Palestine Statehood
(1:58) Palestine Statehood
Pressure is building for a diplomatic solution between Palestinians and Israelis.
In New York, the Palestinian foreign minister voiced confidence that his delegation would muster the minimum nine votes needed to win UN Security Council support for Palestinian statehood.
Security Council resolutions need nine votes from the 15-nation body to pass, but the United States has already said it will veto the measure, which would prevent its passage.
Israeli officials who oppose the bid had said the Palestinians would have difficulty securing the minimum number needed.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said: "We're working towards it and I think we'll manage it.
"We hope the United States will revise its position and be on the side of the majority of nations or countries who want to support the Palestinian right to have self determination and independence," Malki said.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas plans to give UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon an application on Friday for full UN membership for a Palestinian state, setting the stage for a showdown with Israel and the United States. [
Israel, which has called for renewed direct talks with the Palestinians, opposes the UN move and says it is aimed at de-legitimising Israel. The Palestinians say their UN bid is aimed at opening the door to renewed peace talks among two equals - both of them sovereign states.
The latest round of direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed a year ago after Israel refused to extend a moratorium on new settlements in areas the Palestinians want for a future state.

IDF issues urgent terror warning along Israel-Egypt border
Israeli defense officials believe Hamas planning terror attack on Israel in attempt to distract from Abbas' UN bid.
The Israel Defense Forces has significantly boosted its presence along Israel's border with Egypt due to urgent warnings that Hamas was planning on carrying out a terror attack in Israel, through the Sinai Peninsula.
The new warning comes on top of several other previous warnings that Islamic Jihad plans and other smaller Gaza factions plan on carrying out terror attacks on Israel's southern border.
Israeli defense officials believe the planned terror attack may be an attempt to distract public attention from the happenings at the United Nations General Assembly, which improved Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' public standing on the Palestinian street.
Meanwhile, the IDF has expressed satisfaction with the coordination with the Palestinian Authority, who prevented major clashes between security forces and Palestinian citizens who were protesting on Friday.
Earlier on Friday, a Palestinian man was killed during clashes with IDF forces in the West Bank city of Qusra. The IDF said they are investigating the incident.
Also, violence broke out in and around the East Jerusalem area on Friday when Palestinian youths hurled rocks at security forces in the neighborhood of Ras Al-Amud.
A group of Palestinians wearing masks threw rocks at Israeli police officers and border guards Friday in East Jerusalem. Police officers gave chase as the rock-throwers fled the scene, apprehending one of them and taking him in for questioning.

(1:47) RT reporter caught in chaos as clashes erupt on Israel-Palestine border
Jerusalem-Confrontations between Palestinians and the Israeli army broke out at the Qalandia checkpoint, northern occupied Jerusalem, this afternoon.
According to witnesses, the Israeli army attacked and showered youth trying to reach the checkpoint with tear-gas bombs. Several suffered from gas inhalation.
Confrontations are still going on injuries continue to be reported.
On the other hand, People in Ni’lin gathered near the wall for Friday’s prayer and they insisted on the importance of the national unity, especially in this time, as the President tries to get recognition and membership for a state of Palestine in the UN.
Dozens of locals and internationals marched with Palestinian flags, chanting slogans against the occupation and Obama’s latest speech at the UN, where he defended the Israeli occupation and ignored the last six decades of Palestinian suffering.
By the time those marching arrived to the wall’s gate, they were showered with tear-gas and sound bombs.
Ahed Khawaja, the coordinator of the popular committee against the wall and settlements, described Obama’s speech as racist. Khawaja said the speech was more Israeli than the Israelis themselves and asked for popular support for the Palestinians as during the bid to the UN. He asked for a clear strategy after September in which all political parties and factions participate based on activating the popular struggle to confront the occupation plans and the American administration that continuously attacks Palestinians.
