IAF bombs Gaza tunnels in response to mortar fire
No immediate report of casualties; two Israeli soldiers lightly hurt earlier in the day in mortar attack launched by Gaza militants.
The Israel Air Force bombed targets in the Gaza Strip late Tuesday after two soldiers were wounded in a mortar bomb attack by militants.
Palestinian witnesses said that the air strikes targeted smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip and an open area in the southern town of Khan Younis, used by militants to fire rockets at Israel.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. The Israel Defense Forces had no immediate comment.
Palestinian militants in Gaza fired two mortar bombs into Israel earlier on Tuesday, wounding two IDF soldiers. Shortly after the attack, six Israeli tanks crossed into Gaza and one fired a shell at a house near Khan Younis. No casualties were reported.
The mortar attack was launched a day after Israeli soldiers killed a militant who the army said was planting explosives along the Israel-Gaza border.
The Israeli military says more than 115 rockets and mortar shells have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory since the beginning of the year.
Israel launched a three-week war against Gaza's Hamas rulers in December 2008 with the declared aim of curtailing such attacks.
2 IDF soldiers hurt in Gaza mortar strike on Negev
Incident comes after IDF tank commander was lightly wounded in an exchange of fire with militants earlier this week.
Two Israel Defense Forces solders were lightly wounded on Tuesday after a mortar bomb launched by Gaza militants exploded in the Eshkol regional council in the western Negev.
While violent incidents along the Israel-Gaza border have become less frequent since a three-week war in the Gaza Strip ended in January 2009, this most recent mortar launch came in the wake of two clashes between IDF troops and Gaza militants in the last month.
On Monday, Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant on the border with the Gaza Strip after an exchange of fire in which an IDF tank commander was also lightly wounded.
Later on Monday, two Qassam rockets fired from Gaza struck open areas in the western Negev region, causing no casualties or damage.
According to the IDF, the dead Palestinian militant was Basem Da'ama, an Islamic Jihad field operative who had taken part in the exchange of fire in late March in which IDF soldiers Eliraz Peretz and Ilan Sviatkovsky were killed.
The exchange of fire began around 4 p.m. when soldiers from the IDF's Givati Brigade identified two Palestinian militants who were apparently planting an explosive device near the security fence in the southern Gaza Strip.
"The force opened fire at the suspects, one militant was killed," a military spokesman said.
Palestinian militants returned fire towards IDF troops and a tank commander was wounded lightly by shrapnel.
Militants said they had fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the IDF force during the exchange of fire.
Israeli troops invade southern Gaza; Palestinian fighters fire 5 shells across border
Israeli tank invading Gaza
Following a cross-border skirmish between Palestinian fighters and Israeli forces in which one Palestinian was killed on Monday, Israeli forces invaded southern Gaza twice in a 24-hour period.
During the first invasion on Monday night, Palestinian fighters with the Popular Resistance Committees fired five mortar shells toward the invading troops, and 5 additional shells across the border toward Israel, causing no injuries.
Israeli troops invaded the crowded city of Khan Younis a second time on Tuesday with at least 20 armored vehicles and tanks, and fired dozens of tank shells at residential buildings. Local witnesses said that one house in particular appeared to be the target, and it sustained heavy damage.
No injuries were reported, but the second invasion is ongoing at the time of this report.

The second strike reported was in Khan Younis, in an area east of the city in what locals said was an open area. No damages were reported.
In its statement, the Israeli military said the "attack is in response to the mortar shells that were fired at Israel, hitting the Eshkol Regional Council communities, during the past 24 hours, causing light injuries to two IDF soldiers."

Israeli occupation forces (IOF) used artillery to shell Palestinian houses
IOF artillery shells residential quarters
KHAN YOUNIS - Israeli occupation forces (IOF) used artillery to shell Palestinian houses east of Abasan to the east of Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, on Tuesday.
He added that the IOF pounding did not cause human casualties but only material damage as most shelled houses were deserted after being partially destroyed by the IOF in its last war on Gaza.
In the meantime, IOF troops aboard armored vehicles and under cover of army choppers advanced into Farahin area also east of Khan Younis on Tuesday, local sources reported, adding that the soldiers fired at citizens' homes and anything moving in their vicinity while tractors bulldozed cultivated lands.
An IOF spokesman on Tuesday said that two of his soldiers were lightly wounded on Tuesday when a mortar shell fired from Gaza slammed next to them.
A Palestinian resistance fighter was killed last night in an exchange of fire with an IOF unit that ventured into east of Khan Younis.
A Palestinian source said that the fighter was affiliated with the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad movement.
An IOF spokesman said that a military patrol detected two Palestinians while planting explosives near the border fence and fired at them.
In the West Bank, IOF soldiers detained eight Palestinians in their routine raids on West Bank towns and cities. Citizens complain that the soldiers do not pay any attention to the sanctity of the holy Islamic fasting month of Ramadan and storm Palestinian homes at dawn when Muslims start to observe fasting.
An IOF spokesman said that 17 Palestinians workers were arrested on Monday for heading to their jobs in 1948 occupied land without permits.
Labor sources pointed out that the IOF rounded up 200 workers since the start of Ramadan almost a week ago.

