Israel: Gaza Operations Expansions Reportedly Planned
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — An Egyptian official said Tuesday that Israel has agreed to briefly delay expanding its military operations in the Gaza Strip to give Egypt time to try to persuade Palestinian militant factions to halt rocket fire on southern Israel.
Israeli aircraft have targeted rocket squads in Gaza in recent days, but the Egyptian official says Israel has also planned a wider operation. The official says Egypt asked for 24 hours to try to bring all factions into an informal cease-fire and Israel agreed to give Cairo until around midnight Tuesday.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss Egyptian mediation.
The Israeli defense ministry had no immediate comment.
The military said there have been no Israeli airstrikes since around midnight Monday. Two rockets were fired from Gaza during that time.
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned from the podium of the Israeli parliament that Israel would operate "vigorously and resolutely" against those who would threaten its security.
"A security philosophy cannot rely on defense alone," Netanyahu said. "It must also include offensive capabilities, the very foundation of deterrence."
The recent flare in violence has been the worst in the area in months, killing at least 10 militants and an Israeli civilian.
The attacks have disrupted life in southern Israel, forcing schools to close. About 1 million Israelis live within range of rockets from Gaza.
The Islamic Jihad faction had led the rocket attacks that began last week, but on Sunday agreed to stop the violence if Israel also did. Rocket fire that drew retaliatory Israeli airstrikes persisted afterward, but it was claimed by a different militant group, the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Gaza's ruling Hamas group, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in past violence, has not directly been involved in the attacks. But Israel holds Hamas responsible for all violence from the territory.
Hamas, meanwhile, said Tuesday that the Israeli military had arrested one of its leaders in the West Bank, Hassan Youssef, overnight in his Ramallah home. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri called the move "a dangerous Israeli escalation against Hamas and against one of the symbols of the elected Palestinian legitimacy."
Youssef was released from an Israeli prison in August after serving six years.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
Hamas has controlled Gaza since taking it over in June 2007 during a civil war with its rival Fatah. The West Bank is governed by the Palestinian Authority, run by President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah, who unlike Hamas favors a negotiated settlement with Israel.

'Israel's killing policy reflects terrorism'
A political scientist says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement of “kill or be killed” is a typical example of Tel Aviv's terrorist mentality, Press TV reports.
“That is definitely terrorism and this is what terrorism is all about… They think they cannot exist without killing all the babies and all people,” Nada Hashwi said on Monday from Beirut during a telephone interview with Press TV.
Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel's defense policy was based on two principles: “Kill or be killed” and “he who harms you should bear the blood on his head.”
Hashwi says it is shocking that such outrageous Israeli announcements have not ruffled any feathers in the West; the EU and the UN have practically turned a blind eye towards Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people.
She adds, “Israel has been using killings as their only weapon. This is their self-defense.”
The Beirut-based political scientist said the extremist regime in Tel Aviv thinks it cannot survive without a policy of relentless killing of innocent people.
Israel has been committing crimes freely and this is the reason that now they “go in public and say we want to kill,”as if the Palestinians are not human beings anymore.
Hashwi stated, “I cannot believe they can get away with things like that.”
Israel is going down the hill and the killing policy cannot save it now, the activist noted.
In addition, she emphasized Israel should know that times have changed and now the resistance fighters will retaliate if Israel persists with its murderous policy.

Egypt: Israel agreed to delay expanding Gaza offensive
Egyptian official says his country asked for 24 hours to try to bring all factions into an informal cease-fire after a recent escalation between Gaza militants and IDF forces erupted last week.

"A security philosophy cannot rely on defense alone," Netanyahu said. "It must also include offensive capabilities, the very foundation of deterrence."
Netanyahu summoned his top leadership for a closed meeting to discuss Gaza on Tuesday afternoon.

Israeli Army Raid Jenin, Tanks Enter Gaza, 12 Arrested
On Wednesday, the Israeli army raided the northern West Bank city of Jenin and the nearby Jenin refugee camp for the second consecutive day.
Local sources reported heavy use of sound bombs when Israeli military vehicles entered the grounds of al-Shahid Khalil Sulaiman Hospital in Jenin as well as Haifa Street in Jenin camp. No arrests were made.
In the central Gaza Strip, armored Israeli bulldozers and tanks penetrated to the border lands to the east of Deir al-Balah. Local sources reporting to the Palestinian official news wire Wafa said there were four bulldozers, two tanks, and “heavy gunfire” in the direction of the Wadi al-Salqa neighborhood.
According to the Israeli Yediot Ahronot newspaper, 12 citizens were arrested from the West Bank on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing the total number of arrests made after the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange to 100.

