Hassan Atta Azaam: Details of the last hours:
When Hassan and his father died he was clinging to his father; so when their bodies came into pieces, the doctors hardly could separate them from each other. This was a well known story at Al-Najar Hospital in Gaza.
In the morning Hassan, 22 months, was very hungry, he awakened his mother to breastfeed him. The mother couldn't hold Hassan to feed him since she had not slept all the night because of the non-stop shelling. What interrupted her sleep was the worst nightmare she ever had in her life. She was losing her husband and kids.
Hassan's father noticed that his kid was hungry; he took him to the kitchen in order to prepare something for him to eat. The father started to boil the milk and cut bread for his son. When he went out of the house to bring water Hassan followed him hoping to get the food; all of a sudden a shell hit both of them. In a fraction of a minute they died.
Mother got up to the screams of her elder son Bakr to see Hassan's torn body. She remained in shock.
Other information:
Hassan was very young and all his attitudes were innocent. He loved his father and his grand mother so much. He did not get enough time to grow up and develop his hobbies and abilities in agriculture. His father had predicted his young son would be one day an agricultural engineer.

Nour Mu`een, Esaam Sameer Deeb: Details of the last hours:
The scene has started with the sound of a big explosion and many people hasted towards the house of the Deebs located in Jabalia Camp near Al-Fakhoura school. Along with the people steps, there were little steps of a 3-year-old girl who was called Nour. Despite her young age, Nour used to hear the sound of bombs and smell death, but that time was different. Breaking through the crowed, Nour came to the house where she stood shocked before the remains of her mother, grandmother, uncle Sameer and her cousin, who were killed by an Israeli missile.
Having the thirst for more causalities, Israeli forces had launched their second missile at the house of Al-Deebs. Nour was killed few minutes after her mother.
Nour, the youngest of the Deebs’ children, was considered “the butterfly of the family”, who was adored by everybody. She was the center of interest and focus of attention of everyone because of an accident that caused her a crack in the skull; so the family members have agreed to give her much care and never to annoy her. Nour’s father said “everything Nour asked for is to be done”. He added in a bitter voice, “It was all about Nour…she is the core of my heart”.
The bereaved father, who lost his whole family except his older son, remembered Nour's last days “Nour went to her uncle’s house to see his new baby, Alyaa. Nour wanted to be treated like a baby too. When Nour saw Alyaa breastfed by her mother, she asked her mother to drink the milk in the baby’s bottle and to hold her in her arms.”
Nour’s brother, Bakr, said “Mum loved Nour very much. Every two hours my mother took off Nour's clothes and washed her. As for my father he bought her so many pieces of clothes.”
Her Dreams:
Nour was eager to go to the kindergarten. Every time one of her brothers opened a book or wrote down something, Nour started to speak a lot about her dream of going to kindergarten and then to school. Consequently, her mother gave her a notebook and taught her how to correctly hold a pen and write.
our’s aunt, Reham, described Nour as “the fruit of the family”. Anybody who visited Al-Deebs liked to play with her and take some photos. Unfortunately, Nour passed away along with her mother and her five brothers. Reham added with grief, “they killed all of them…without doubt, they intentionally killed both women and children…”

Aseel Muin Shafiq Deeb: Details of the last hours:
The horrific accident that happened on 6 January at the last hours of the afternoon, in the court yard of Deibs' house in Jibalia, forced the young kids inside the house to run out. They were shocked when saw the torn bodies scattered every where. The mother, grandmother, uncle and his son were killed while they were seeking warmth in a cold night of the winter under the non-stop war shells.
Aseel and her brothers were terrified when they looked at their mother's torn body; her mother had just finished baking using carton and wood due to the circumstances of war and Gaza blockade. Aseel could do nothing after she saw her mother dead. She had no time even to cry; minutes after she herself fell martyr as Israeli troops fired a new targeted shell to their house yard to kill more. Aseel and all her brothers died at once. Only her elder brother Bakr survived because he was not at home at that time; he was on his way to return the oven to his aunt.
Other information:
Aseel was in the fourth grade; she was the most intelligent child in comparison with her brothers. She always got "Excellent" grade .
