At 3 PM this afternoon, Israeli police forces raided the Alabasya neighborhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem to arrest 7 years-old Ali Siyam from inside his parents’ house. Despite his young age, which is significantly younger than the age of legal responsibity, the boy was taken for questioning at the Russian Compound police station.
When Siyam’s father and aunt tried to protect the boy from the cops, they were violantly assaulted to a degree that required their evacuation to the Hospital. Siyam’s father, Hammouda, was beaten and maced with pepper-spray inside the house and his aunt, Amal, was struck with a rubber-coated bullet in her thigh. The two are currently at the Hadassa Har Hatzofim hospital.
On arrival to the police station, Siyam was taken in for questioning. The boy’s lawyer, Adv. Lea Tzemel, who was already present at the place was denied entry to the station and access to her client. When she proceeded to try and walk through the gate regardless, she was herself detained.

Family self-demolishes home in Al-Rasasi district
A Palestinian family has been forced to demolish their own home in Al-Rasasi district of East Jerusalem, between the Old City and Mount of Olives. The house’s owner, Mahmoud Aramin, decided to destroyed it himself in order to avoid a Municipality demolition, which would have incurred a large fine to cover the cost of demolition and possibly put Aramin at risk of a 6-month prison sentence.
The home of three rooms covered 80 square metres and housed five family members. It was deemed illegal under Israeli law that cast the area a “green zone”. It is one of 40 houses in the region threatened with demolition. Aramin’s mother wept as she reflected on the harsh situation, having developed high blood pressure and diabetes – possibly due to stress – throughout the battle to keep their home.
“Where are we to go?” she said. “The authorities say we are not the owners of our home and refuse to give us the necessary license to stay. We’ve lived through the British Mandate and Jordanian rule in wooden houses, which were demolished too. My brother, whose life they took, was buried here. Finally we have built a home to call our own, and how we must destroy it ourselves.” Aramin told Silwanic that the demolition took place on the eve of the Municipality’s deadline to destroy the house.
“We are to attend a hearing to present the Municipality with photographic evidence of the demolition” he said. The family has been plagued by licensing issues since it was built in 1999, and has already been fined 50,000 NIS for its alleged illegality. “I managed to have several demolition postponed already since it was built,” said Aramin. “But in the end the Municipality declared the area of the house a green zone, with no authorisation to build on it.”

What is Jerusalem Day to the Palestinians?
Jerusalem Day is a national celebration for the state of Israel, honored in particular by the country’s far right for whom it marks the “reunification” of Jerusalem. To Palestinians, the day marks the occupation of the entire eastern half of the city in 1967, reflected in present day by the demonstrations staged on the date by Israeli extremists, who flock to East Jerusalem in their thousands.
The day is one of danger for Palestinian residents. In the past many have been physically attacked and had property damaged or destroyed by right-wing marchers, who enjoy the support and protection of Israeli state security forces. The marches immobilise the entire eastern city as the streets are overtaken by marchers chanting racist slogans and given free reign to cause havoc in the Palestinian neighborhoods. Many are seen to engage in binge-drinking during the marches, upping the aggression they inflict on residents.
On Jerusalem Day in Silwan, Israeli forces seal off village’s the entrances and prevent Palestinian residents from entering or exiting, while settlers enjoy freedom of movement. Many Palestinians are openly harassed before police eyes, but are often targeted for arrest themselves should they respond to the harassment.
Jerusalem Day represents a day of fabricated history to Palestinians: a day on which the myth of a “unified” exclusively Jewish Jerusalem was built. The day marks the desecration of mosques and churches; the expulsion of inhabitants and the establishment of settlements. To Palestinians, Jerusalem Day symbolises the inherent racism of the settlement mafia and the uncondition support of the Israeli state it enjoys.