Israel mulling military attack on Iran
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak are making efforts to muster a majority in the cabinet to launch a military attack on Iran.
Despite a previous opposition by Israel's hawkish Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman to a possible confrontation with Iran, Netanyahu and Barak have reportedly persuaded him to throw his weight behind the move.
However, an eight-member 'intercabinet' group, five of whom oppose an attack on Iran, has "little advantage" in face of other cabinet members that support the bid, Haaretz quoted a senior Israeli official as saying on Wednesday.
It seems that Israeli Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz, who has been appointed by Netanyahu, opposes a military strike against Iran at present.
Steinitz is currently supporting the four ministers, including Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya'alon, Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Intelligence and Atomic Energy Minister Dan Meridor and Minister-without-Portfolio Benny Begin, who remain firmly opposed to any action against Iran.
The four ministers, who still opposed to an anti-Iran attack, believe that Israel should proceed with efforts to courage the West to exert more economic and political pressure on Iran.
They emphasize that any action against Iran should be carried out in full coordination with the United States.
Despite media hype over a possible Israeli attack on Iran, a member of the forum of eight senior ministers has recently claimed that talks are still underway but no decision had been taken yet.
“This issue should be discussed by the cabinet and put to the vote. But this event has not been taking place yet.”
Senior ministers and diplomats claimed that a new report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), due to be released on November 8, will have a “decisive effect” on the decisions Israel makes.
Meanwhile, there are reports suggesting that Israeli pilots had received training on how to hit far away targets at a NATO base in Italy last week.
The United States and Israel have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the "option" of a military strike, based on the allegation that Iran's nuclear work may consist of a covert military agenda.
Iran argues that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities but has never found evidence indicating that the country's civilian nuclear program has diverted towards a military program.

A new war on Gaza authorized
Al Qassam website- Gaza- The Israeli government authorized the army to conduct an offensive against the Gaza Strip, including a ground invasion. The implementation of the offensive, according to the army, will be based on whether the resistance in Gaza resumes the firing of shells.
The Egyptian government has been actively involved in talks with the Hamas movement in Gaza and with Tel Aviv in an attempt to prevent a new war from taking place in Gaza, and managed to reach a ceasefire deal.
Israeli sources stated that no shells were fired into southern Israel Tuesday, and the army decided to postpone what it called “stepping up its retaliation”.
Israeli Ynet News reported that the Israeli offensive against Gaza will be based “on the severity of Palestinian attacks”.
The army has the green light to operate in Gaza and will not need to wait for another government decision, yet, it will not act unless fighters in Gaza fire shells into Israel, according to an Israeli military source.
Furthermore, the Egyptian Ambassador to the Palestinian Authority stated that Israeli officials assured him that Israel will not operate in Gaza while Egypt is trying to convince all armed groups in the coastal region to halt the firing of mortars and shells.
Twelve Palestinians were killed by Israeli missiles and shells fired by the army into the Gaza Strip since Saturday. Nine of them were fighters of the Al Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad. One Israeli was killed by Palestinian shells in Asqalan (Ashkelon).
Abu Obeida, the spokesman of the Ezzedeen Al Qassam Brigades (EQB) stated few days ago that Israeli occupation forces bear full responsiblity for any attacks and escalations against the Palestinian people in Gaza , adding that Palestinian resistance factions would respond to any Israeli offensives by all possible means and tools

Maariv: The Israeli gov't gave its OK for a land offensive against Gaza
NAZARETH, (PIC)-- Maariv newspaper said Tuesday that the Israeli government, according to an unnamed military source, gave its occupation forces the approval to launch a large-scale land offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Maariv added that the operation is aimed at targeting the Palestinians who fire rockets and their infrastructure.
It also said that the Israeli cabinet emphasized, in an urgent meeting, that the recent escalation against Gaza and the consequent fall of rockets at Israeli areas need a radical remedy to curb the Palestinian resistance attacks.
For his part, first deputy premier Silvan Shalom threatened in remarks Tuesday to target leaders of the Palestinian resistance factions and their sites.
Shalom claimed that Israel would put an end to the resistance rocket attacks on settlements near Gaza in order to restore its power of deterrence once again.
However, head of the cabinet's political and military affairs Amos Gilad refused to confirm or deny what was reported from high-level Israeli security officials that the Israeli government refrained from waging an extensive war on Gaza at Egypt's request.
Ignoring the fact that it is a tyrannical occupation entity, Israel always denies the Palestinians' right to defend themselves or launch counterattacks if they are massacred or attacked. It also threatens to wage an all-out war if the Palestinians acted in self-defense.