Aseel had a very special relationship with her sister Alaa, according to what her brother Bakr says: "I remembered every day when Alaa wake up at morning to comb Aseel's hair in a very special style and she used to help her with her study"
He added," we used to gather every Friday but now I am all alone! They all have gone… Even Aseel's friends Islam and Badria who used to pass every day to play with her they are no longer passing by. They were shocked for losing Aseel".
Her Dreams:
Aseel's parents were very proud of her and wished to see her a doctor. However Aseel dreamed of that too, every day she came back from the school she start acting like teacher. She always asked her brothers and her friends to sit around here to teach them.

MustafaDetails of the Last Hours:
Just before afternoon, January 6, 2009, Bakr Deib – 20 years old – asked his brother Mustafa – 13 years old - to fetch some carton from the street for his mother to bake some bread, amidst the hard times suffered in Gaza on the tenth day of the Israeli assault. Mustafa went to do what he was asked to, but unusually he was late. This was because he and his fellows went to see the house of Abu `Askar, which was bombarded the night before.
Then Mustafa went home carrying a small piece of carton and smiling he said to his mother and brother "I haven't found more pieces". When his mother finished baking, Mustafa went to the second floor of the house leaving his mother, grandmother, uncle and cousin in the front courtyard. Just a few seconds later the boy ran down to find their bodies torn and covered in blood. A few minutes later a second shell killed Mustafa and his brothers, who fell martyrs except for Bakr.
His father says: "Mustafa, my dear boy! I had great ambitions for him. I dreamt that he would travel to his uncles in Germany to complete his study and acquire a high scientific degree."
The father adds: "Mustafa was a very joyful boy; he was kind hearted with a high sense of humor. Everyone loved him and whenever we were invited to a wedding, Mustafa was specially invited in person to add a cheerful atmosphere to the party. Whenever we had some visitors, they looked for Mustafa to some joke with him."
Mustafa's fellows in the neighborhood always debated about who would accompany Mustafa wherever he went.
Since he was a student in third primary grade, Mustafa liked mimicking. His brother Bakr says that Mustafa was in the second year in El-Fakhura prep school with cousin `Esam who was martyred with him. He adds: "I loved Mustafa very much! He used to help me and whenever I needed something from the house he brought it to me at work. All the family loved Mustafa; he was the sweet of our house."
As for Mustafa's relation with his mother, his aunt says: "He was the most obedient to his mother. She said that he was always active and used to bring most of the house needs." Mustafa cared a lot for his appearance, as his aunt remarks, and he liked to look his best, especially that he was the smartest and most cheerful of his brothers.
Mustafa along with his cousin `Esam and his neighbor `Ahed Qidas fell martyrs, while the rest of their fellows (Mu'ayyad, Hussein and Ashraf) are lamenting their beloved friends.
His brother Bakr says: "When I go to sleep, I remember the past days with Mustafa. We used to play together and compete in writing games before we went to sleep. Now they are all dead and I am alone without any of my brothers…Sufficient unto us is Allah! Most Excellent is He Whom we trust!"

Esaam Sameer Deeb: Details of the last hours:
In the afternoon of 6 January, the twelve-year old Esaam heard the sound of a shell landed near his home. Trying to locate it, ‘Esaam found it in the front yard of their house. When Esaam rushed to the place of the missile, he did not know that it would be the most shocking moment of his life.
There Esaam stood before the remains of his father , grandfather, brother, and the wife of his uncle Mu‘een.
Silence fell over the place for seconds, but Israel did not give young ‘Esaam the chance even to see his beloved father, his brother, and his grandfather, or what remained of them. Another missile was shot at the same spot to hit ‘Esaam who dropped dead along with other family members including his five cousins, sons of his uncle Mu‘een, as Essam’s mother narrated.
At that time ‘Esaam did not care for the Israeli war machine and gathered his friends to play football. Driven by her deep fear for her precious grandson from the Israeli aircrafts, his grandmother forbade him from playing outside, but he insisted and begged her to allow him to play for just a while. Tired after his play, ‘Esaam sat to have some rest, but the Israeli missiles did not allow him to have any.
Young ‘Esaam loved his father dearly; he always accompanied him wherever he went, as his mother said. He took after his beloved father being funny and kind and he shared his father’s love for laughter and hatred of getting into troubles and disputes.