Anxiety and fear are the lasting wounds of extremist attack on 11 year old boy
An 11-year old boy attacked by Israeli extremists on Jerusalem Day, 1 June suffers from severe anxiety following the assault, Silwanic has learnt. Ahmed Abu Maizar had completed an exam and was leaving school with friends minutes before he was accosted by a gang of right-wing extremists near Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Abu Maizar, who holds duel American citizenship and returned to Jerusalem two years ago, says he that was attacked immediately and without provocation. “A punch came at me out of nowhere as I walked along the street,” he told Silwanic. “My mouth was full of blood and I felt dizzy. I didn’t know what to do, so I went into a souvenir shop, and the shopkeeper took me to the police station.
The police washed my face and then notified my family of what had happened.” The police managed to track down the settler responsible, and brought him to the station. “He still had my blood on his hands,” said Abu Maizar.
He was then transferred to Sha’arei Tzedek Hospital, accompanied by his mother. “I was terrified of the anaesthetic injection,” said Abu Maizar. “But I needed it for them to put the stitches in my lip.” One of his teeth had also been dislodged.
The family lodged an official complaint to Qishla police station against the perpetrator of the attack, pointing to the assault as an example of the violence that characterises Jerusalem Day celebrations. A further investigation is pending, aided by the surveillance cameras present throughout the Old City that are likely to have caught the assault on tape.
Abu Maizar’s mother told Silwanic that her son has become very afraid of leaving the house alone since the attack.

The war on Silwan’s children
Targeting of Palestinian children by Israeli settlers and armed forces has increased in recent days. Undercover units in particular have been involved in the abduction of children from their homes and playgrounds, some of whom are then brought before Israeli courts and accused of crimes they didn’t commit.
False witnesses have testified in some cases, such as Ahmed Youssef Sarhan, 15, a high school student and vegetable vendor. Sarhan was kidnapped by Israeli forces and tried on false charges. He currently remains behind bars.
Over 25 Palestinians, most of them minors, have been arrested in Silwan in recent days. Detainees’ families have been denied entry to the interrogation of their children by police, despite the fact that both international and Israeli law rules this illegal.
Children as young as 6 years old have been arrested, intimidated and beaten by Israeli forces. Today many minors languish in Israeli prisons, while many others are sentenced to house arrest. Such sentences prevent children from attending school and fulfilling their basic right to education.

Ministry of Interior denies Jerusalem ID to newborn baby
Local mother Reham Nabil Abbassi is fighting for the right of new newborn baby Noor to gain her official Jerusalem residency. Noor was born on 17 November 2010, five months in to the father’s 10 year prison sentence. And while Noor was issued with a birth certificate in hospital, the Ministry of Interior has thus far refused to issue her with her Jerusalem ID number.
Reham, 21, waited the legal limit of 20 days for an ID card to be issued for her daughter. 4 months later she finally received word from the Ministry of Interior that only a son has the right to inherit Jerusalem residency from Noor’s father – as Reham herself holds Palestinian identification (a green ID card) as opposed to Noor’s father’s Jerusalem (blue) identification.
Said Reham: “Noor’s father is sentenced to 10 years, and he cannot commence legal proceedings on Noor’s behalf until his release. Mohammed Odeh, a Bir Ayyub man arrested by Israeli forces last week was ordered by the Israeli Magistrates Court today to be detained a further six months to await sentencing. The father of three was arrested by Israeli forces while returning from a shopping trip in Bir Ayyub district of Silwan. Odeh, 36, was accosted by an Israeli patrol jeep while carrying a bag of tomatoes home.
Odeh has been targeted by Israeli authorities in the past in an attempt to recruit him as a collaborator, but Odeh strenuously resisted. Concerned for his community, Odeh stated that “how can our children live a peaceful life in this climate of repression and violence? Dark days for Silwan’s youth
Israel’s continuous arrest campaign of Palestinian youth and children of Silwan has intensified in recent weeks, with no place or activity seemingly safe for minors from Israeli authorities. Arrests have occured as children return from school, drink coffee on the balcony of their family home or buy vegetables in the street. Many minor arrests in recent days have taken place during quiet periods in Silwan, entirely unprovoked.
The campaign highlights Israeli authorities’ willingness to defy basic standards of conduct and treatment, such as targeting and criminalisation of minors. Humiliation and physical assault are reportedly commonplace in interrogation and detention, even for minors.
7 children numbered amongst 8 arrested by Israeli forces in Silwan today. One child arrested, Yahya al-Rishaq, is not even 6 years of age. Despite al-Rishaq’s attempts to persuade soldiers not to take his young son, Israeli forces insisted on his arrest.
Three minors were abducted by undercover units, one aged 17 and the others 15. Bilal Osama Natshe (15), Maher Naim (17) and Ahmed Awad al-Bakri (15) were taken whilst outside their homes in Alabasya district, bereft of any involvement in clashes or confrontation.
Another minor, 15-year old Saleh Shweiki was summoned to interrogation when police called his father at their Bir Ayyub home. Shweiki was detained on arrival on charges of participation in neighborhood clashes.
Shaher Zaidani, meanwhile, was arrested while on his way to work from his home in Al-Bustan district. Zaidani was seized while waiting for the bus, imprisoned and reportedly beaten in custody by Israeli forces.
Mahmoud Mohammed Abu Khater, 14, and another unidentified child were abducted by undercover forces while sitting outside their homes in Athury neighborhood. Khater is due to appear before the Magistrates Court tomorrow morning on fabricated charges.
The targeting of minors has left Silwan families frightened for their children and ever-more cycnical of Israeli forces’ largely unfounded allegations against young members of their community.