Israel test-fires ballistic missile
Israeli Jericho 3 missiles
The Israeli military has test-fired a ballistic missile from a military base in central Israel, according to a statement released by the regime's Defense Ministry.
The Israeli Radio cited the statement on Wednesday, adding that the launch was carried out from the Palmachim facility.
The official statement also claimed that the objective of the test was to test the missile's propulsion system, Reuters reported.
The Israeli regime reportedly possesses Jericho missiles, widely believed capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
Jericho missiles are also believed able to strike their targets with an accuracy of a few dozen meters (yards). The Israeli regime boasts that the capability would relief the Israeli military of the drawbacks of using its warplanes such as fueling, mounting ordnance and risking pilot lives.
Meanwhile, the Tel Aviv regime is also seeking to beef up its nuclear weapon capabilities, defying international calls to join global non-proliferation treaties.
The British American Security Information Council announced on Monday that Israel is "extending the Jericho-3 missile's range and developing an ICBM capability by expanding its nuclear-tipped cruise missiles-enabled submarine fleet," the UK-based Guardian newspaper reported.

Israeli Drone Targets Area in Northern Gaza
GAZA, November 3, 2011 (WAFA) – An Israeli drone Thursday launched missile fire targeting an area northwest of the town of Beit Lahia, in the northern Gaza strip, according to local sources.
Sources said an Israeli drone targeted a group of Gazans during confrontations in response to Israeli soldiers’ incursion into the area, which led to the destruction of a water well used for agricultural purposes.
The area was later heavily shelled by Israeli military tanks stationed at the border.
There were no reports of any injuries.

Egypt 'will not allow' new war on Gaza
EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma’an) -- Egyptian security officials have expressed concerns after recent violence in Gaza despite Cairo's efforts to secure a truce between Israel and Palestinian factions.
Security officials said Wednesday that Egypt "will not allow" a renewed Israeli operation against Gaza, in light of changes since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, seen as supportive of Israel.
The Egyptian people refuse to accept Israel's "wide scale aggression" and the military council and Egyptian security forces would not be able to prevent regular citizens from going toward the border, they said.
Separately, security officials have also said that two Palestinian rockets landed south of Rafah during the latest flare up in violence in which 12 members of Islamic Jihad's armed wing and an Israeli civilian died.

Israeli troops 'kill two in Gaza'
Thursday's clash interrupted a lull in recent cross-border violence
Israeli security forces have killed two people in a clash on the border of the Gaza Strip, local medics say.
Palestinian sources said Israeli troops had crossed over into northern Gaza.
The Israeli military said it had carried out a strike after a routine patrol came under attack. It said "hits" were confirmed, but said it had no information on casualties.
The incident came after a brief lull in the worst violence to affect the area for months.
Palestinian emergency services spokesman Adham Abu Selmiya told AFP news agency those killed were farmers who were working the land when they were targeted.
One person was injured, he said.
The Israeli military said its troops had been attacked on its side of the border.

Two Palestinians Killed In Northern Gaza
Palestinian medical sources reported, on Thursday afternoon, that two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting an area in Beit Lahia, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
Adham Abu Salmiyya, spokesperson of the Medical and Emergency Services in Gaza, reported that the two are farmers who were working in their lands when the army fired missiles at them.
They were identified as Mahmoud Abu Hilmiyya, 22, and Nasr Oleyyan, 23; their bodies were severely mutilated, and their remains were moved to Kamal Odwan Hospital in the city.
Furthermore, Palestinian fighters exchanged fire with an Israeli battalion invading an area in northern Gaza. The army fired three artillery shells towards the fighters.
Local sources reported that the soldiers were trying to invade Hamdouna area, north of Beit Hanoun, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
The sources added that the fighters destroyed an Israeli military jeep while soldiers of the Israeli Engineering Corps were scouting the area.
The Israeli Army claimed that Palestinian fighters opened fire at soldiers near the Gaza border, and that the army retaliated and killed the two fighters, Israeli daily, Haaretz, reported.
Haaretz added that the soldiers were conducting “routine work” near the Kibbutz of Zikim when the fighters opened fire at them causing damage to one military vehicle.
Furthermore, the army fired at least two missiles into an open area in northern Gaza, while the Israeli choppers and drones were flying over different parts of the coastal region.
The army said that Palestinian fighters fired at least 30 shells towards Israel last week killing one Israeli and wounding four others.
The death of the two Palestinians brings the number of Palestinians killed by the Israeli army since Sunday to 14; most of them are fighters of the Al Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad.

