Father recalls son gunned down after ceasefire
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The day before his death, Maher Rajailah asked if his father could write a will for him. But he didn't actually believe he was going to die, not at 23.
"We were joking about it," his mother says, recalling the supposed ceasefire Israel had announced a day earlier on Jan. 17, 2009. Families were returning to their lands because they thought it was safe.
Maher's father Abdel Azim went to his fields, east of Khan Younis, to keep an eye on his sons. "It was calm so I felt comfortable and stayed there," he told the Palestinian Center of Human Rights.
"Suddenly one of the jeeps on the border stopped and bullet after bullet was fired."
Maher was shot in his arm and chest and taken to hospital under heavy gunfire. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
"I wish that they took all the pieces of our lands and Maher would still be alive," says Abdel Azim.
"My wife suffered from two strokes since he was killed. Since the incident I suffer from heart problems. We cannot forget him and our suffering is continuous. We remember him when we see his clothes, his room, and everything that he used around the house."
"My children also still experience a lot of fear. Dowlat sometimes puts her hands over her ears when she hears planes and says 'help me, father.' She is 24 years old and afraid in the dark."
The family owns orange and olive groves close to the border, but Israel has repeatedly bulldozed the land and fires at farmers in the area.
"Before the offensive we used to go to our land regularly, stay up late at night, and have barbeques there," says Abdel Azim.
"If we try to access it they would fire at us. Those fields were cultivated with 50 year old olive trees.”
On Wednesday, Israeli forces killed a man and a teenager in Beit Hanoun near Gaza's northern border with Israel. Medics said they were laying down bird traps in the area.
Abdel Azim doesn't see any signs of improvement in the future. "I worry about other wars that might come and don’t feel safe."
As for his hopes, he says: "I hope that I will be able to live freely and safely, that the occupation will come to an end, and that we can travel freely. That’s all that we need."
PCHR submitted a complaint to Israeli authorities on behalf of the Abu Rujailah family on Nov. 8, 2009 but has yet to receive a response.
The Gaza-based rights organization has filed complaints on behalf of 1,046 victims of Israel's Operation Cast Lead offensive.
It has only received substantive responses to four cases.

This 39-page report details six incidents resulting in 29 civilian deaths, among them eight children. Human Rights Watch found that Israeli forces failed to take all feasible precautions to verify that these targets were combatants, as required by the laws of war, or that they failed to distinguish between combatants and civilians. Israeli and Palestinian human rights groups have reported a total of 42 drone attacks that killed civilians, 87 in all, during the fighting in December 2008 and January 2009.

Mazen Ahmed Muhammad Matr, 15 - `Abdullah Muhammad Hamdan Abu Rock, 16
Mazan: Place of Death: At his home, Jabalia north Camp. Cause of Death: mistaking an Israeli bomb for a toy; Mazen took the toy and it blew up in his face.
Details of the last hours:
When the sound of explosions stopped for a while, streams of Gazan men went out to check the stricken areas. The 15-year old Mazen joined the stream to share in the survey. He found a small object of the Israeli remains, which he took to explore later at home.
At home, Mazen started to examine the small object and within seconds it blew up in his face. His blood covered the rug. His mother was not at home then. She had gone to mourn a friend, in Jabalia camp. Mazen’s brothers were in the house, but none of them were hurt.
His mother, recalls Mazen’s manners, "Not only Mazen helped his family but also he used to quickly give a hand to anybody who asked for help. When water was cut in our neighborhood, Mazen helped fill the reservoir manually."
"Mazen memorized four parts of the Noble Qur'an and loved to stay at the mosque for long times", the sad mother adds.
Mazen was a third-grade student at a preparatory school. Mazen excelled in football owing this to his tall and thin body. He was a member of his school team. He loved to play football so much without feeling exhausted or bored.
"In his spare time, Mazen, also, used to spend his time at home in front of his computer and competing with his brothers in the computer games.", his mother recalls.

`Abdullah: Place of Injury or Death: Direct bombing nearby his house when he was escapingfor his life.
Cause of Death: A missile that was launched by a reconnaissance warplane.
The Story of Death:
The family of Muhammad Hamdan Abu Rock tried to escape the white Phosphorus shells which the occupation forces used to shower the city. However, the family could not escape the shells; its child `Abdullah fell as a martyr.
`Abdullah was trying to escape with his friends when the reconnaissance warplanes targeted him with a missile causing one of his legs to be cut off from his body. A second missile hit him directly and tore up his bowel, lungs, and liver. He was transferred from Gaza to Egypt.
`Abdullah stayed in one of Isma`iliyyah hospitals until he was died fourteen days after his injury.
Other Information:
In his last moments, his mother was with him in the hospital. She went to him carrying warm greetings from his father who was receiving treatment in the West Bank. He was happy and asked her to give him some water, but she could not because of the medical debarment. So, she wetted her fingers and passed them over his lips, perhaps he would feel full. `Abdullah was died thirsty!
`Abdullah's friends still remember him. They remember the whispers, laughs, and the brave situations of `Abdullah. They confirmed to his mother that they still on the promise which they made to her that they will never forget him. In turn, she confirms that he is still alive by his soul, hearing them…
His Dreams:
His mother said: "His only hope was to finish college and get a job to meet the needs of an honorable life for us. He always wished that the economic conditions would be better so that he could provide medication for his sick father who was a blood-pressure patient and diabetic. He wanted to secure an honorable life for his disabled sister who suffered cerebral palsy and hemiplegia, and wished to build a new house instead of the old one."