Israeli authorities have clamped down on Palestinian movement in Jerusalem's Old City today in fear of Nafeer Friday, a day that's seeing vast crowds of Muslim worshippers amassing at Al-Aqsa mosque. Israeli authorities fear that demonstrations marking the event may be the catalyst of a new Palestinian uprising in the spirit of the Arab Awakening that has swept through neighbouring countries.

Residents are prevented from moving within the village by car, breeding an atmosphere of high tension that has already spilled over into violent continuous confrontation since this morning. http://silwanic.net/?p=15942

Violent clashes erupt between police and Palestinians at East Jerusalem funeral
Palestinians attend funeral of Milad Said Ayyash, 17, who died of wounds sustained in Friday protests near Silwan; police arrest Palestinians attempting to break into settler's house near the site of his shooting.
Two Palestinians were wounded Saturday as violent clashes erupted between Palestinians and Israeli security forces during the funeral procession of the teenager who was shot during protests in East Jerusalem on Friday.
Police arrested four Palestinians who attempted to break into a settler's house in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Yonatan, near where Milad Said Ayyash, 17, was shot on Friday.
The funeral procession left Ayyash's hometown of Ras al-Amud toward the cemetery near the Temple Mount. Expecting further demonstrations in response to his death, Israeli police have been deployed heavily throughout the city.
The Palestinians were reportedly wounded by rubber bullets fired by Israeli police.
Ayyash was hospitalized in critical condition in East Jerusalem Al-Mukassad hospital shortly after he was shot in the stomach on Friday. The doctors said he had no pulse when he arrived, and had already lost a great deal of blood.
He died of his wounds on Saturday morning.
A Palestinian activist told Haaretz that Ayyash was allegedly shot by a security guard near Beit Yonatan in East Jerusalem. Leftist actvists said the guard shot him after a Molotov cocktail was hurled in the direction of the neighborhood which has been the site of growing tension over the last few years.
Tensions are high in East Jerusalem as Palestinians prepare to mourn on Sunday the creation of Israel in 1948, which they call the "Nakba", or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were forced to leave their homes.
IDF soldiers and Palestinians clashed on Friday throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem, days before planned demonstrations to commemorate the Nakba on Sunday.
Mild clashes between the IDF and Palestinians erupted in Jerusalem, in Silwan, Isawiya and in the Old City. Israel police forces arrested 11 protesters.
An Israeli security official told Haaretz that Friday's clashes were part of the routine protests in the West Bank, and expressed satisfaction with the Palestinian security at the protests.

12-year old boy detained by Israeli police
A 12-year old Palestinian child from Silwan has been sentenced to house arrest by Israeli authorities. Court extends detention of injured youth from Silwan

Abu Sakran is accused by police of stone-throwing and participation in clashes that occured in the area Tuesday night. Although he denies these allegations, the presiding judge of the Magistrates Court favored evidence given by three police officers.
Abu Sakran's brother Hussein Abu Sakran denounces the allegations as false, pointing to the shoulder injury suffered by his brother and the circumstances of his arrest. Hussein stated that his brother and another detainee were transferred from the neighborhood to hospital when they were the victims of a hit-and-run, that also hit undercover police officers. Although Abu Sakran was suffering severe injury and discomfort, the judge refused his release on the basis of Israeli officers testimonies.
His brother added that Abu Sakran was taken directly from hospital to Maskubiya prison. We didn't know where my brother was then this morning I was summoned to Maskubiya for investigation.
Police confirmed the hit-and-run, stating that two officers had been hit while inspecting a car on the street. As the car left the scene, it hit Abu Sakran and another youth.