Israeli forces shell northern Gaza
GAZA (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces shelled an open area in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday, after killing two people amid clashes near the border, medics and witnesses said.
Witnesses told Ma'an that they heard three explosions north of Beit Lahiya after an Israeli artillery unit based on the northern border shelled an open area. No injuries were reported.
Earlier, Israeli forces killed two people in northern Gaza after clashes broke out between forces and unknown gunmen near the border with Israel, medics and witnesses said.
Artillery fired on fighters near Beit Hanoun after gunfire from militants towards the northern border, witnesses said. Israeli forces entered the Gaza Strip and were joined by the air force, they said.
Medical officials said Muhammad Abu Halmiya, 22, and Nasser al-Layyan, 23, were killed by an Israeli helicopter after the clashes broke out.
Al-Layyan was a member of the Al-Qassam Brigades, a representative from the Hamas armed wing told Ma'an. A Ma'an reporter said Abu Halmiya was believed to be a farmer.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said "fire was directed at soldiers near the border fence," damaging a military vehicle. Forces "returned fire to sources of the fire," she said.
An Israeli army statement added: "soldiers targeted the terrorist squad aided by IAF aircraft. A direct hit was confirmed."
The fighting came less an week after Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed 12 Palestinians, amid a volley of rocket fire into Israel which killed one Israeli, before an Egyptian-brokered truce on Sunday.

Islamic Jihad ready for all-out war with Israel
By Crispian Balmer and Nidal al-Mughrabi
GAZA CITY (Reuters) -- Islamic Jihad, which traded deadly fire with Israel at the weekend in Gaza, does not expect a subsequent truce to last long and has at least 8,000 fighters ready for war, a spokesman said.
Islamic Jihad is the second largest armed group in Gaza, after Hamas, which rules the tiny Mediterranean enclave. Both are classified as terrorist groups by most Western governments.
However, while Hamas has recently spent much of its energy on the business of government, Islamic Jihad has kept its focus firmly on the resistance, gaining in prominence and enjoying significant backing from Muslim supporters, including Iran.
"We are proud and honored to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran gives us support and help," Abu Ahmed, the spokesman for Islamic Jihad's armed wing, the al-Quds Brigades, said in a rare, long interview.
He denied widespread reports that Iran had provided his group with arms and smiled at suggestions it now receives more sophisticated weaponry from Tehran than Hamas. He also declined to comment on rumors that the brigades were trained by Iran.
"What I will say is that we have every right to turn to every source of power for help," said the burly, bearded Abu Ahmed, occasionally flicking a string of yellow prayer beads.
Islamic Jihad's latest confrontation with Israel left 12 Palestinian gunmen and one Israeli civilian dead. The fighting ended only after neighboring Egypt brokered a ceasefire with both parties, but Abu Ahmed did not see it lasting long.
"Theoretically the calm has been restored, but in practice it hasn't really," he said. Israel, he said, is itching for a fight in Gaza following last month's prisoner-swap accord, in which Israel released 477 prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held in Gaza since 2006.
Israel says it attacks only in self-defense.
Trading blows
It killed five senior Islamic Jihad militants on Saturday in retaliation for a rocket attack two days earlier that it blamed on the group. That rocket caused no casualties, but landed deep enough into Israel to set off sirens on Tel Aviv's outskirts.
Abu Ahmed denied responsibility for the missile, saying this was how Israel had managed to find five top fighters together in the open -- because they had not expected to be targeted.
But the al-Quds Brigades soon hit back, firing numerous rockets into southern Israel, piercing the country's defensive missile shield. One Israeli man died, at least four others were injured, while cars and a building were also set ablaze.
The group posted a video online showing a missile-launcher on the back of a truck firing a salvo of rockets. It was the first time the group has claimed to have such firepower, although there was no independent confirmation of its use.
"The al-Quds Brigades really surprised Israel, forcing them to rethink their assessment of us ... I don't think they realized we had that weaponry," said Abu Ahmed, indicating the vehicle was immediately hidden underground after the attack.
Al-Quds Brigades cells are dotted around Gaza and Abu Ahmed said there was huge demand from youngsters to join.
"We take some, but can't accept everyone ... It is a question of quality, not quantity," he said, giving for the first time an estimate of the strength of the force. "We have at least 8,000 fighters, who are fully equipped."
The group got a boost to its standing in August when the new rulers in Egypt started dealing with it directly over truces, rather than through Hamas. Abu Ahmed said Hamas was not involved in the latest fighting and that all the talking was with Egypt.
He played down reports of tensions with Hamas, which since Israel's military offensive in Gaza in late 2008 has appeared reluctant to go head-to-head with Israel.
"Certainly in terms of ideology, there is no difference between Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. The difference is in the methodology," Abu Ahmed said, adding that Hamas's governmental role meant that it was "more vulnerable to outside pressure".
He said Islamic Jihad's biggest problem was the Israeli armed drones that regularly buzz over Gaza seeking out militants. "Warfare has changed. You can't just hide a gun in your jacket like you could in the 1980s," he said, adding that the Jihadist fighters were not afraid of sudden death.
"It is a good feeling to be under drone attack. When we chose the path of resistance, we opted either for martyrdom or victory. Martyrdom is the more desirable."