Essam’s aunt, Reham, remembered this “naughty” little boy, who had troubled her so much whenever she had a guest over in her house. Reham says “He would rush to play with young children, but he would quarrel with them and they would run towards me complaining, and ‘Esaam would say: “Aunt Reham, I love them and I am playing with them””. She adds “The great dispute was at the time of sleeping, the young children hurry to sleep with ‘Essam and Mustafa and would get confused about whose house they should spend their night”, but now ‘Esaam and Mustafa are gone forever.”

Muhammad Bassem Ahmad Shaqurah, 8'Abd al-Jalil Hassan 'Abd al-Jalil al-Halis, 8
Abd al-JalilMuhammad“I saw my son Abdulla on his feet, staggering. „Come here quickly. Are you ok? Come,"” Wael said to him. “„I"m fine father. Look at Bashar Naji. His head is cut off,"” Abdullah said. Since could talk, Wael though he was fine. However, when he approached him, he saw his head and face covered in blood. Wael carried him and started running.
At this point, “Abdulla started to scream „My abdomen. My abdomen." I took him down on the paved street and lifted his shirt. I saw a hole in his abdomen. I looked around to see if there was a car to take me to the hospital.
I saw the street had become a slaughterhouse. Everyone was on the ground, which was covered with blood and bodies. They were all on the ground; men, children and women,” recalls Wael. Wael left his son Abdulla on the ground and began searching for his other children Saif (8) and Jihad (14), who were also been playing in the street when the explosions took place.
Searching for his children, he found Lina Hasan (10): “I approached the dead bodies and turned them. There were more than a 100 people on the ground. Most of them were dead. I suddenly saw a little girl near Abu Dayer store. I think she was Lina Abed al-Monem Hasan (10). She was on the ground. I ran to her because I saw her moving her mouth. She was opening and closing her mouth.
She was holding candies in her hand. Though she was injured, she was sucking the candies between her lips. Her face was not injured. When I grabbed the back of her head, I was surprised to see that her skull was cut off. After that, she closed her lips and died.”
Wael could not find (8) and Jihad (14), so he returned to Abdullah. He took them to Kamal Odwan Hospital, where he found Jihad, who had also been injured. Saif was safe. Both Abdullah and Jihad recovered from their injuries.
The Israeli military alleged that Palestinian fighters had been firing mortars from the school and that the school was booby-trapped. A United Nations Board of Inquiry which was established to investigate incidents where deaths, injuries, and destruction of property occurred at UN facilities found that “there was no firing from within the school and no explosives within the school”.
The Board could not establish with certainty whether there had been any firing from the vicinity of the school, but all four witness statements collected by DCI-Palestine indicate that the area was quiet, and that adults and children were going about their daily business. According to data gathered by DCI-Palestine, the following 14 children were killed in the shelling in close proximity to al-Fakhoura school:
Nour Moe’in Shafiq Deeb (3)
Mohammad Ahmad Shaqoura (8)

Lena 'Abd al-Mun'im Nafez Hassan, 9
.Ahmad Shaher Fayq Khudair, 10
Ahmad of Beit Lahya, Gaza, died of wounds sustained Jan 3 in an IDF attack on Beit Lahya's al-Seyafa neighborhood.
LenaAt around 3:45pm, Israeli tanks shelled the perimeter of al-Fakhoura school, one of 37 schools operated by UNRWA in Jabalia refugee camp.
During Operation Cast Lead, the school was used to shelter displaced civilians who were trying to escape the fighting, or had been ordered to leave their areas of residence by the Israeli military, in northern Gaza. UNRWA had provided the Israeli army with the exact GPS coordinates of al-Fakhoura School.
The school was also included on a list of 91 provisional shelters that was communicated to the Israeli military before the start of the offensive. The Shells landed on the road just outside the school, killing 44 people, including 14 children.
On 6 January 2009, 12-year-old Hasan Hawila went out to the street after the afternoon prayer to play with the children from the al-Fakhoura neighbourhood, west of the Jabalia camp. Outside, he saw his cousin Ismail Hawila (16), and his friends Bilal Obaid (17), Bashar Naji (14) and Abdullah Abdullah (11), Mohammad Shaqoura (9) and Abdulla Baroud (11).
