flags, protesters gathered at the Al-Karameh border crossing, a few hundred meters from the border, and chanted slogans in favor of the Palestinians.
However, they were barred from reaching the crossing point on the Jordan River for a second day in a row.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops clashed with Arab protesters along three border crossings on Sunday leaving at least 15 people dead and dozens more wounded, reports say.