Armed Palestinians on Thursday opened fire on IDF forces that were working on the security fence near Kibbutz Zikim, north of the Gaza Strip.
The force was positioned near the fence when suddenly shots and mortar shells were fired at them from the Gaza Strip. The force responded with fire and hit the terrorist cell. No injuries reported among the IDF forces, but a military vehicle sustained light damage.
Additional IDF forces were called up to the scene.
Palestinian sourced in the Gaza Strip confirmed that an exchange of fire was taking place between IDF forces and Palestinians near the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahiya.
The sources claimed that the fire erupted after IDF soldiers entered the Strip, and that the force was using artillery fire.
The incident came after two days of relative calm in the south, following a violent weekend in which dozens of rockets were fired at Israeli towns.

Medics: 1 dead after Israel strikes Gaza
An explosion from an Israeli airstrike is seen in Rafah, southern Gaza
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces fired on the southern Gaza Strip late Saturday, killing one Palestinian man and injuring three others, medical and security officials said.
The shelling attack near Khan Younis in southern Gaza killed a 26-year-old Palestinian man and seriously injured three others, medical official Adham Abu Salmiya said.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed the attack but offered no additional details.
Earlier, Israeli forces fired on a group of people east of Gaza City, moderately injuring one man. Muhammad Ibrahim Hamad, 23, was injured in the leg, a Ma'an reporter said.
Witnesses said they were surprised by the gunfire, which came as farmers were tending their land near Gaza City's juice factory, towards the Karni crossing into Israel.
An Israeli army spokesman said forces "recognized a group suspects coming near the security fence," before firing in the air to move the group away.
When one person "refused (to move back) they fired at his lower body mass," he said, adding that the area near Gaza's border is frequently used to launch attacks against Israelis.
Rights groups say workers tending land and collecting stones and other construction materials along Israel's buffer zone in north and eastern Gaza have been targeted by Israeli soldiers.
On Friday, Israel's army said a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck open territory in the Hof Ashkelon regional council. There were no reports of injury or damage.

Young man injured by Israeli machine guns East Shouja’ayah Neighborhood
Israeli military soldiers set fire Saturday morning at Palestinian civilians near “Nahal Oz” zone, east of the Gaza Strip led to the injuring of a Palestinian young man, the Maan News Agency reported on Saturday morning.
Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli forces randomly set fire at Palestinian citizens and farmers near “Nahal Oz” zone leading to the injuring of a Palestinian citizen.
The wounded was identified as Mohammed Ibrahim Hamad, 23 years old; his injury was described as moderate.
“Surprisingly, the fire was opened at citizens and farmers east of the Gaza Strip which led them to evacuate their farms at fears of targeting them,” the eyewitnesses confirmed
Late Friday, Israeli security sources said that a Palestinian home-made projectile was launched into the beach of city of Asqalan.
“The rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip. No damages or injuries were reported,” said the sources.