Silwan settlers against freedom of speech
The settler organization Elad recently filed a libel suit against several Solidarity activists, following the movement’s campaign in the village of Silwan during the recent Passover holiday. In the course of Passover, Solidarity offered the tourists visiting “City of David” settlement , a renowned archeological site run by Elad, information leaflets pointing to the grave political implications of Elad’s activity in specific, and of the Jewish settlement in Silwan in general. In addition, Solidarity joined the Wadi-Hilwan information center in conducting alternative guided tours inside the “City of David” site and through the village of Silwan,
Interestingly, the suit filed by Elad refrains from confronting any of the facts or arguments, posed by Solidarity during the Passover campaign, but rather focuses on one minor claim. According to Elad’s version, Solidarity activists allegedly argued that Elad is the employer of armed guards who were involved in several violent incidents against Palestinian residents of Silwan, whereas these guards are in fact employed by the Israeli Ministry of Housing.
The law suite is yet another in a line of attempts by ELAD to silence its political adversaries by manipulating legal proceedings. Solidarity believes that in this case, similar to what has happened in the past, this legal proceeding will further expose some of Elad’s operational methods in Silwan, as well as its intricate connections to Israel’s law and order authorities.

Israeli officer responsible for assault notorious in Silwan
The Israeli police officer responsible for the physical assault of Wadi Hilweh Popular Committee member Ahmed Qaraeen yesterday is well known in the Silwan community for his antagonism of Palestinian residents.
The officer in question is known for controlling traffic at the entrance to Wadi Hilweh outside the archaelogical settlement City of David, commonly stopping Palestinian vehicles for no reason other than to search or harass them. Israeli settlers driving in Silwan, however, go unchecked despite their common flouting of road rules. In one recent incident, the officer attempted to attack a Palestinian driver for refusing to give right of way to a settler driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street.
The officer is also notorious for his derogatory and offensive language used when addressing Palestinians. Several residents who have objected to his remarks have since been arrested on fabricated allegations lodged by the officer.

Community and religious coalition issues statement against land expropriation
Community and religious groups in Silwan have put out a public call for all Arab employees of the Israeli Parks Authority and Elad settlement organization to leave their jobs immediately. The coalition called for an end to Arab complicity and participation in the Judaization of East Jerusalem. Landowners in Silwan, particularly in the Wadi Rababa area, were encouraged to maintain their lands thus giving authorities no pretext to fine or seize their property.
The coalition’s declaration also iterated the importance of obeying the law, and that any illegal activity would be seen as breaking with Islamic or nationalist creed. The most dangerous thing facing Jerusalem, said the declaration, is the policy of Judaization and expropriation of Palestinian land. Such activity poses a significant threat to areas such as Silwan where the Parks Authority and Elad work together with police to expropriate Palestinian land through legal strategies.

Tell me who your are…
The close relationship between the Jerusalem police and the settlers is proved again at the ceremony for new Jerusalem District Commander. The newly appointed Jerusalem Police Commander Niso Shaham invited some old friends, among them settlers and extremists rabbis.
A local Haredic website published some interesting pictures http://fwd4.me/02QA from the event in which Shaham was seen exchanging hugs, and posing for photographs with the East Jerusalem settler leadership, among them Yonatan Yossef, the head of the Sheikh Jarrah settlers gang, David Be’eri from Elad, Matti Dan from Ateret Cohanim, and others (cozy photographs can be seen here).
Be’eri
Who was not invited? The citizens of Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah and other East Jerusalem neighborhoods that are suffering daily from the pressure and violence of settlers’ guards in their midst. Like his predecessor, who was pictured http://fwd4.me/02QB hand in hand with the settlers’ leader on the roof of a house that used to be Palestinian till the settlers came, the new commander seems to see the Palestinians in East Jerusalem as his target rather then those who deserve his services.
Instead of encouraging the Palestinian citizens of Jerusalem to trust the police and rely on them in times of need, ceremonies such as these keep them excluded, confirming their fear that the Jerusalem police is actually the Settlers Police.

Israeli police use new electrical stunning device on protesters
Israeli undercover units are employing a new, unknown electrical device in crowd-control missions in East Jerusalem, say witnesses. Residents of Anata refugee camp stated that undercover police were witnessed brandishing a formerly unseen small electrical device at protesters during clashes in recent days that, when applied, temporarily cripple the movement of those targeted.
The stunning device was not seen applied directly to the skin of targeted protesters, needing only to be activated from several metres away and generally pointed at the feet. The device was used as a means of crippling protesters to allow police to move in and arrest them with ease.
The unknown device was used frequently throughout clashes that erupted on the Nakba anniversary day.
