Thaer Salah al-Hout, 12 Rafeeq "Mohammed Ali" Abdul Rahman Hammad
Thaer of Jibna refugee camp in Rafah, killed by Israeli heavy gunfire as he fled from raiding tanks.
Going to school after a night of an intense military invasion into your neighbourhood is unheard of - except somewhere like Rafah, on the southern part of the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. That's what Tha'er was doing the morning he was killed.
When Tha'er and his schoolmates discovered that their Rafah A prep school was closed after the heavy night of shelling on October 9, 2002, he and a friend turned back for home. On their way back there was another round of firing on the city by soldiers in their Israeli Merkava battle tank. Tha'er was shot in the right eye and killed instantly. "Tha'er's parents are devastated. I'm sure his sponsor is grieving too," said Dan Simmons, director of World Vision's work in Jerusalem. "No words can assuage their pain; nothing can justify his death."
It was the second time in five months that Tha'er had been hit by Israeli fire. In May, soldiers near a mosque in the Rafah refugee camp in Gaza opened fire near a group of Palestinian schoolboys. Tha'er, a sponsored child in World Vision's Al Amal Rehabilitation Society, was hit by shrapnel. Large pieces of glass embedded in his right eye, and he lost his sight. "I know the doctors aren't optimistic," said Tha'er. "But I believe in destiny. This was God's plan."
When Palestinian doctors couldn't help him, World Vision arranged for Tha'er to receive medical help in Egypt, which restored his vision. He once told us, "I want to be able to do things that kids my age do in other countries. I would like to feel safe instead of feeling pain and seeing destruction".

Shaden Abu Hijla, 60
Testimony of Sa'id Jamal 'Abd al-Karim Abu Hijla, age 36, single, lecturer at a-Najah University, resident of Nablus
The testimony was given to 'Ali Daragmeh, at the witness's home, on 12 October 2002
Shaden Abu Hijla, age 60, killed by IDF gunfire while at her yard, in Nablus, The West Bank, on 11 October, 2002
Yesterday [Friday, 11 October], around 5:30 P.M., my father, who is a sixty-five-year-old physician, and my mother, who was sixty years old, were sitting in the yard of our house, which is located on 15th Street in the Rafidiya neighborhood of Nablus. My mother was embroidering a traditional Palestinian dress and my father was sitting next to her, preparing za'atar [a spice]. They were talking about the curfew that the IDF had imposed that day. I was standing behind the glass door of the house, about one and a half meters from them.
Suddenly, my mother told me to stay inside. When I asked why, she said that two Israeli army jeeps were passing on the street in front of our house. I looked and saw two jeeps moving slowly along the road. A soldier who was sitting next to one of the drivers got out of the jeep and shot at us. He fired about twelve bullets. They all hit the house - most of them hit the glass door behind which I was standing. When I saw the soldier aim his weapon at our house, I moved away from the door a bit. Despite moving to the side, I was hit in the neck. I touched my neck and felt ,and then saw, the blood flowing from my wounds. At the same time, I saw my mother fall from her chair and my father bleeding from a head wound.
I began to scream and cry. I shouted in English to the soldiers, who were about twenty-five meters away, “Why are you shooting at us? You wounded all of us.” I went to check my mother and father. My mother's condition was worse than my father's. I hugged her as she looked up at me. She was crying and barely able to breathe. I told her to say, “There is no God but Allah,” and checked her wound. I saw that she had been hit by a bullet in the chest, by her heart. I hugged her and spoke to her, but she did not reply. She died in my arms.
I became hysterical and screamed at the soldiers. “Why did you kill my mother? What did she do to you?” The soldiers did not reply, and they left the area. When the neighbors saw that the soldiers had gone, they rushed over to our house.
I hadn't paid any attention to my wounds. The neighbors took my father to the government hospital in Nablus and me to Rafidiya Hospital. On my way to the hospital, I saw an Israeli army jeep. A soldier got out and aimed his weapon at the car I was in. The soldier looked serious, and I was sure that he was going to shoot and kill us. I asked the driver to stop. Then I got out with my hands up and told the soldier that I had been wounded and was on the way to the hospital. I also asked him in English, “Why did you [soldiers] fire at our house and kill my mother? Give me one reason. We are an educated family and cause no problems. Our neighborhood is not involved in actions against the army, and nobody harmed you in the street.” The soldier fired into the air and ordered me to leave the area. He said that he would shoot me if I didn't leave.
We continued to the hospital. The doctors saw that I had been wounded by the glass fragments when the door shattered. Half an hour later, I went home, where I saw my father. He, too, had returned home after being treated for light head wounds from fragments.
My mother's body is still at the government hospital in Nablus. We are waiting for my brothers to return from abroad tomorrow, before we bury her.
Testimony of Jamal 'Abd al-Karim Abu Hijla, age 65, married with four children, physician, resident of Nablus
The testimony was given to 'Ali Daragmeh, at the witness's home, on 14 October, 2002
Last Friday [11 October], around 5:30 P.M., I was sitting with my wife in the garden next to our house. My son Sa'id was standing behind the glass door at an entrance to the house. We were three steps away from where he was standing. Nobody was in the street and we didn't hear anything moving other than Israeli jeeps that had been driving along the streets all day long to enforce the curfew. We were about twenty meters from the front door of the house, where everyone passing on the street could clearly see us. We used to sit in the garden during curfew, which has been imposed for three months now. The Israeli jeeps would pass our house, and none of the soldiers ever mistreated us.
While we were sitting there, two army jeeps drove along the street and stopped about five meters after passing our house. One of the soldiers got out and fired at us while we were sitting in the garden, even though there weren't any confrontations going on in the area at the time. The jeeps simply stopped for a few seconds and they fired at us. It was a complete surprise to us. The soldiers were around thirty meters away. The lights were on in the garden and the house. After the soldiers left, we found fifteen bullets that had been fired. They all struck the house. According to the doctors at the hospital, one of the bullets hit my wife in the heart, killing her.
After the shooting, the soldiers left the area. Hearing the sound of the shots and my son's screams, the neighbors came to our house. They put my wife in a car and started driving to Rafidiya Hospital. On the way, an army jeep blocked their passage, so the neighbors took my wife to the government hospital in Nablus, which is about four hundred meters from our home. Neighbors took my son Sa'id to Rafidiya Hospital, but a jeep blocked the road. Ultimately, my son reached Rafidiya Hospital, were he was treated. He later learned that his mother had been taken to the government hospital in Nablus.
Because soldiers blocking the street, I went to the government hospital. One of the neighbors came with me. I was taken to intensive care because I had previously undergone open-heart surgery. While at the hospital, I saw my wife's body. I should note that my wife was a volunteer at organizations that assisted families during the curfew and closure, such as the Palestinian Red Cross, employees' groups, and European aid organizations.