They were all playing marbles in the street. “I went straight to them to play marbles,” says Hasan. “The street was crowded with people because most of the residents of Beit Lahiya and Izbat Abed Rabbu had taken shelter in schools, including al-Fakhoura school.”
Suddenly, at around 3:45pm, there were three successive explosions. Hasan remembers: “The explosion rocked the whole area. I went down to the ground to protect myself from shrapnel scattering everywhere. I was about to stand up a few seconds later when a second explosion took place. There was a third explosion just one or two seconds after the second one.
I felt something hitting my left thigh. I felt myself flying in the air and thrown against the paved street.” When the dust and smoke faded, Hasan looked around. The scene was unbearable: “I kept looking around and saw many people on the ground. They all were bleeding. They were cut into pieces. I could not bear the scene. I was in extreme pain. I fainted.”
Minutes before the explosion, Ahmad Ma’rouf, who was sheltering in the al-Fakhoura school with his family, had given one Shekel [$0.25] to his son Ibrahim (14) go to the shop across the street. When he heard the explosions, he immediately rushed outside to look for his son:
“I saw more than 200 people on the ground. All of them were either dead or injured. I ran towards the shop opposite the school. I could not believe what I saw. People were on the ground near the school gate until as far as 200 metres away to the south. The ground was covered in blood.
I reached the shop and saw my son Ibrahim on the ground. I saw young men coming and quickly carrying him away. I ran after them to check on him and see whether he was dead or alive. They stopped an ambulance and drove him away. I kept running towards Kamal Odwan hospital, near the area [...] it was crowded with people. I went to the reception hall and saw dead and injured people on the floor. Beds were crammed with people. I saw my son Ibrahim on the floor. He was not moving. I realized he had died because of his injury.”
Wael Baroud (38) had just finished afternoon prayers with his neighbour when the shells struck. “The street at that time was crowded with people, children and young men from the neighbourhood and other neighbourhoods,” he says. As Wael was walking on the street, the place was targeted. His son, Abdullah (11), who was playing with his friends at the moment of the explosions, was injured:
Shahd Hussein Abou Sultan: Details of the last hours:
On the afternoon of Tuesday, the 6th of January, at a narrow alley, not wider than one meter, Shahd’s story ended.
On that cold day, eight-year-old Shahd walked around the streets looking for her father. He was sitting hidden with a friend, as the Israeli war on Gaza forced Palestinians to stay away from the streets.
Shahd sat in her father’s arms, searching for safety and peace.
Shahd was eating chips and sweets when an Israeli helicopter hovered above. As she played around where her father was sitting, a rocket from the helicopter shock the place. The father couldn’t protect his daughter, who died at once.
Shahd’s blood was flowing out, mixed with the father’s tears. The father was shocked watching his daughter’s blood on his own face and arms. The poor man suffered a horrible nervous breakdown, losing the ability to speak or move. Since that day, he is bedridden; not even able to mention his daughter’s name.
Her mother said “he is suffering from paralysis due to the terrible shock. He cannot imagine yet that Shahd was shot by an Israeli brutal bullet while she was between his arms feeding him and his friend from her sweets with her little soft hand.”
A couple of minutes before her death, Shahd was playing with her brothers and sisters, pretending to be an officer at the Rafah border crossing.
Shahd had a great sense of humor. She played all the time. Her mother and brothers still remember her in every corner. They remember her fun and friendly arguing with all of them. She had a strong personality, always trying to prove her point in an argument.
While Shahd was so young, her dreams were so big. She was whispering to her mother asking her when she will grow up to be like her elder sister, Soad.
While Shahd’s mother was talking about her memories with Shahd, Shahd’s sister, Shorouk, came back alone from school.
Shorouk was deeply depressed. “After two years of getting used to going to school with Shahd, who was in the second grade in the primary school, I am missing her now so much. I loved her a lot; every single detail in my day inside or outside home was shared by Shahd. Although she was younger than me, I always felt I can’t do anything without her.”
Shorouk loved her sister so much that she would see her in her dreams, flying with joyful wings, enjoying her life in paradise.
A similar dream was seen by her brother Mohammad, who also missed his sister so much
A better life after death is the only hope for those miserable children who have no hope to enjoy their lives; to live in peace like all kids around the world.