Skirmish at Qalandiya overnight
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and shots fired near the Israeli separation wall at the Qalandiya refugee camp shortly after 1a.m. on Friday morning.
Israeli news site Ynet said shortly after 11p.m. that Palestinians placed a tire and gas container near the wall in approximately the same location, and said the explosion caused damage to the wall.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said Palestinian teens hurled rocks at the Qalandiya checkpoint at 12:37, and Israeli border police at the military area responded to the incident with riot dispersal mechanisms, which usually include the launch of tear-gas canisters, percussion grenades and rubber-coated bullets.
Hours after the reported explosion, tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered at the checkpoint, the access terminal for Muslims in the northern West Bank for Jerusalem.
The spokeswoman said there were no extra security measures in place at the checkpoint, as Muslim worshipers wait to access Jerusalem on the second Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

The 22-year-old Gazan fisherman shot by Israel Navy
Israeli naval forces have shot and injured a local fisherman during a patrol of the Gaza Strip's coastline, Palestinian medical sources have said.
The 22-year-old victim came under attack on Saturday while sailing, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reported.
Muawiya Hassanein, the director of ambulance and emergency services in Gaza, said his colleagues had transferred the victim to the medical care facility.
Fishing remains a staple source of livelihood for the 1.5 million Gazans, who have been under an Israeli blockade since mid-June 2007.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Food Program (WFP) warned on Thursday that Tel Aviv had been tightening restrictions on fishing and farming by the locals for the past 10 years.
“This regime has had a devastating impact on the physical security and livelihoods of nearly 180,000 people."

Israel Knesset Member Declares “We Are Preparing For War”
In an interview by Likud Knesset Member Danny Danon, speaking with WND senior reporter Aaron Klein, who hosts an investigative program on New York’s WABC 770 AM Radio, the Israeli said that “Israel is preparing for a time of war…We are ready for all scenarios, and we are able to defend our civilian population. I cannot tell you how long we can wait more. But we prefer to wait and see if the international bodies are acting, or [whether] it will be only the burden of Israel, like it was in the early ’80s, when the great leader, Menachem Begin, [made] the great decision to bomb the nuclear reactor in Iraq.” He concluded: “We don’t want this to be a war of Jews against Muslims. It should be a war of Western civilization [against] Iran.” Good luck explaining that to 1.5 billion Muslims around the world.
From 77WABC Radio, specifically WND’s Jerusalem Bureau:
While Israel is hoping for a peaceful resolution to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the Jewish state is also preparing for “a time of war,” declared a Knesset member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party.
“We are prepared for all risks,” said Likud Knesset Member Danny Danon. “And I think our enemies should know that even though we are speaking of peace, we are getting ready for a time of war, as well.”
Danon, the deputy speaker of Israel’s parliament, was speaking in a radio interview with WND senior reporter Aaron Klein, who hosts an investigative program on New York’s WABC 770 AM Radio.
Danon hinted that Israel may take action if the world does not stop the Iranian nuclear threat, recalling Israel’s lone strike on Iraq’s nuclear reactor in 1981.
Stated Danon: “We are ready for all scenarios, and we are able to defend our civilian population. I cannot tell you how long we can wait more. But we prefer to wait and see if the international bodies are acting, or [whether] it will be only the burden of Israel, like it was in the early ’80s, when the great leader, Menachem Begin, [made] the great decision to bomb the nuclear reactor in Iraq.”
Despite his assertion that Jerusalem is preparing to act alone, Danon stressed that Iran is an international concern. He called on the Western world to “take action” against Iran’s suspected illicit nuclear program.
“I think we have to take action,” he said. “It’s about time to take action. It should be the international world and not only Israel. And I expect the administration in the White House to wake up as soon as possible.”
Danon said he is concerned the international community has not been forceful enough in its policies toward Iran.
“What we see today is that the Russians, the Americans, the Europeans all say they are worried about Iran becoming nuclear, but in fact Iran is working full ahead, and it’s only a matter of months or a year before they will be reaching the point of no return,” he said.
Danon stated that any future military confrontation against Iran “should be an international effort.”
“We don’t want this to be a war of Jews against Muslims. It should be a war of Western civilization [against] Iran,” he said.
“The threat of Iran becoming nuclear is a threat for the people who live in the U.S., Europe and Israel.” he said. “No one can guarantee that Iran will use its power only against Israel.”
And with that, we look forward to another stock meltup tomorrow.

Israel warns Palestinians about mobilizing international support against the occupation
The Israeli government has issued a statement warning Palestinians of the consequences of their efforts to extend a permanent appeal to the international community about Israel's occupation. Issued by the Foreign Ministry, the document warns against Palestinian efforts to draw the attention of various UN agencies to Israel's practices and human rights violations in the occupied territories and inside Israel itself.
According to the Ministry's statement, the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah is also preparing to submit an appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, asking for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails and detention camps to be declared "prisoners of war".
In a telling link to the current settlement "freeze", due to end next month, the document drew attention to the Palestinians' threat of what the Foreign Ministry calls "civil disobedience" in response to the expected resumption of settlement construction.
